Was this the Wolves side that beat Manchester United!? Arsenal made them look like lame ducks. This was a solid display from all the players on the pitch and the only complaint, if one wants to be churlish, would be that the Gunners scored only two goals.
I must say the approach taken by the visitors was bit of a pleasant surprise. They were perfectly willing to come into the Arsenal half and play with a high line. It made our job that much easier. In attack we got plenty of space and in defence we faced only one trick – cross and hope.
The Gunners started brightly. Van Persie had a couple of attempts off target in the fifth and sixth minutes. After that the game slowed down for the next ten minutes or so. Wolves got a fair share of possession in that period but didn’t have any quality in the attacking third. Arsenal defenders did a good job of defending the wings and the midfield provided the required support.
At that point I was a bit disappointed we hadn’t made better use of the space in behind but I have a feeling the players were being a bit cautious and patient in this one. I also got the feeling that RvP and Cesc were still feeling the effects of their midweek illness and weren’t playing at their best.
The first goal did come when a ball was finally played in behind. We got a bit of luck that the defender played it out because the attacker, I think it was RvP, was offside and we would have conceded possession if the defender had let the ball go. Cesc was allowed plenty of time and space on the ball as he collected it down the right channel from the throw and came back inside.
It seemed to me that Robin wanted the ball played over the top to the back post. Fabregas tried that with his left foot but didn’t get it right. Van Persie did well to check his run and smashed it home on the swivel with his right. A bit of fortune about that goal but it’s something we see all big teams get. In any case it still needed a top class finish.
Soon after Arshavin delivered a good set piece and Djourou almost got on the end of it but could only win a corner. From the resulting corner Arshavin missed an open net as the ball came over the Keeper who’d misjudged the flight. It seemed the Russian wasn’t expecting it to come to him. Not what we expect from someone of his quality but it happens.
Arsenal’s best chance of doubling the lead came around the half hour mark. Wilshere found Arshavin with a trademark chip. The Russian squared it for Walcott whose shot was brilliantly saved by the Keeper. Fabregas’ follow up was cleared off the line. Wolves got a bit of luck and also deserve some credit for the save and for getting enough bodies back.
With five minutes or so to go, Wolves had a good shout for a penalty when Djourou tried a tackle inside the box. At Molineux we might have seen it given but Chris Foy seemed intent on letting the game flow as was seen a minute later when Arshavin was denied a penalty at the other end.
The final chance of an eventful half came in injury time. Song did brilliant to drive to the box and found a delightful pass for RvP. The Dutchman’s strike across goal was saved by Hennessey’s outstretched leg.
The second half started just where the first had ended. This time it was Wilshere who drove into the box and set up an open goal for Theo. The winger could only conjure a terribly annoying shot wide off goal.
In the next minute it was Wilshere again who got into the box and his cut back for Song was deflected to Van Persie on the edge of the box. Once again the finish was miscued.
The next 10-12 minutes were even as Wolves showed better ball control and Arsenal retreated into their half. Neither side was able to create an opening but many Gooners must have been a bit nervous. The commentators made me tear my hair out with their cliché-ridden utterances. On a quick side note, can I sue these guys if I go bald prematurely?
The second goal cushion came in the 56th minute. It was an amazing Arsenal goal. The ball was played out from the back by one touch passes from Sagna, Djourou, Wilshere, Song, and Cesc, who pinged it into space for Theo to run onto. Walcott squared it for Van Persie, who was flirting with off-side, and the Dutchman picked up his ninth Premier League goal in five games.
One could sense that the Gunners were a bit more relaxed after the second goal. They created a number of opportunities, some were missed and others were saved. At the other end Szczesny was rarely troubled. He had to tip over a header from Djourou from a corner and Ebanks-Blake fired a shot over. I can’t recall any other attempts at the Arsenal goal.
Individual Performances
Szczesny: Not really troubled. Dealt with the aerial balls when he had to.
Sagna: Made Jarvis and Hammill look fairly ordinary. Did well defensively but should have shown a bit more composure while crossing.
Djourou: Immense. Used his height and physical strength to dominate the aerial balls. Excellent composure on the ball. Held the strikers off well in one-v-one moments.
Koscielny: Read the game well. Provided Clichy the extra support he needed when a striker or midfielder made a run in behind. I liked his no-nonsense style and the way he wasn’t afraid to knock the ball out for a throw.
Clichy: Not as solid as Sagna but did well down the left.
I liked the way the defenders maintained their composure and dealt with the aerial balls without any panic. There were one or two moments of miscommunication between Djourou and Szczesny but it wasn’t a big deal. It was a defensive performance that proved Arsenal have been keeping clean sheets in the new year on merit.
Song: Supported Sagna on the flank. Stayed close to the defence when the team dropped back. Held off pressure and moved the ball intelligently. Picked his forward forays wisely.
Cesc: Very dominant when on the ball but not close to his best. I guess he was still feeling the effects of his illness. Passing was pretty good by normal standards but not his own.
Wilshere: Excellent on the ball. Made some penetrating forward runs. Deserved at least one assist from this game.
The midfield ensured the team never lost shape or gave the opponents too much room in attack. They also made vital contributions in attack. The Song-Wilshere combination gets my vote for MotM.
