Stoke City 3 – 1 Arsenal: Match Thoughts And Individual Analysis

Take all of Arsenal’s weaknesses and put them in a blender. The result will not be very different from what we saw at the Britannia Stadium on an eminently forgettable day.

As I’d feared, Arsene started with Arshavin on the left. It was a bad mistake. The way Stoke are set up, having Arshavin and Walcott on the wings adds to redundancy in attack and leaves the defence vulnerable.

While I do complement the Russian on his willingness to track back and put a tackle in, the first goal came from a needless foul conceded, somewhat predictably, by the little man. Undeniably, the defending was shambolic and once again raises the question, how do these players train for such moments? When fingers can be pointed towards three of four players one has to wonder how signing one or two players is going to bring about a sea change in Arsenal’s defence!

If the first goal was annoying, the second was farcical. Ramsey was completely free in space around the half-way line when he received the ball. He played a blind reverse pass towards Sagna that went straight to Pennant. Inexperience perhaps? To make matters worse, the youngster took a few seconds to realize his error and that gave the former Arsenal man enough time to run at goal. Sagna moved away from him and Djourou took too long to close him down. Szczesny was caught off his line as the ball deflected over the Keeper and into the back of the net.

The goals were the main story of the first half but an equally important side note was the inability of the Gunners to convert all the possession into even a single meaningful chance.

Ramsey and Wilshere just didn’t have the quality or vision to break down a superbly organized home defence. Walcott was rendered impotent as no midfield player could find him in space. Arshavin was having to track back a lot as Stoke had a simple but highly effective strategy of hoofing the ball behind Gibbs. When the Russian did manage to move forward he wasn’t able to make a dent in the nine-man bus that Stoke has intelligently parked.

When Arsenal have been successful in many away games this season, a key tactical aspect has been the areas of possession. It is usually in the central third of the pitch. In this game, probably due to the inexperience of Wilshere and Ramsey, Arsenal played a lot of football just in front of the Stoke box. That is by far the most dangerous place to play this sort of a game. It allows the opponents to pack their box making it virtually impossible to penetrate. It also pulls a number of Gunners forward leaving acres of spaces open for counter-attacks. Tony Pulis must have seen his dream fulfilled. It wasn’t a coincidence that Arsenal had all the possession and very little incisiveness whereas Stoke were comfortable in defence and probing with their counter-attacks.

Wenger did make a couple of changes at half-time. Ramsey and Arshavin made way for Chamakh and Bendtner. It gave Arsenal more of an impetus in the second half but the chances were still limited. Neither Chamakh nor Bendtner have played often enough so it’s hard to blame them. Indeed, I’d like to praise their professionalism and the effort put in despite the undoubted frustration they must be feeling.

Stoke were relatively comfortable despite the changes as Arsenal just didn’t know how to make use of the main strengths of these players. Bendtner, who could have been a real menace in the box, rarely got in the right areas. The first real chance for Arsenal fell to Van Persie when the Dane was finally able to get into the box. Begovic made a crucial save.

Things improved, but only marginally, when Rosicky was introduced for Song. He should have come in for Walcott, who was struggling to find space as this move left the defence even more vulnerable.

The Gunners got one back after a moment of quality from Little Mozart. He played a brilliant ball to Chamakh even though he was facing his own goal. This caught the Stoke defence by surprise, something Wilshere and Ramsey had failed to do, and allowed the Moroccan to link up with Van Persie. Bendtner’s run opened up space for the Dutchman who finished with his chocolate leg.

Song was sorely missed moments later as Arsenal went from the sublime to the ridiculous in the blink of an eye. As usual a long ball was played beyond Gibbs. The midfield didn’t get back in time and Stoke were able to get a shot on goal even though the defenders were doing a good job. That shot looked harmless as the horrible state of the pitch sucked all its venom. Djourou tried a clearance but couldn’t get any power on the stretch. Wilshere was caught ball watching as Walters was able to attack it and knock it home.

After that the game petered out as the home side got a well deserved win.

This game wasn’t very meaningful in the context of the season. Hopefully, it will serve as a timely reminder to Arsene that he needs genuine, high-quality help in certain areas. The Premiership was not as competitive in his early years and that helped cover up his blind-spots as the Gunners accumulated a number of trophies. It won’t work anymore.

Individual Performances:

Szczesny: Could have done better for all three goals, especially the second. He isn’t ready for the first team and Arsenal have been paying the price of Fabianski’s injury.

Sagna: Struggled to make an impact in the attacking areas. Wasn’t targeted by Stoke so had a relatively easier time in defence.

Djourou: Awful.

Koscielny: The only defender to come away with credit in this game. Hardly made a mistake. Got in the right positions, chased and harassed the attackers, got his foot in when he had to.

Gibbs: His flank was the obvious target for the home side. Should have had more support but Arsenal as a club have been unable to find a workable solution to this. Extremely poor in the attacking areas even when he has space and time.

I thought the back five were disappointing at the very least. The full-backs have been struggling ever since the change in formation so I don’t want to blame the individuals. Djourou and Szczesny, who were the fans’ favourites a short while back, have been found wanting in the final few weeks.

