Arsenal 1 – 0 Swansea: Match Thoughts And Individual Analysis

Three points more than welcome but a great deal of work remains to be done.

Arsene picked the expected line-up, handing debuts to Mertesacker and Arteta. It was a strong looking side and almost everyone expected a win for the Gunners.

The Spaniard had an early chance to make his mark as he won a free-kick just outside the box in a central area. I read somewhere (probably on twitter via Orbinho) that Arteta hit the wall with 13 out of his 15 free-kicks last year. With that in mind it, a similar result wasn’t surprising but one would hope for better in the future.

A couple of minutes later, at the other end, a cross from a seemingly harmless position saw Danny Graham get the better of Mertesacker but Szczesny did well to keep the ball out. It would turn out to be the visitors’ best chance of the first half.

The corresponding moment for Arsenal came in the 15th minute. Frimpong passed it to Arshavin around the centre circle. The Russian beat two players with a neat turn and played it through for Walcott. Theo got in behind the defence but wasn’t able to finish with his weaker foot. First the Keeper got a touch and it slowed the ball down enough for a defender to make a goal-line clearance. Van Persie was free to Walcott’s left and on such occasions one learns to appreciate the need for an extra pass!

The rest of the first half was mostly played in the Swansea half but Arsenal weren’t able to create anything more than half-chances. Shots from outside the box either went wide or were blocked. Vorm wasn’t that busy in goal.

Out of nowhere, Arshavin scored what turned out to be the winner. Walcott’s shot was blocked and the Keeper gathered the ball to the right of his goal. Vorm then tried to roll it into the path of his central defender who wasn’t looking. The ball hit the back of his leg and fell kindly for the Russian who finished from a difficult angle with his weaker foot. I liked the way he enjoyed the goal but didn’t really celebrate it. Some might say this is the reason smaller teams punt it long from the back. It was harsh on Swansea but one got a feeling Arsenal would eventually have scored.

In a way it might have been a blessing in disguise for the visitors. They came out fired up in the second half and pushed Arsenal back. The now familiar hesitancy returned among Gunner ranks as the complexion of the game changed. The second half had more end-to-end action.

Within 10 minutes or so the woodwork on both sides had been rattled and other half-chances created and missed. Swansea were growing in confidence whereas Arsenal were looking nervous. The number of aimless hoofs from the back increased as the midfield failed to provide the options for passing the ball short under pressure. The visitors were able to force mistakes through their pressing but just didn’t have enough quality or cohesion in the final third. To their credit, Szczesny and the central defenders dealt with most of the threatening moments with assurance. As we have seen for a while, the Gunners were struggling in the wide areas and were trying to make up for it by crowding the space in front of goal. In this game it worked.

I thought Wenger made good substitutions. Bringing Benayoun on for Arshavin provided another ball-playing midfield player and Arsenal were able to control the game/ball in patches.

Chamakh for Van Persie was another good change. The Moroccan offered more energy as he replaced tired legs. He also offered an aerial presence. On a number of occasions he was able to win the long clearances that were thus far finding opponent heads. In the 83rd minute Chamakh almost broke his home scoring drought when a Gibbs cross found him around the penalty spot. His header was good but a tad closer to the Keeper than one would have liked.

But the best substitution in my opinion was the introduction of one youngster for another. In the 75th minute Arsene sent Coquelin on for Frimpong who was looking a bit ragged as the game went on. I thought the French lad showed excellent composure and got in very good positions. Some of you might find this hard to digest but I have a feeling Coquelin will outshine Frimpong this season.

Both teams had excellent chances of scoring in stoppage time but failed to convert. Szczesny flapped at a corner and the loose ball fell invitingly in front of a visiting player who could only hook it over from a few yards with the goal gaping. At the other end Arsenal had a 4-v-1 opportunity but Ramsey played a tired left-footed pass that didn’t have enough distance to beat the lone defender. Gibbs too had a good chance but hit it straight at the Keeper.

All-in-all this was a good, open game with both sided showing the right spirit. That said, neither set of supporters will be really pleased with the performance of their side and will expect to see serious improvements.

