All-round stupidity will be the only memorable part of this predictable, drab encounter.
Arsene went with the expected line-up and the Gunners played higher up the pitch than would have been advisable. Whenever the Gunners got the ball out wide, and there were at least four or five defenders against an attacker or two. The crosses didn’t lead to a single threatening opportunity.
Unfortunately, the players didn’t have the right understanding or work rate to get past Newcastle’s tight marking and create something down the middle either. Few half chances that did fall to the forwards were squandered by poor first touches.
At the other end, again as expected, the Barcodes just didn’t have any quality in the attacking third to seriously test Szczesny. Even when Arsenal were down to ten men, the hosts never really looked like scoring as the defenders attacked the hopeful balls put in the box with purpose and conviction.
I thought the back six performed admirably for the Gunners whereas the five in front of them ranged from average to pedestrian.
There weren’t too many moments worth talking so I will come straight to the two occasions where the ref might have made big mistakes.
First was an incident with Song stamping Joey Barton. I am not sure if it was deliberate or not but it seemed like Song knew what he was doing. This was probably in retaliation to the trademark Barton tackle in which he kicks the balls by going through the opponent’s calf with a heavy swing of his leg.
Could the ref have given a red card to Song? I thought the stamp was not a malicious one because it didn’t hurt the Newcastle midfielder who was up and running within seconds. It was more like a warning – “Don’t kick me from behind”. But we have seen red cards given for such reactions and technically it would be right. If not a red, it could easily have been the second yellow card for Arsenal’s best player on the night. I am worried there might be some retrospective action as the officials had missed the incident.
The second and undoubtedly a lot more significant moment came in the 76th minute.
Gervinho ran into the box and cut back inside. Tiote went for the tackle and might have grazed the winger’s foot. The way the Ivorian went to ground was overly theatrical and could easily have resulted in a booking. For a foreign player at Arsenal, a repeat of that in the future can be disastrous as he will be singled out and hung out to dry by the press. It will also have a direct impact on the number of valid penalties that are disallowed. Most importantly, he has the ability to stay on his feet and make a difference. So I’d say his focus has to be on doing the right thing.
It seemed Peter Walton was waving play on when Joey Barton went and grabbed Gervinho by his shirt to drag him up. A scuffle ensued as other players got involved. For a short moment, the Ivorian was surrounded by three Newcastle players but his teammates rushed in to support. In the melee, Gervinho somehow managed to tap Barton in the face and he went down as if on the receiving end of a boxer’s knock-out punch.
Gervinho, in a moment of madness, wasn’t able to control his reaction and technically deserved a red card. He will now miss three big games.
Peter Walton then went on to give a yellow to Barton. Inexplicable. Unjustifiable. Impotent stupidity of the highest order. It’s impossible to digest that a man with so much top flight refereeing experience can be so bereft of common sense. But there are quite a few of those around and if the Gunners give the ref a chance to screw them, they should be prepared for the worst. Don’t get me wrong, I am not saying the ref was anti-Arsenal. I just think referees in the English game make far too many moronic decisions when they go by the book over something trivial while being lenient towards a number of dangerous and serious offences.
I don’t want to pin the result on the referee though. Arsenal were going to struggle with these tactics and players and a Red for Song might have been a lot more disastrous for the Gunners.
The players also need to understand that getting dirty with a guy like Barton can never work in their favour. It’s like wrestling with a pig. Not worth it and can be, as it was in this case, detrimental to the cause. Gervinho, if he had to use theatrics, should have employed them when Barton got physical.
This might still work in Arsenal’s favour as the Ivorian will be able to focus on the Champions League qualifiers but Wenger will have a hard time in picking a strong team to face Liverpool and United.
Anyway, I’d rather put this game behind me. There really wasn’t much to remember or discuss.
Individual Performances
Szczesny: Good decision making, got enough purchase on his punches, collected everything that came his way, looked composed and alert.
Sagna: Worked hard up and down the right. Big contribution in retaining possession. Could have done better with his crosses but the targets were always outnumbered.
Koscielny: Close second in my MotM choice. Read the game well, made crucial clearances, was tight on his man and didn’t make any mistakes.
Vermaelen: Did fairly well but not as good as Koscielny. Missed a couple of headers and Newcastle got some half chances on his side of the box.