Song: Made a few mistakes but in general offered good cover in front of the defence.

Wilshere: Fought hard, didn’t shy away from the physical battle, wasn’t able to offer any quality in the attacking areas.

Ramsey: Woeful mistake that led to the second goal. Couldn’t offer any penetration in attack.

I thought the midfield paid the price of their inexperience and the fact that they haven’t played together often enough. Against United they got away with it because of one key lapse in concentration by the opponents and also the fact that Arsenal were mentally focussed on defending. In this one, the midfield didn’t provide enough cover to Gibbs and should share the blame for the second and third goals.

All said and done, it is too early to say either Wilshere or Ramsey can take over from Cesc.

Walcott: Was always crowded out. His strengths can easily become his weaknesses when not used in an intelligent manner.

RvP: Scored a good goal. Tried really hard. His movement was good but there was no chemistry with the others in attacking areas.

Arshavin: Not the kind of game where he should be playing. Gave his best but started the dominoes rolling with a soft foul.

I thought the front three lacked a spark and more crucially some height and presence. Wenger should either have gone for a defensive player on the left to support Gibbs or put Bendtner in there from the start.

Subs: Bendtner looked like a threat whenever he got in the box. Chamakh showed good touches but really needs to improve his shooting by a few notches. Rosicky offered the kind of threat that was missing for most of the game.

Wenger: Should have picked a more balanced starting eleven. The fact that it was so predictable shows it’s an area, certain tactical aspects, where he needs help. Should have asked his midfield to pull back and draw the opponents out. Another problem that has been repeated too often but we have seen some visible efforts in this area. Had to find a way to get Gibbs more support. Clichy has lost a lot as he has been exposed way too often. There is a real threat that the young Englishman could lose his confidence and attacking instincts.

You are saying the problem is not in the defenders but our coaching philosophy so will it change suddenly this summer
and you abdicate blame from Bendy and Chamakh by sayin they haven’t played enuf so then what’s the purpose of 2nd and 3rd choice strikers if they can’t deliver once in a while in this case consistently ….

  2. Kushagra India says:

Hats off to Fergie(never thought will say this) for landing the 12th BPl title with this team and reachin UCL final(luck of the draw played a big part)….

“As Ferguson fired himself up for the business end of the season – Wenger sulked, moaned, chucked bottles and made excuses.” – Piers Morgan

    • Davi says:

Wow. Is he lying or does he just ignore the words that come out of ferguson’s mouth? Just last week he was practically blaming the ref after we’d taught them a lesson.
People like this also seem to close their ears when wenger admits the team were poor, or says he can see that we need to improve certain areas. He gave credit to stoke today and said we weren’t good enough.
The truth of the matter is that we have been royally screwed in a number of games this season (obviously not today), and largely not criticised the refs publicly (nothing was really said after the newcastle farce) while united have clearly gained overall (at least ELEVEN CLEAR RED CARDS AVOIDED), and yet ferguson has consistently come out saying the refs are biased against his side, which has led to bans, and yet the memes that wenger is nothing but a whinger and fergie is a pure winner still persist.

  4. Metalhead says:

Stewart Robson in commentary summed it up brilliantly. “To improve, first you must admit that there are problems with this side”. The moment Arsene acknowledges it, that will be the first step toward successful journey ahead.

    • Davi says:

      He did that recently.

      • DC Gunz says:

        First, Arsene deserves criticism.

Second, it is silly to suggest Arsene has not wanted to improve the squad (again, he may deserve criticism for not doing more on that front).

Third, it is laudable that despite the team’s faults and his own that he continues to defend his players.

Does anyone actually think it would be wise for a manager who hoped the squad would succeed to criticize them and tell the media they aren’t good enough?

    • metalhead says:

What nonsense? When did I say Arsene needs to criticize his players in public?

  5. Kushagra India says:

Sorry for my over the top comments but some serious change needs to be done on the coaching side…..

  6. Kushagra India says:

“United’s record in 259 previous PL matches when they took a 2-0 lead is 253 wins, six draws and ZERO defeats.
    We cant say that…

  7. @Kushagra
Great point about united. That’s something that we lack and the players have failed to step up..Any way, the loss was very very disheartening and just summed up our season. Not consistent enough. That’s the verdict. No drive against stoke and deservedly got the thumping.

  8. Domhuaille MacMathghamhna says:

Disgraceful lack of defensive nous and equally disgraceful lack of finishing…our midfield was disorganized…what a sad end to the season, however we are still in the CL and maybe 3rd is the best we should have expected this season?
United will win the EPL for the 19th time and more power to them! All I hope is that Liverpool can make it back into the top 4 this season.

  9. bob says:

    WENGER OUT !

  10. cesc says:

to say we were supposed to still be in with a shout of the premiership title at 2.00pm we sure looked average against a stoke side that was saving itself for the cup final.
what a shambles our defence is. for the last 4 or 5 years it’s been kick the ball towards our goal and you will score. if our football club was the workshop floor someone would have to be sacked.