I thought Arsenal had three midfielders who are all kind of new to the team for various reasons. Frimpong is a rookie, Ramsey is still rediscovering his form after his horrific injury, and Arteta was playing his first game for the Gunners. Considering that it wasn’t hard to see the lack of understanding that slowed the play down occasionally or led to missed passing opportunities.

Individual Performances:

Szczesny: A couple of good saves, collected some aerial balls really well, could have ended with a black mark when he completely lost the flight of the corner in stoppage time. Should not be rushing into crowded areas like that.

Sagna: Had a solid first half but struggled a bit in the second. Was caught out for pace on more than one occasion on the right edge of the box, recovered well but conceded some corners. Crossing was poor barring one effort that could have led to a goal if Van Persie had gambled on it coming through.

Mertesacker: Very assured in his tackling, read the game well, good positioning. Wasn’t as much of a monster in the air as one might expect.

Koscielny: Conceded one really dangerous free-kick but apart from that there wasn’t much wrong in his performance. Was fairly comfortable in the first half and alert in the second.

Gibbs: Good energy and pace on the left. Got into useful attacking positions. Put in a couple of good crosses. Can’t recall any major errors.

I thought the back five did well enough but the quality of the opposition meant that it wasn’t that stern a test.

Frimpong: He wins hearts and plaudits with an all-action style. Looks powerful and dominating in the middle but has some technical weaknesses. His touch and passing let him down on more than one occasion and it also led  to a loss of possession in central areas. Has the energy to chase and harass the opponents which partially makes up for his weakness.

Ramsey: Wasn’t that effective in the attacking areas but helped create some half-chances. Work rate was good and dropped deep when the team lost possession.

Arteta: Looked classy and played some delightful passes. Another player who did his bit in defence. I’d like to see him take charge from deeper positions when the opponents are pressing as high up the pitch as they did in the second half. Nevertheless, it was an encouraging debut.

I thought Arsenal lacked midfield runs into the box. When the runs were made there was a lack of understanding with the man on the ball. These things will come with time. The midfield should make a conscious effort to control the tempo when the opponents are pressurising the defenders.

Walcott: Almost scored, missed some opportunities to lay it on a plate for Van Persie, was fouled a lot but didn’t get the call from the ref. His crossing was poor but I put it down to a lack of cohesion in the side. There were rarely enough bodies in the box.

RvP: Excellent movement and work rate, hit the post, got into great positions, must be annoyed with Walcott but pleased with Arteta.

Arshavin: Was looking lively in the first half and the only real source of creativity on the pitch. Took his chance well. Still doesn’t look that confident. His style demands better and faster passes from the midfield.

The attack was not as sharp as Gooners would like. Part of it was down to the fact that the midfield trio was relatively new and the rest was down to the weaknesses in the individual play of Walcott and Arshavin.

Subs: Coquelin impressed with his positioning and technique, Chamakh with the controlled headers, and Benayoun with his touch and movement although I did feel he went to sleep occasionally.

Wenger: I thought the starting line-up was as good as it could have been. There seems to have been some effort put in regaining composure when the opponents attack in numbers. It needs more work, not only in terms of sustaining possession but also in transitioning to attack. A balance between rushing the ball forward to a lone attacker and over elaborating in the middle needs to be found. Defensive organization remains a question mark and better teams will create a lot more trouble. Substitutions were useful and appropriate.

  1. Agree with ur views on Coquelin…against manu we collapsed after Coquelin went off..

A bit of hard work this afternoon but surely just what we need, players who are willing to roll the sleeves up and put in the sweat.

Understandably there was some hesitency in being too adventurous (particularly second half) and some of the fluency was lacking due to new players but I thought we did well and there was a better assurance about the play particularly defensively.

1)Arteta – he isn’t Fabregas so we should appreciate him for the defensive grit he can bring in where he may lack in creativity vis-a-vis the Catalan. On balance, it’s what we need and it gives us better propportion I feel in midfield.

    2) Arsharvin – I have to wonder if he is more effective being played centrally behind RVP where his passing is particularly incisive and potentially damaging. The trade off (against a Ramsey) would be work rate but I do not think he helps out left in particular which leaves Gibbs exposed (not for want of trying). Probably the better player out left is Gervinho but Arsharvin through the middle is worth a considertation.