Gibbs: Got into good attacking positions and some of his crosses were in the right areas. Could have moved the ball faster on a couple of occasions, which might have led to better attacking chances. Should not drift inside as often as he did. Great pace and good positioning while defending.
On the whole, I thought the back five deserve a lot of credit for the way they defended. There were some iffy moments but that was more down to the fact that enough cover wasn’t always available. I was impressed by the number of first headers that Arsenal won in the box. More of that will be needed all through the season.
Song: Really the only one supporting the defence for most of the game. Did an excellent job sweeping in front of the back four and won most of his physical battles. Passing was quite impressive. Conceded a couple of fouls and could have been off but can’t blame his as he was doing a lot more than one man’s job.
Rosicky: Some neat turns and runs. A couple of deft passes in tight spaces. A lot more is needed. Work rate was not good enough and passing wasn’t incisive enough.
Ramsey: Quite ordinary. Off the ball movement wasn’t very good. Didn’t do well with the ball when put under pressure. Has the abilities but something is holding him back.
I thought the midfield wasn’t playing the rotating triangle anymore but Song was more of a dedicated sweeper, although he did move forward occasionally. The Cameroonian provided good cover in central areas and in the inside channels but wasn’t as much on the right as he is with Wilshere around. Rosicky and Ramsey have to offer a lot more with and without the ball.
Gervinho: Made some intelligent runs. Showed a quick turn of pace. Didn’t really have the final ball. He will struggle when the opposition has numbers in the box.
RvP: Missed some half chances. Poor movement and understanding with other attackers. Looked rusty. Put in a couple of good corners and a decent free-kick.
Arshavin: Played the two best balls of the game but not much more. The midfield just wasn’t able to find him in space. Messed up a glorious 2-v-1 opportunity when his pass was intercepted by the sole defender.
The attacking trio didn’t seem to be on the same page. They also didn’t have a very good understanding with the midfield. This was a bit predictable and disappointing.
Subs: Walcott looked off pace but produced the only real shot on target. Frimpong did his defensive bit. Djourou could have been a hero in the final two minutes but got a crucial pass wrong.
Wenger: The team is desperately short of quality with players like Cesc, Nasri and Wilshere unavailable. The manager has to be decisive. And he has to find some tactical tweaks to get the best out of the players at his disposal. Credit must be given for the work done on the defensive side but can it be sustained?

Gervinho has to learn fast or he will be the next Eduardo.
Rosicky and Ramsey should swap positions. The Welshman will do better from deep and Rosicky can make a difference in the final third.
But above and beyond everything else, we need two top class signings to replace Nasri and and Cesc before the next weekend. This has gone on for way too long.
Agree with Desi. Song was more fixed in position and I feel this is in part to the personnel available.
We can play the rotating triangle with Song, Cesc and Jack (maybe Nasri) but not beyond that.
Good call by Wenger to reinforce us towards the end with frimpong and Djourou.
I agree that we need one more quality signing in the middle.
I think MOntolivo is a good answer as he can playmake from deep affording us the ability to go 4-4-1-1. He can also play as a DM which is good (experienced) cover for Song.
As we have seen with the Red card, it could have easily been Song out for 3 matches. Song plays an invaluable role screening ur defense. I don’t think Frimpong (whilst promising) will be quite as capable nor would it be fair to be dependant on him so early on.
Something needs to be done here. Montolivo has a year left on contract and is refusing tor enew it with Fiorentina. If we want him, we can get him and probably for a reasonable price.
Just a word on Ramsey. From what I`ve read and what I`ve seen and despite all the positive hype on his return from injury I feel he has some way to go in regaining his confidence and rhythum.
One can`t help comparing him with Eduardo repairs but small things
go missing in the mind.
Well said.
Can a shrink help?
No offense but all those who’ve castigated Diaby, I think Ramsey is no different than the French man and actually less of a game changer.
On the plus though, at very least, the Welshman stayed on the pitch.
Let’s hope he gets a bit more aggressive with his play. One promising thing about Ramsey is he isn’t afraid to crack them from far.
should read…”the body repairs but small things go missing in the mind”
Off-topic but somewhat related, did you see the Liverpool game? All that money spent and nothing to show for it. That too at Anfield! What was that about holding on to a lead?