WHERE ARE ALL THOSE MOUTHY GOONER WANKERS WHO WERE GIVING IT THE BIG ONE JUST AFTER YOU LOST THE CARLING ABOUT HOW YOU “WILL SILL WIN SOMETHING THIS SEASON” ???

ANYONE KNOW WHERE THEY ARE ??

YOU KNOW WHO YOU ARE DON’T YOU !!

BIG MOUTHED DELUSIONAL WANKERS WHO HAE WON FUCK ALL FOR 6 LONG YEARS

    • Ash says:

And who the hell are you? Everyone chats so much about this six years crap but don’t you worry. Form is temporary and class is permanent! We will rise again and live up to our reputation as one of the best English clubs and even if we don’t I will support this club till I die. It’s in my blood. So f@*k off and come back when you have something constructive to say.

      • mike in africa says:

“Form is temporary and class is permanent”, you pointed out the problem right there… current arsenal lacks class to win anything.

      • steve says:

i am from the team that will win 19 championships – so you f@*k off and come back and see me when your so called reputation is worth anything – so how long do we have to wait for this temporary change? – arsehole wenger keeps coming up with his excuses – and you fall for them.
the truth not constructive enough for you???

      • Ash says:

@steve…..where to begin!!!!? Firstly, before the premier league began Man United went 27 years without winning the title so we have a long way to catch up to that record!!!!! I also seem to remember that you boys got relegated in that period too! Says a lot about your history! Secondly, we are not in a position to BUY our way to the title like you boys (You have three £30 million pound players in your squad this season alone!!!!) so our success may take a while longer to achieve but ultimately it will taste sweeter and patience is a virtue. Thirdly, this season we have been royally shafted on a REGULAR basis in regards to refereeing decisions. Whereas your lot seem to have had the rub of the green , to say the least! How many of your players should have been sent off but haven’t been?! I could go on but no point as I have neither the time nor the inclination to justify my beliefs to a man that would prefer to goad other fans rather than celebrate your own teams performance. Says a lot about your character but to be fair, it is indicative of the way most of your dirty manc fans are in general! If you can’t understand some of the words I have just used because your from up north, and judging by your comments you seem to have a limited vocabulary, just use a dictionary!

    • Davi says:

We don’t get away with elbowing players in the head!
We don’t get away with kicking players in the chest!
We don’t get away with pushing referees!
We don’t get away with kicking players off the ball!
We don’t get away with throwing fellows pros to the ground when we’re angry at losing!
We don’t get away with trying to score with our hands!
We don’t get away with blocking crosses with our hands!
We don’t get away with two bookable offences!

We don’t get away with shit we’re not supposed to – it makes a difference!!!!

    • Gfunk says:

      Pri*k!

  12. reality check says:

at the end of last season Wenger said something along the lines of.. the team who concedes 41 goals has no chance of winning the league. we have let in 39 with 2 games to go, we had less injuries than last year and for the last three seasons we have performed consistantly poor in champs league. 2008 knocked out in semis. 2009 in quaters and 2010 in last 16. where is the so called improvement?

    • Davi says:

We were 2nd around halfway through the season with practically no contributions from fabregas or van persie. The team as a whole dropped a bit about halfway but rvp came back and has been quality since, but cesc hasn’t been 50% of the player he was last season. I think the fabregas of last season might have made a difference for us.
Overall which player hasn’t played better than last season overall except fabregas? I’d say arshavin and arguably some fringe players like denilson, gibbs and almunia – everyone else has been as good or better than last season.

      • reality check says:

i am concerned about arsenal not players. let me help you understand where i am coming from.i dont know if you remember that last year the last few premier league games were quite hyped after we lost the champs league and we had the easiest run according to everybody.. so if you remember what happend in the end you’ll see some pattrens e.g draws and defeats under pressure etc.. i am concerned about the team’s progress.

  13. nicky says:

Great post. I wouldn’t disagree with a single word of the summary of the game.

  14. realistic tony says:

was anyone surprised at this result? Stoke didnt even rely on the ariel threat from long balls or throw-ins, they just pressured us on the deck. We pulled a goal back and stoke responded within a minute so for me it shows that had stoke wanted to they could have hit 5 or so.Pulis has a mean, no-nonsense defense and a tough spine through his team.He has the basis of a very good side and just needs a few flair players to push on to challenge the top 6. It all stems from a strong defens. Wenger could take note from this, but he probably wont and will give us the bullcrap spin of “we conceded less goals from open play than any other team”.Looking at the season as a whole, we were not a genuine title challenger, i think we were thereabouts by the quality of RVP, CESC,wilshire, nasri, and arshavins goal assists.
Its a worrying situation for next season, especially with the mad professor in charge.

  15. andy says:

From defence to attack…Arsenal are poor. Lesser teams have us sussed. We not only are weak defensively, but are weak mentality. Now Arsenal are now struggling to create scoring chances. Teams now know that even though Arsenal dominate possession they are hardly a thread against a half decent defence.