3)Meteresecker – OK. Looks calm and collected. Has to get use to the pace of it so all in all, reasonable positioning and good collected thinking. BUT I have to say our keeper is in TOP form (Last minute flap apart). This bodes well for the coming game where the defense will be tested and we will need Szsc to be more than competitive.

    4) Coquelin- I think he has potential but Frimpong offers more threat going forward. I didn’t think Frimpong was looking ragged at all. IN fact, I’m one of those who is a little miffed by the substitution. It’s almost a like for like when we should be top loading and adding pressure on the Swans (as they were cramping up). I would have personally put on Park (or AOC, didn’t see him on the bench) for the last 10 minutes. At very least, start pressing the Swans higher up the pitch.(give them something to think about when coming forward)

    5) Benayoun- not at all sharp but good movement.Agree that there was not sufficient off ball running in particular from the mids into the final third (where we miss a Jack or for that matter Diaby). Benny did add a bit more movement where otherwise we were static second half and not providing our man on the ball with sufficient ooption forward.

    6) Chamakh – Great to see him get into that central position and have the opportunity to leverage on his strength, attack the ball with the head. Good cross (correction excellent) by GIbbs (Pity Sagna only does knee height). Hopefully we can adjust Chamakh to play closer in and around the box when deployed and see a revival in his form. Ditto Arsharvin whom I thought had an enjoyable game and was rediscovering his ‘mojo’ (first half at least)

Don’t know why the media paints us as lucky when United get bailed out by penalties all the time.

Good gritty workmanlike win IMO with a couple of scares. But just the sort of performance we need to put out when not at our best (confidence-wise and fluency) and the sort of turn out that comes with the dividend of added experience in the team.

4 games in. Don’t believe the pundits. We have every chance of the title if we can get it right.

  3. santori says:

Gervinho, Song, AOC, Miyaichi, PArk, Santos. A lot of potential firepower coming back in the next couple of games.

OTOH, noticed the current media darlings most likely to pip us for 4th just tripped up to Stoke.

Key is for Metersecker and Kocielny to develop a solid understanding.

This team looks more workmanlike and potentially more direct in approach. Yes we have lost some exceptional creative vision (Fabregas) but hopefully we have also lost some over fussy movement.

Not sure what our final shot tally was but it seemed that we were at very least attempting to put more on target as oppose to waiting forever to pull the trigger. Could be wrong.

  4. Jk says:

Gibbs made a few errors in defence, but apart from that he was solid. I have to say I’m impressed with team even if it wasn’t one of our better games. A bunch of internationals and getting to know each other with in a space of time is rather impressive. From past seasons I can always remember arsenal either drawing or losing after players return from international duties. As for Ramsey, I would like to say that his confidence and skill that we all know him for will come back as the season goes on. I’ve been reading some articles on thoughts of the game and people are starting to say ramsey is the next denilson which I find unfair. Let’s hope we can grab a win in Dortmund this week. Up the Arsenal!!!

  5. Charlie says:

A team feeds off confidence. Not a good performance but hopefully later in the season when the team is flying we’ll look back at this game as a bit of fortune that got us back on track. Song, Wilshere, Vermaelen, Gervinho and Dos Santos would all step into the team if they were fit. Let’s not forget that we had 11 players out or unfit. Any team that isn’t paying their reserves 100k a week would struggle to put out a good team with 11 out so it’s encouraging that there is some depth in the squad.
Those players are Gervinho, Song, Park, Miyaichi, Wilshere, Jenkinson, Vermaelen, Dos Santos (benched but not match fit), Rosicky, Squillaci (thankful for this one) and Diaby.

  6. Aussie Jack says:

Must confess I`m waiting for the return of Gervinho and the introduction of Parks in the middle with RVP just behind him.
With all due respects I think I`ve had enough of Walcott for a while he seems to have adopted a Bendtner type attitude, questions referees too much, has lots of opinions and is in danger of becoming a self imposed PR machine. Like Bendtner he thinks he`s better than he realy is.
It would be nice to see Miyachi and Chamberlain have a run, maybe in the next home game against Bolton, meantime we`re off to sunny Blackburn, that should be fun.