Agreed. Mediocre team. Let’s hope Arsenal can field a team that expose their weak defending and lack of pace.
Also, Arsenal could really use someone of Cattarmole’s class.
I was a fan of Cattermole but his Red Card collection put me off. At Arsenal he would pick up even more just because of the badge on his shirt.
I thought the midfield was poorly chosen by Wenger. He made similar mistakes in the past, most memorably againsy WBA at home. I was expecting Frimpong to come on at hour mark.
Rosicky and Ramsey with Song was a bad choice against Newcastle and more so when you have Arshavin on the pitch. Given our limitations due to injury we could have rotated out Ramsey for Frimpong and had a better balance. It seemed that Song was doing all the work and him getting tired began to show.
Wenger cannot seem to have things go for him at all.
Frimpong doesn’t have the vision of Ramsey. I thought given the limitation of choice with regards central midfield that Wenger got it right.
The bigger question is if we have prepared sufficiently and if we could have employed better tactics during pre-season to break these sort of teams down.
Desi is spot on with regards our lack of finish/presence in the box.
This 4-3-3 makes us lean up top particularly with RVP’s propensity to drift.
I also though that there was insufficient off ball movement on our part which made our attack bog down quickly. Instead the passing made it easy for Newcastle to cover quickly.
Our top-flight signing (Gervinho) can’t fill Nasri’s boots. Ramsey looked an average player. RVP didn’t get service as Arsenal showed absolutely no creativity. Rosicky was also very average. Frimpong can tackle but can’t pass.
Best Arsenal players on the pitch: Szeczensy was very decisive and the defense was solid.
Absolutely zero creativity in this side. Arsenal desperately need someone to ‘replace’ Cesc, a CDM with positional sense and ability to link play, and a CB.
What a first day to the premiership! It seems the men in black have started where they left off last season which must have been the worst in recent history.
The Richardson let off at Anfield was yet another reminder of the inconsistencies we will no doubt continue to see this season.
Peter Walton, without seeing anything himself and without conferring with his linesmen gave Gervinho a Red and Barton a Yellow?!?! What?! Why? How?
And what will happen tomorrow? Nothing. No in fact Song will probably get a retrospective ban as his incident wasn’t seen by the ref… While Barton, even though his actions were not “seen”, as he was given a yellow he will get no further punishment!
Why can’t we hear what the ref says during the match like in rugby? Why can’t the ref’s explain their decisions? Why are they the only men on the football pitch NOT accountable for their actions?
Some things it seems will never change.
Wenger would be wise to let this one go.
If he puts in a complain on Barton/Gervinho, it might bring up the sissue of Song.
Barton has made it his psecialty in dismissing Arsenal players of late and manhandling them whenever he wants.
Our players were foolish. They should have played the ‘victim’ to Barton’s abuse.
Live and learn Gervinho.
Arshavin was good on more than the two occasions. He is the visionary replacement for Cesc. Problem today was making smooth runs and pin point passes. But since this group hasn’t played together a lot, and since it was the opener i can understand. Defense was rock solid and that has usually always been the down fall in previous seasons. Goals will come and they will come plenty. Gervihno looked very much the player he looked like in Ligue 1. Would have liked to see him against top tier teams in the next couple games to see whether he can transport his game into the EPL or not,but oh well. rosiscky and ramsey cant be played together. it is too mediocre of a set up there. wishere is needed a lot . with him in the game today iam sure we would’ve gotten a goal.. song was immense. he is arsenals fear factor But he has to lie deep. And now that Walcott is going to be back starting we will get a good connection up front with RVP Walcott and Arsha. PLUS Wilshere should be back. NOW if the defense can play next 2 games like today we are looking at 6 points i am sure
Defense was solid enough.
But I think we paid the price for being a bit tentative at times and not coming forward in sufficient numbers to support the front men.
Quite often as the game wore on, the attacking players were simply outnumbered and out of option and had to await the support of the rest of the team who were too slow in coming forward.
It’s hard to get the mix right. I think on another day with Jack in the squad, there would have been a better balance between moving forward and covering defensively. Not today alas.
Sigh,no gervinho for three tough prem games. Anyway,we in blind faith mode now as we stuck with what our manager has given us so Bring on Miyachi!!!!