Increased ticket prices, third highest wage bill in EPL, expensive tickets, one of the largest squads, over paid kids, manager who is unable to motivate his players, players in the comfort zone, …blah blah blah.

I really don’t think the manager is able to fix this problem…unless he changes…which I can’t see happening. Buying experienced players is only part of the answer.

Expect more of the same next season.

    • Ash says:

It’s simple. Buy Samba, Parker and Agbonlahor. Get rid of Denilson, Bendtner, Rosicky, Squilaci and Arshavin. That should reduce the wage bill and add experienced QUALITY to our side. Frimpong will also be a useful addition. We don’t need height to defend set pieces. Man united only have three 6″ plus players in their side. The difference is they all know their jobs. Djourou lost his marker and the annoying thing is jones didn’t even do anything clever! He just checked his run a bit. School boy stuff. Samba would sort it out along with the verminator!

      • Davi says:

agbonlahor? how long would it take for fans to tire of his notorious inconsistency? Same with ashley young, I really hope we let Utd or someone sign him.
Samba I quite like but would he fit into our side? I’m not sure… maybe.
And parker is great, but how much would we have to pay for this 30 year old given that there is likely to be a bit of competition for him? I think he would be a good signing overall, though.

Personally I think the problems are almost completely tactical – we need to be more adaptable to keep teams guessing how we will decide to play imo.
Also I think wenger has selected the wrong players at times recently. Djourou hasn’t looked himself recently, but squillaci has started to look good again – he was the obvious choice to start imo, as he was against bolton and liverpool really.

      • Ash says:

@davi. I agree with your point about tactics. I think instead of playing 4-2-3-1 we should play 4-1-3-1-1. Robin can play in bergkamp role. He drops deep most of the time anyway! In order for that system to work we need more pace in the team so we can use the ball over the top more effectively. That will make teams hold a deeper line which will give our ball players more space. At the moment inky Walcott can get in behind. We need more. But that is an offensive formation. Hence we need a proper holding player with PL experience. Parker fits the bill and will come cheap if west ham get relegated. But the genius of ferguson is he plays different formations / players to suit different teams. Against us he hardly ever plays two up top Coz he knows that’s suits us so he packs the midfield. Wenger NEVER does that. He says the players are naive but if u ask me he’s the naive one! Especially if he thinks Bentdner can play right midfield!!!!

  16. Slugboy says:

I love wenger, but I must agree that the tactics are stale and need a shake up. I also agree that we need a balance of youth and experience. We need some height and we need a free kick taker. We need to play with a big centre forward. If Manu and Chelski had played well this year we would be 30 points behind. I see no improvement this year, but still think wenger is the man to change it and send us to victory next year

  17. GoonerDave says:

Again our lack of experience has made us look woeful. We can rant about Wenger, the tactics etc. but the obvious lack of seasoned campaigners in our squad is costing us again and again.
I like Szczesny, and think hes a great prospect, but we are Arsenal. He should be no.2. Same for Song. Lots of potential but should be learning from a senior player.
I dont blame our back 4 as individuals. We dont defend as a team. Any type of ball in the air, a corner, a free kick, even just a hopeful punt, and half our team are chasing shadows.
If only Arsene would sign Buffon and Toulalan. The sickening thing is we are so close, but may as well be miles away.
If Cesc is leaving, we need to grasp the chances it brings – we can abandon this 4 3 3 which is built around him, and also we can spend big on a holding player and balance our light and inexperienced midfield.
I dont want Arsene to leave, but Id like him to be given some proper cash and to spend it.

    • Davi says:

Song was our most consistent player for 3 seasons before this year where his role has (perhaps foolishly) been changed. He was played deeper against Utd and that was the main reason we controlled them so well defensively.
Perhaps you are right about szczesny, but perhaps he IS no.2 behind fabianski.

“If Cesc is leaving, we need to grasp the chances it brings – we can abandon this 4 3 3 which is built around him”
      - Well, I agree with this. The 4-3-3 has destroyed our fullbacks and our defence as a whole, but spending big isnt necessarily the answer – spending *smart* is always better. I mean Utd spent nearly 3 times as much on carrick (and hargreaves) compared to what they did for ronaldo, and which one turned out to be the best investment. Also Park cost them about 3m I think. Similarly ferdinand was 3x more expensive than vidic, but I think they are about as good as each other.

  18. GoonerDave says:

    Davi-
Have to disagree with your comments re Song. I cannot accept he was our most consistent performer of the last 3 seasons. Vermaelen, Cesc, Sagna etc. have all out performed him in consistency at different periods.
If Fabianski is no.1, then I want a new one! I dont think hes good enough at all.
As for money, I didnt mean silly money but even 25M would get 2 decent players.

    • Davi says:

I can’t have that. Cesc was amazing last season but only played for half of it. Vermaelen was good but song was just better. In each game over the past 2.5-3 seasons song was one of our top three players when in midfield.
I think fabianski has put in some great performances this year and his mistakes are disappearing. He looked more mentally ready than szczesny who I think will overtake him soon. I’m happy with these 2 as first and second choice to be honest. I also think mannone can be a quality keeper if he can avoid injury.