    • winston says:

Completley agree about Walcott. Some one a couplee of sesons ago questioned his footballing brain and I cant see he has a great deal of it.He went for personal glory when he had the option to pass it across to Rvp which might well have rsulted in goals on a couple of occasions.Quite a lot of wrinkles to be ironed out before we get back to our smooth fluid style of play and comprahensive winning ways.Still a win is a win and the first three points in the bag
      Winston

    • ZGunner says:

I also do a agree to some extent with being tired of Walcott as he’s not the most likeable player or person.. he talks and acts big while he still hasn’t broken through as a player in my honest opinion.

Nonetheless, he has a football brain better than many people might feel. His positioning can be great and his runs too, but he has far from perfected his traits as a footballer.

He is not a winger and we will never get the best out of him playing on the sides. When he positions himself more centrally he presents such a threat that the defense and keepers get really worried. I would add he needs to a little missing something to his finish… He is deadly but inconsistent (junk like Bendtner.. DEADLY when consistent).

Has anyone noticed the switching up in positions by our three forwards? I’ve seen Arshavin/Walcott/RVP on both flanks, and centrally at different times. This was also noticeable during the away Udinese game. Arsene is trying something new.

Though I am not so pleased with Walcott I feel additional and consistent playing time will do him a lot of good. I hope Arsene will keep starting him to help his development, but guide him to a little more modesty and hard work.

  7. Charlie says:

The squad has real wingers this year and a brazilian full back. I don’t see Walcott gettin many chances on the wing once Miyaichi and Gervinho are back and the performances will be better as a result. He’s an option in the centre but he needs to be consistent if we’re gonna rely on him for goals at any time. If Arsene saw Walcott as a winger why has he gone out and bought 3 wingers and two attacking midfielders who can also play wide (Arteta and Benayoun (loan i know)) ? He’s only there because there are so many players out.

  8. Ndyetabura Hamisi says:

Arsenne should and must strengthern the team. Passes, Chances, were not as many as those created by Swansea

  9. Tim says:

A lot still needs to be done, certainly, but the result yesterday was the only thing that mattered. It’s unrealistic to expect the new signings to suddenly transform the team straight away, particularly given that this new squad has only had a couple of days together since the international break. Confidence and coherence will take time, particularly when you consider that of yesterday’s starting line-up only five had made 20 or more PL starts, Arteta and Mertesacker were debutants and Frimpong was making only his second start. The team will take a few weeks – at least the equivalent of a pre-season, say – to gel as a unit. Which only goes to underline the folly of leaving our key signings so late, but we are where we are now and if we win our next four games 1-0 I for one will not be complaining.

    • ZGunner says:

I should hope that Arsenal will get out of the nervy 1-0, 2-1 score-lines and break into it’s confidence… it’s 3 nils and it’s 4-1s… the occasional 6-0.

A big win (at home and away) will be needed to cement the team’s belief in moving forward stronger.

  10. DFO says:

The team looked ok, but it was a generally flat performance. I don’t remember Arsenal looking this boring in the last 5 years. Everything felt jilted as the ball moved up from def. to fwds. I’m praying it’s a lack of chemistry from the new squadmates joining but right now Ramsey seems to be element common to the uninspiring performances. Not that he’s the next Denilson, I just think he’s desperately trying to force his comeback instead of going with the flow of the game. How many long range kicks has he hoofed into defenders standing right in front of him? That’s a sure sign of rushing things.

Arteta looks eerily like Cesc the way he moves and turns with the ball. Really impressed.

Not crazy about Walcott’s new attitude problem, he’s not good enough to make me overlook it.

So excited for Gervinho’s return, Park’s contribution to the team and seeing if AOC will be given a chance to impress.

    • CaveGun says:

I think we have gotten so used to seeing Cesc play that we think there is no other form of playing. Lets give the guys a thumbs up for getting the win. At this point in time, thats only what matters. United won the league the last two seasons through grit and determination, not by playing pretty football. I dont disagree that it was a boring match by Arsenal standards but the key players responsible for that are gone. Like Arsh said, we need to develop a different pattern to our play but a win should be appreciated.