I was very impressed with Gibbs. He made a number of good decisions, intercepting passes and made good runs down the line. Hope he keeps this up and we will all soon forget Clichy.
Our two CBs looked very solid and hopefully we will bring in Mercheseker and Vertongan so address once and for all our CB depth needs.
The midfield looked very sad with no creativity or fast, accurate ball movement. The answer to our problem here in terms of a replacement for Cesc is Schneider from Inter. A proven, world class player. His experience and skill will provide our youngsters with the leadership they need and our forwards with the service they need to become more dangerous.
Walcott reminds me of Nasri after Man City started tapping him up. Indecisive and really not at all interested in playing in the game. Looks like the Chelsea tapping up rumours may have some basis of justification after all. RVP had no service and looked frustrated for most of the 2nd half. Gervinho has potential but needs to show off his speed more to cause the defence problems. Bring on Alex O….
Our boys looked nervous and showed fear of Barton all afternoon. What will they do when we play Stoke or Bolton.
Gonna be a long, sad season unless Arsene spends some cash to bring in at least three experienced players.
Yes, we are being bullied by Barton and we aren’t responding in the right way.
We know what he’s like. It is pure stupidity to let him get the better of us. Alas…
I’d like to think that Theo was not 100% fit and that’s obviously why he wasn’t playing at his best.
Great to finally watch some football. Now hopefully these people moaning about buying two defenders will shut up. Gibbs looked like he’d been playing in the team for ages and contributed much more than Clichy would have. Now maybe they will see why Arsene has bought wingers. I hope to god that Arsene spends the money he gets for Nasri and Fabregas because 60m could turn this team into title contenders. The solid base is there but the midfield is threadbare and we do need to look at some quality in there.
I expected that a situation like the one involving the red card would work out as it did for us. Arsenal should expect no favours from the refs and the best way to stick it up Barton and the ref would have been to score a cracker! I really hope we spend the money. Arsene has addressed many problems so lets hope that he can make the finishing touches to our squad.
Lastly, after watching the Liverpool game you could see the energy and confidence injected by Liverpool’s new signings. I was glad to see how quickly that mood dropped when Suarez skied his penalty. Had he put it away I think we would have faced a team at its confidence peak just as we were on a massive low. I really do think that if Arsene makes his dealings before the Liverpool game we will see a much more confident Arsenal out on the pitch. To me, they looked in stark contrast to Liverpool in that the confidence just wasn’t there when needed. A confident Arsenal would have put 3 or 4 past Newcastle last night. Let us hope that there are some teams out there who are willing to let go of there stars once we flash some money their way! Vertonghen, Hazard and Benzema would be nice!!!
The first offender was Barton, kicking Song in the calf with an illegal tackle from behind. Even in primary school you learn that those kinds of tackles are illegal.
From there the game regressed.
These refs are utterly and thoroughly clueless. Might as well be watching Fawlty Towers rather than football.
They may be clueless but we can ill afford to give them the excuse to punish us.
We have to be more clever about it. No excuse.
It’s quite evident that we mis better service from the middle.
Particularly with the pace injection of Gervinho (Walcott, Miyaichi, Chamberlain), we need someone who can lie deep and release the ball better.
Vermaelen tried to do this from defense but we were less effective from midfield.
Again, I think we should be having a look at MOntolivo. He is quality and more importantly, he can play balls from deep but at the same time cover as a DM alongside Song.
The other thing is our tactical set up. Again, I am not so sure if 4-3-3 is that effective a formation when our usual central midfield retinue is not available.
I think we should be working on a 4-4-1-1 (as Desi mentioned) sit deep a little and prepare to release the wingers down the flanks quickly (Particularly against a Newcastle side lacking pace)
If we had a MOntolivo to sit alongside Song in the middle, we could have the option of either Jack or Gervinho in the hole behind RVP. Walcott, Arsharvin, Miyaichi or Chambelain out wide.
We simply need to hit them faster before they clam shut. We seem to have part of the tools for this but not all of them.
Hopefully Wenger will learn this time from the experience (as he mentioned on the main site) as he clearly hasn’t seemed to from the last time we drew 4-4-4.