  19. David O says:

Good summary mate. Few musings of my own:

Djourou: agreed, awful. Was at the Emirates a few months back to see them play Everton and he got away with 2 horrendous errors. He never has been good enough for us and never will be I’m afraid, it’s a fact. No agression, rubbish in the air and makes massive mistakes regularly.

Szczesny: Have to strongly disagree with you here, he’s been one of our best players of late – he actually makes saves! He’s got great presence and self belief and I think we could easily have him as our keeper for the next dozen years. Quality player.

Tactics: Wenger’s been found wanting so many times this year with formations and structures. Frustrating how pundits only ever comment on the players when it goes wrong and not the shape of the team set up. Our “fluid” formation abdicates defensive responsibility for so many and leads to massive holes for any half decent team to exploit. Our players aren’t currently good enough to cover up these tactical deficiencies and win the league I’m afraid.

However I believe that with 3 very decent signings it could be turned around.

It’s only so frustrating cos we’re sooo close!

Arsenal prem champs 2011 (can only live in hope!)

  20. james says:

Samba comes out to say he was close to joining us this January and I wonder what happened to stop that, who knows if we couldn’t pay the extra million or two but trust the club to ask fans to pay 7% more for watching the same old failure time and time again.
I have said the same again and again- I have no empathy for a number of current Arsenal players. Why? Because I’m certain they have 0 empathy for me. Ray Parlour today sounded as pained as I feel and I’m sure he’d have felt the same if he was on the team, can I say the same about the overpaid Denilson, Diaby, Bendtner, ‘grossly-overpaid’ Almunia etc? A deep and resounding NO!
These players have got something they haven’t earned and if Wenger doesn’t have the guts to drop some of his ‘gems’ who have tuned him out completely (if he’s even training them properly rather than telling them football is all about some circus act where you pass the ball just outside the opponent’s center circle, make 0 runs into the box to actually draw defenders, practise close to 0 set tactics for defending set pieces and depend on your intricate ‘skill’), then just as his Monaco employers discovered, it is time for this great, but prideful manager to wish us goodbye or for ticket prices to come to levels that we fans understand are needed to support a team that will definitely entertain us but could care less about the fundamentals of true competition- determination and character.
Quite simply, I’m ok supporting the Harlem Globetrotters of the premiership if I’m told beforehand that that’s the plan. Experience can not be purchased for free, that’s why it’s called ‘experience’

  21. Manav says:

What the ESPN commentators were voicing yesterday is exactly what you’ve been saying all season long – HOW DO THEY GO ABOUT DEFENDING? WHAT’S THEIR DEFENSIVE STRATEGY? THERE’S LACK OF A CLEAR-CUT APPROACH TO HOW THEY GO ABOUT THEIR DEFENDING. THIS IS SOMETHING THE COACHING STAFF HAS TO LOOK INTO. ARE THEY DOING ENOUGH TRAINING FOR DEFENSE ‘CAUSE THIS HAS BEEN HAPPENING FAR TOO OFTEN FOR ARSENAL – were some of the comments I can recall.

    • Manav says:

After so many mishaps I guess everyone should’ve realised by now that it really is, as you say, a SYSTEMIC issue, that CANNOT be solved by signing 15m+ Pounds defenders alone.

      • santori says:

        Here here.

        I think we need :

        1) A new assistant

        and/or

        2) A defensive specialist coach

        3) a Offensive specialist coach

If anything, whilst improving our specific performances in this areas, it will also afford Wengert the opportunity to grrom his succession from inhouse if need be.

  22. santori says:

    Gutted.

What a meek performance to round up our minimal chance at the title as is.

I’ve been on recor for saying that what we have centrally in defense is good enough when Vermaelen returns but on basis of today’s performance, I am just not so sure.

Although I still feel that coaching and tactics need a massive overhaul and change in direction, I do think we should seriously consider an experience defender (in lieu of Squillaci) as an insurance ploicy (come complimentary arrangement) IF TV/(and particularly) Djouorou falter.

Whilst a bargain could be had in an UPson from West Ham (old boy girt), I think we will need more than mere passion. Perhaps what we do need is someone in the mold of Lucio (@Inter) who has won things and whilst @32 closing out his career, still has sufficient speed and techincal ability to offer us in the event of Djourou failing to convinve next season.

  23. santori says:

With regards the set up, absolutely agree that Arsharvin (with Walcott0 against Stoke was not the right balance and we got a tad carried away with Ramsey against United for our own good.

One of the big lads in the squad today 9Bendtner or Chamakh) would have helped.

Also although Arsharvin does add fragility to our left, I don’t think he can be wholly culpably as our covering was simply poor in the set pieces.

Gibb’s inexperience shorn through (which makes you appreciate Clichy)

Absolutely agree with you on our positonal naivity going forward.

And I don’t think it helpd our cause when we don’t put things away up front enough (RVP from a yard out!)

Whilst we should look toward revmaping our defensive coaching set up, I do think there should be an equal look into our coaching set up to better utilise our efforts going forward tacticallyas well 9and finishing-wise)

A lot of work to be done. Buying won’t be enough.