Arteta looks like Cesc probably because he started off at Barca.

Also on that team, I think we have been done in by Barca one time too many. Cesc apart, look at the career of Alex Hleb. Teased away by the same club and is an outcast just waiting for his contract to expire. Was his dream not to play wearing Barca colours? Shame great player too. But they unsettled him and made him leave, weakening us at the time and destroying the player. Sometimes I think Barca does this intentionally to weaken their opposition in Europe and bcos they really want the player. Just a thought, just a thought

      • ZGunner says:

Arteta: like a duck to water. He is Mikel and not Cesc; and he does certain things not as well as Fabregas, but other things he does better.. he plays much better deep, is great at intercepting the ball, and is not easy getting past when he’s defensive.

I have to confess, I was initially skeptic about signing this player, yet happy we signed a player for a position we are lacking in.. but having watched him play only 90 minutes of football I find it hard to believe this player developed outside of the Arsenal.

I’ve got a great feeling about Arteta …. he’s CLASS and Natural Born Gunner.

And just like Cesc was welcomed in his home … I say welcome to your home Mikel.

And may you always be Arteta and not try to be Cesc.
        He is a 4 …. but you … are an 8 :O)

  11. Frode says:

I’m not sure about the diagnosis, but before the game I thought the pace of Walcott would hurt them much more. He stayed too much out wide though. Arshavin was drifting inside most of the game, and played well by his standards. Van Persie was playing as a traditional nine in this game, which I am not so sure I liked. On the other hand it allowed Arshavin to be more creative in the middle. As pointed out Walcott was staying too much out wide, and the fact that Van Persie wasn’t playing his usual false nine role, was probably playing no small part in that.

Generally the intensity in our game was poor. We were not fluid enough, static, pressing poorly and playing with a low tempo. Wenger will have to work his magic on the training-ground in the coming week in order to get this team to gel. Our attack is looking really poor. What I did like though, was that we were taking more long-shots.

    • ZGunner says:

Arshavin’s has the same problem as Walcott; he gives better input playing centrally. Having said that I must say I admire Arshavin for NEVER having complained about playing out of position.

He’s even been played as a centre forward due to injuries, not necessarily impressed much of the time… but still… never complains.

And in retrospect his stats are always excellent. He gets the assists but not much credit by his fans. I feel the fans need to show Andre a little more faith. Class is permanent.

  12. Webbie says:

Short accurate passes all over the field are a pleasure to watch but where there are short passes, there are also defending bodies filling up the spaces and making it difficult to find anywhere to move without dribbling. Not many are good at this.

We need to expand our game over a larger area, creat space for midfield to use for slotting good passes.

  13. Yang says:

Good result none the less. Performance is no good but luckily Team no need excellent performance. Players will return from suspension and team start to gel up so better performance will come I think.

  14. irish gooner says:

    RVP was tripe

  15. critic says:

Ramsey made a great run while RVP chose to take a shot by himself and eventually hit the woodwork.

Both Theo and RVP give the impression of either working too hard/taking more responsibility or playing for a move next season.

    • loyal supporter says:

when they played passing in front of the goal post, u guys asked them to stop passing and shot and now when they’re shooting, u guys r complaining that they’re selfish!! wtf?? if RvP wants to move he could have done it 3 season ago when R.Madrid wanted him!! so stop talking rubbish!!

  16. critic says:

    change the blog’s picture forgodsake….

  17. Toye says:

I think the major problem we will have is the midfield if we continue to play Ramsey in creative positions. The guy plays like a typical Lampard-delaying play by not releasing balls on time and when he finally does,he plays out wide only for him to take up goal scoring positions.I have studied him for quite sometime and I can tell you that if he has two options to either to give a throughpass or pass to someone on the wings ,he will choose the latter. At this time Arsenal needs players who do not need to turn 360 degrees only to pass slighly backwards and thats why i think once we can play natural wingers Asharvin can make one touch through passes.