On the positive side, at least we didn’t slip4 goals when we went 10 down I suppose.:D That’s an improvement.
wrestling a pig really is a waste of time
WENGER,WHERE IS THE CENTRAL DEFENDER AND CESC AND NASRI REPLACEMENT SIGNINGS?
AS FOR THE MATCH I DID NOT LIKE VAN PERSIE’S BOARD LANGUAGE, DID NOT EVEN ACKNOWLEDGE OTHER PLAYERS WHEN THEY ATTEMPTEND TO GET HIM THROUGH, NO THUMBS UP OR CLAPPING. HE SHOULD FOLLOW CESC TO SPAIN IF HE IS STILL SULKING ABOUT HIS TRANSFER OR IS HE UNHAPPY ABOUT THE LACK OF TRANSFER ACTIVITY? IF WE DO NOT QUALIFY FOR THE CHAMPIONS LEAGUE PROPER, HE MAY HAND IN A TRANSFER REQUEST.
Stop writing in caps?
“I thought we had a solid performance and were in control. Newcastle had last season’s 4-4 more in their mind than we did. They organised not to concede goals, defended well and it was very difficult for us because we played a team who was highly focused to defend. We missed something, the regret is that we missed something in the final third and in the speed of our passing. But, overall, we had a good performance. I can’t remember giving Newcastle a chance at goal and, away from home, you have to give credit to our team for that.” – Arsene Wenger
I guess he is happy with a top 6 finish.
We cannot continue to play Arshavin on the wing. He is better in the center.
I can make a case that football is the worst adjudicated/refereed sport in the world. It’s not just Arsenal games, you can watch any football game and see more than a handful of decisions that make you say WTF!!!
I’ve had an injury of the same magnitude as Ramsey, and frankly speaking, whenever you’re out playing with your friends, it almost automatically comes into the back of your head. I sympathise with Rambo, and there is a ton of difference between playing in a muddy ground in India with people going easy on you and the not so gentle English game. Hope he gets back to his best as soon as can be!
I agree with 3453sdsd45345345
We need to worry about RVP’s attitude in yesterday’s match.
Leadership is a key intangible that is missing in our Team.
Maybe I’m on the wrong page for this comment, nonetheless about the Nasri-Berba swap:
Nasri for Dzeko? I’d be very keen. Not only for the economic fit, which seems to be the only concern when Wenger picks his signings but also the technical one.
Though there lies the argument that with Gervinho, AOC, Miyaichi, Joel Campbell we’ve got numbers in that department, I believe we clearly are in need of a potent attacker – someone who creates, converts, retains possession in the final third or brings others into play. Dzeko, I believe, has the ability to do the lot.
He can hold the ball up, making telling runs into the box, link up well with the midfield, put in a good shift and finish.
While everyone grabs at the chance to sing van Persie’s praises for his vein of form post January, I’d like to ask how many goals have the attackers around him scored in the same period? Why the likes of Nasri, Arshavin and Walcott got to double figures as early as December only to fizz out since?
Also, how many times have we seen lame, hopeful cross sweeping the opponent’s backline with no one in red ‘n’ white in the vicinity?
This highlights how accommodating the dutchman into our system isn’t without its flaws. Not just from a goal scoring perspective, but also not retaining/losing the ball which for a club like arsenal is a potent break opening us up.
As with Dzeko, the lad has got the mobility and technique to play for Arsenal while having the power, work rate and awareness to provide able cushion for van Persie to have his stamp on the game.
I’d also like to think having the bosnian would get more out Ramsey and Wilshere, courtesy: our system and philosophy.
His wages, fee for starters would be more affordable; With Aguero’s arrival and Tevez staying, he wouldn’t be dead against joining the gunners.
What are your thoughts?
I think it is obvious that what was missing was a creative midfielder. Most middle order teams have now learnt that they can defend against Arsenal by puttting plenty of players behind the ball in their final third. If we want to play attractive football, score and win which I understand is Wenger’s philosphy then We have to have some one to replace Fab& Nasri.Wilshire and Ramsey are still some way behind to fill their shoes.Incisive pass which cuts through the defence is the only answer. If not we should adapt a different style of playing. The bottom line is if we want to emulate a team like Barcealona then you have to have the players skilled enough to do it.Rosiscky,Song&Arshavin are not the answer I am Afraid.