  24. amit says:

    Good post Desi…

there are some critical problems with Arsenals defence…we need 2 bring in at least a couple of hefty and out n out defenders…wenger has to realize this!!

and people are so easy on Chezzer, he reminds me of arrogant Bendtner…ppl think Chezzer is an awesome goalie, but i beg to differ…if you compare a casillas or a buffon who have started young as well, you will know what i mean…we need a good keeper, an experienced bloke not a kid with a big mouth!!

defensive reinforcements will determine Arsenal’s next season!! period!! Wenger for the name of God please wake up!!!

  25. Kushagra India says:

Strong rumors that Nasri and Cesc will leave….

Strong rumours? The rumours appear to be strong only because idiots believe in them and spread them. I’ll trust Nasri’s agent not those in the business of spreading doom and gloom.

Tell me one thing, have you ever made a constructive point?

  26. oz_gooner says:

I think its time for fabregas to go personally.. He is not captain material for a start.

V/persie a much better choice.. Vermaelen would suit that role as well.

Time for a major haul with arsenal next year but i dont see it happening.

I dont see why wenger is persisting with carlos vela either.. He got about 8 minutes as a sub with west brom which proves this guy just cant handle the english league.

Would love to see guys like Hulk and falcao from porto come in.

hulk is a power player with good speed and a mighty left kick while falcao is quite a clever forward too with real goal sense that would complement v.persie.

These guys wouldnt cost a bomb either and would get rid of dead wood like arshavin and chamack.

As far as defending goes i dont think u have to look any further than our own league.

If you look at the lower end of the league ladder u could buy the best of what west brom, wolves, west ham. wigan and even what stoke have to offer.

They would be reasonably cheap home grown players with lots of experience and couldnt do any worse i believe than most of our defensive unit.

    • santori says:

Upson will be a cheap option (As West Ham won’t be playing in the PL next season). He might come with a bit of grit and added determination as an Englishman brought up through our ranks (but never really having had a chance to impress)

Other than that, Someone of the calibre (and age) of Lucio at Inter.

I’m not so sure about Hulk. I would prefer someone who has maybe lost his way a little but is still top quality. Benzema is worth tracking. He has the speed that we are sorely lacking right on the apex.

      • oz_gooner says:

We wouldnt be able to afford benzema’s salary dude.. remember fabregas in on 85 k a week and benzema could easily command 150 k at real m and anywhere else.

Anyway arsenal major problem lies in the centre of midfield , in particular DM and CB and LB.

Wengers strategy in the final 3rd is so predictable now and he needs change it.

We cant afford players in the likes of messi, villa or iniesta that can do what wenger wants done

Have u noticed that when we are in the final 3rd how we slow down to try to make that leathal assist? its not going to work most of the time because we cant do it quickly enough.

This is what barcelona are the best at .
They move from the back slowly and progressively faster through the middle then gun it in the final third and thats what scares defences.

Please go through it if you can.

This season has been a blemish on football.

  29. critic says:

“The Premiership was not as competitive in his early years and that helped cover up his blind-spots as the Gunners accumulated a number of trophies. It won’t work ”

What kind of pathetic statement is that??? by saying that, u say arsene won trophies when league was not competitive enough.

Don’t take it to your heart but FACK OFF.

    • santori says:

Actually the league is more competitive and times have changed.

Taking nothing away from our wins back in those years, the game has gotten a lot more technical now (particularly with the ‘lesser’ teams) plus there have now been several teams who have (are able) been investing in higher quality players.

So I’m not quite sure what problem you’re having with the statement and why you’re throwing a hissy fit over it.;)

      • critic says:

stoke and bolton are not technical teams. These kind of teams represent typical english football. More competitiveness is because of top 8.

        Put things in perspective.

      • santori says:

Yes but their tactics over the recent years have been very effective and particularly calibrated when playing against us.

Put it this way, we got away with playing lower end opposition back then but it isn’t quite so cut and dry now.

Teams know our weakness(es) and they have bought (wisely) in order to play against us.

Just the top 6 teams alone would represent a jump in ability by the kind of players they are now able to pay for.

Arsenal’s last win was pre-Mourinho. Looking beyond the obvious strength and spending power of CHelsea, we now facee City (ask yourself who is playing for them now), Spurs (VDV, Bale, Modric) and a resurgent Liverpool.

Add to that the ability of teams beneath the top 6 (your Stoke, Bolton, Newcastle) to stifle our play and we have a slight difference from whence we were back in the early part of the century.

Footy has evolve. We must move along with it.

      • santori says:

I ‘d like to add that whilst Stoke and Bolton may not be ‘techinical’ like say Arsenal, they are certainly sufficiently technical enough to strangulate our play when need be.

Stoke didn’t need to kick us off the park yesterday to win and BOlton doesn’t adopt that tactic.

        Perspective enough for you?

    http://delhigunner.wordpress.com/2011/05/09/arsenal-is-much-like-an-indian-daily-soap-opera/

  33. Dudu says:

Agreed. Like you say, the defensive problem of ours has its roots in our training. But yesterday, we made too many glaring individual mistakes. We missed Cesc badly thats for sure.

  34. Football says:

Frankly, I haven’t really expected Arsenal to get more than a draw on Britannia Stadium. First, they lacked any motivation to get a good result as they have already secured the third place and they were out of the title race. Second, Stoke is not an easy opponent. Chelsea only managed to get a draw here in their unbeaten run of 9 matches won out of ten, with the tenth being the draw at Stoke.

    • santori says:

We’ve beaten Stoke before, the last 3 times actually.

    • AndyE says:

Yeah, I guess you forgot all those times we beat them. Especially, you know that small incident of Ramsey getting his leg broken and us still winning 3-1

  35. santori says:

Whilst I must say that our issues will not be solved by the transfer market alone, I do think that 5 signings will be a bit much to expect.

I think we’ll prob need 3 (maybe 4 if Fab leaves)

    1) Goalkeeper : Yes Szsc has made some mistakes and is just starting his learning curve but I do feel he does not lack confidence and that is a plus in his position. Fabianski is a useful challenger for the post. I think we are going to be OK with our keepers.

Besides, whilst we may say that Szsc may have done better to keep out Pennant’s shot, much of the culpability was in the midfield/defense not cloing down the space sufficiently quickly.

2)Defense : It’s the one area which you would think we need to reinforce, particularly since Djourou hasn’t been terribly convincing over the last couple of matches.

Still I would think Wenger would want to see how TV effects the equation, particularly in concert with Djourou (who has been very good apart from recent games)

The most likely prospect would be to replace the weakest link which IMO is Squillaci. But I would bring in experience, someone who has won things (Squillaci has but maybe not at the highest level). Lucio or someone of his ilk would be excellent as insurance against TV/Djourou not convincing.

Upson is another choice. Maybe he hasn’t won quite as much but he will bring the necessary grit and determination which can only come from an old boy with something yet to prove (Injury prone may be an issue here but the price will be reasonable)

3)Midfield : LW. We need someone quick and with good feet. Arsharvin should probably prosper better in field (particularly IF Fab leaves) which will (regardless lead to a requirement for a true Lwinger. Hazard is a good buy (although he won’t be cheap but Wenger does Parlez Franciase) He can play with both feet so he will give us the flexibility to switch with Nasri (in and within a game if needed). Plus he will act as an alternate for Walcott in the speed merchant department.

If Fab leaves, and Wenger isn’t sure if we can totally rely on Arsharvin/Nasri as playmakers as as yet, then maybe Gourcouff (?) @Lyon (He will link up well with Chamakh)

    4) Finally up top. IF Bendtner leaves, then I would like to see us get a fast and direct striker (who might compliement RVP in a 4-4-1-1). Bensema is worth tracking.

3-4 and that will still represent significant investment (even if we sold Fab for 40m quid). But I do think Wenger needs to bring in quality (to compliment what we have)

    • David O says:

Look this isn’t a campaign against Djourou but what are people seeing in him?

For a fact he wouldn’t start for mid-table teams in the premiership such as Everton, Birmingham or Fulham – no way – each of those clubs has 2 cbs better than him.

He can’t head (or doesn’t want to), is cumbersome, lacks concentration, aggresion, determination and positional sense…apart from this he’s a good defender!

Koscielny on the other hand is a very mobile and positionally astute player who excels against mobile forwards like Messi, Rooney and Suarez in the 2nd half of this season especially. However as a pair with Vermaelen they’re still seriously lacking in aerial ability. Therein lies one of our problems. I’d love to see us sign a player(s) like Sakho, Subotic or Samba even.

Sagna is incredibly solid defensively and in the air and we need someone at left back like him which would be a great improvement on Clichy who’s rubbish going forward and seriously lacking defensively. I’d love to see someone like Chiellini play left back for us.

      David O.

      • santori says:

        Disagree.

Djourou has only been poor of late (Bolton, Stoke)

Part from the recent slump, he has been solid for us since start of the year.

When he went missing (Newcastle), we felt the differance.

I do think he has more to learn in the game but he has stepped up this season.

I don’t think Clichy is poor either. Real would beg to differ. The fact (As desi has mentioned) is our left flank is weak when Arsharvin plays out wide (call it a loss of pace, not commitment)and Clichy gets exposed. yes he has been guilty of errors but so has everyone-else.

You are viewing through selective glasses IMO much like there was a campaign against Arsharvin ealier in the season.

Yes Djourou has been rather calamitous of late but you are not taking the holistic view into account.

Sorry, Lback is not a priority at the moment although I will agree that we should have some cover for CBack other than Squillaci.

  36. Phil23 says:

In regards to the comments above: I agree that Koscielny is a great defender and worth every cent of his transfer fee. Djourou is a potentially great defender who is still very young and inexperienced largely due to injuries. He has felt the effects of playing game after game through a big chunk of this season in 4 competitions.
In left back Clichy is a good player and Santori is right that we should keep him. Although I disagree that it is the fault of Arshavins lack of pace or lacking commitment. Arshavin is certainly not slow and lately has shown more commitment when given sufficient rest. His problem is that he plays much higher up the pitch than the like of Nasri therefore he cannot get back in time. Pretty simple really. Theo would and often does have similar problems although his insane speed helps him out at times yet he is not as good defensively as Nasri. The main problem for Clichy is the lack of a defensive midfielder to help him out. Song is there to help Sagna as he is in a deep position already and plays on the right hand side. Wilshere is constantly pushing up and when the opposition break away, you can nearly always predict what will happen according to how high up the pitch he is. Clichy makes more tackles than anyone else and is put under huge pressure. I picked up on this last year when there was a similar problem in that we only had one defensive midfielder. My solution was that we switch to a 4 2 3 1 instead of a 4 3 3 so that we were solid at the back. Arsene has sort of done this but imo not well enough. The cam does not sit high enough (for good reason as Cesc is better sitting deeper) and the defensive midfielder is… well… not a defensive midfielder. Last year I suggested Jan Vertonghen come into the squad with his versitility as a Centre back, Left back and most importantly, defensive midfielder. This year I suggest the same. Imagine if at the start of next year when Wilshere is out because of his stubbornness, we test out what its like to have a truly defensively competent team. With Vertonghen beside Song we will see less ball possession but much more solidarity. Vertonghen would fit perfectly into the position. When Clichy bombs forward he will not have to worry about what happens if he loses the ball. This will greatly benefit his game. If Vermaelen Bombs forward we have someone who will drop into his position losing no aerial ability or solidarity and still have Song to cover in front of them. Speaking of Song, we will have a genuine replacement when is is injured/badly needs a rest. When we play games like United away this is the exact tactic we need. Sure we need defensive coaches thats a given and Desi has mentioned it forever but just as important is the shape of the team. In games against tougher teams we need a different shape than in games we expect to dominate. It does not make Jack redundant it just means that we have a plan B. It also covers Left back and Centre back positions. The difference between this year and last year is that now, Vertonghen is saying he is ready to leave. If we don’t get him, someone else will and they will benefit from it. A player like him at Liverpool is one of the last pieces to their puzzle and its been said they have 100m this window so they will strengthen EVERYWHERE. Arsenal need Vertonghen and Vertonghen wants Arsenal. No brainer Arsene…

  37. Hey guys what do u think:

Is wenger like the rest of the noobs not the net? What good is a defender, experience or not, when you do not have a defensive plan or strategy? It’s like throwing Rambo into Afganistan/Libya without a plan and asking him to finish the job. That only works in the movies.

  39. Kushagra India says:

Alan Hansen on MOTD said if Ferguson had managed any of the top 4 sides they would have won the league this season. I fully agree with him…..on this…

Very late to the party here- followed the link from your comment on arsearse last night. A really nice blog- the following is the most pertinent of many great points in the match report:
“When fingers can be pointed towards three of four players one has to wonder how signing one or two players is going to bring about a sea change in Arsenal’s defence!”
I agree with this wholeheartedly- it is training and tactics that require the most work. One or two new signings should be made to inject a bit of heart and obduracy but if the defence isn’t drilled properly and set pieces continue to be such an achille’s heal. we’ll be watching the same next year…

Welcome mate. Better late than never :)

Sorry this got held up in moderation. I was busy all day.

About FFP my point has always been that it will work only if all the big clubs want it to work. Otherwise they will find a way around it. In the long run I think the clubs want to make it work because too many owners are bleeding. Not sure if it will make any difference in the next couple of years.

  41. Kushagra India says:

Thats not such a big fan of FFP especially since Barca and RM do their own TV deals..

  42. Jp says:

Desi – I have come to the conclusion that we need to make more transfers from within the Premier League for a better chance at success. Man United have a perfect blend of recruiting from other premier teams and from outside. We rely to much on recruiting from outside the league and they have no EPL experience and take time to adjust/fall off a the end of the year etc. Carrick, Valencia, Rooney, Ferdinand etc. all came from other clubs. They got great experience there and moved on. Players on my list for next year are Scott Parker, Samba, Cahill and Baines maybe. (I know it’s a dream and won’t happen) but picking players who have flourished in the EPL at lower level teams who are looking for the challenge to grow is a good path for us. We will always get the French player or other whilst Wenger is there. But if we want the experience this is the way to go. NOW please!!!!

  43. Yang says:

Arsenal is pretty close to win major trophy. I don’t know why so many transfer talking prevail. oh this is footy forum.

No need major transfer, but need to write instruction manual containing some detail of the game for stupid footballer.

    1. How to close down the game(waste few minutes). It seems like nobody know what you need to do for wasting few added minutes when team already win.

    2. What you shouldn’t do in your penalty area.
No back flick, Do not hesitate clearing when you are in doubt.

    3. What you need to do when opposition has free kick situation. Nobody have any clues.

    etc

Cut down few mistakes then all will be ok.

  44. Here’s a look at the conversation that might take place b/w Fabregas and Wenger this summer(humour):