Walcott: was always a threat. Two good shots that drew excellent saves, one terrible miss, one assist. On another day he’d have scored but I don’t think he deserves any criticism. Credit to him for making the right runs, for using his head when on the ball, and for doing his bit in defence.
RvP: Two excellent goals as Van Persie makes up for lost time. I was not convinced he was fully sharp and focussed. Could have scored more with better concentration and finishing.
Arshavin: Good game from the Russian. Worked hard in attack and defence. Got in behind on a number of occasions. Unlucky not to pick up an assist.
The front three were effective and threatening but could have done better.

I haven’t seen the first goal again, but it seemed that at least cesc meant for that ball between the two defenders. perhaps van persie was not on the same wavelength initially but he got clued in pretty quick.
i guess this was nice setup for what is to come next. it’s allright to not peak before wednesday. converting all our chances in the next game could be crucial.
any way, nice write up. you’re on my short short-list of arsenal blogs these days. good job!
This was certainly a game where we could have scored four or five – but look what happened the last time we did that! – but too much criticism would be churlish. We were incisive and efficient, able to take our foot off the gas for the final 20 minutes or so and rest up for Wednesday night. Can’t really ask for much more than that, and the second goal will linger long in the memory.

Perfect tonic for our last game.
Djourou was excellent. Jack played some brilliant through balls and 9 goals for RVP,ot bad for 5 starts.:D
Best news of all Song’s back, no injuries and a slight chance that Nasri might feature in one of the upcoming Barca matches.
Our passing(and speed) was great today. Zero shots on target for the visitors says it all.
We have a couple more gears to go but if we stay at this form, we have every chance of hauling United back.
Totally agree with your assessment of Song and Wilshere as joint MotM. Song must cover more ground than anyone in the PL. He is strong with the ball and absolutely relentless pursuing to get itbback when we don’t have it. Also agree we could have scored more and Hennessy was outstanding in goal for them. Think this was the best refereeing team we have had in some time.
For me, Jack and Djourou would be Joint MoMs. The way Jack ran past defenders with elegance and ease, I was wondering we would be having our own Messi in two years time only if Lord Arsene starts to play him in Messi’s position. Nevertheless it was a complete Midfield performace from young Jack. The mere sight of DJ at the back gives me enuf confidence that I didnt worry for a single wolves corner/set piece despite wolves getting both their goals against United on setpiece.
The funny thing with the second goal was that, the linesman had no chance to make a decision on offside. With Walcott’s pace, he was totally caught out of position that he can’t call it an offside even if it is an offside. Although in this case I dont think it was offiside. But it makes me wonder, why dont we use the same tactic again in future. We can safely say, no linesman would ever be able to track an offside line..
Walcott is in his own half when the ball is played. Impossible to be offside there. Rvp in front of his marker but behind the ball. But I’m no expert.
This tactic can be deployed only if the opposing team plays a high defensive line when Theo can make use of the space at the back. The striker(in this case van Persie), who was initially offside in the first phase of play becomes onside in the second phase as soon as Theo comes in line with him.
We can certainly deploy this tactic against Barca who play a very high defensive line. Maybe Arsene has worked out one tactic that can be used against Barca and this could well be a rehearsal for the gameplan that can really hurt Barcelona.
For another in-depth explanation, do check out this link:
http://www.zonalmarking.net/2010/12/15/offside-goal/
P.S. Was sick of the commentators continually babbling about offside for our second goal, without ever coming to a definite conclusion. Maybe they should consider asking Sian Massey for some expert advice. But I doubt if their thick skulls can comprehend the rules at all!
Ahaha.. yea.. I keep shouing at the commentators to ask Sian lol .. because it certainly NOT outside.
Song is too slow for Barca. I woul have preferred Denilson to start that one
Song any day over Denilson for me!!!!
Denilson is not tough enough on defense and makes too many bad passes trying to go forward. He is, however, very good at side-to-side control, but don’t think we’ll be doing much of that v. Barca. Song’s relentless pursuit and toughness will give us an edge wherever he is on the pitch. Despite RvP offensive heroics now almost every game, I still feel Song is our most important man.
Denilson was our best midfielder against Barca last time, so I wouldn’t be so dismissive of him. Song and Diaby were both found lacking in their passing that time. Song this season, though, has improved a lot in his passing and link up play, and he is very much in-form, so he gets the start hands down.
This first XI (except nasri) has been playing extremely well and we need to play with these players against Barca.
kind of agree waleed. i know he was one of the decent players on the pitch with interceptions, that’s what he’s known for.
and to be honest i don’t really remember the specifics of those two legs when it comes to denilson.
but the entire team needs to press, i don’t think i’ve ever seen denilson violently press throughout an entire match.
@Anil im pretty sure Song is faster than Denilson…
Even if Song is not faster than Denilson in a foot race, he certainly is more aggressive pursuing to get the ball back, no matter who loses it, and Denilson is much more likely to give it up on a challenge.
Doesn’t make him a bad person, but Song is definitely tougher and we need that toughness more than anything.
on the other hand, against Barca, the whole team needs to press collectively, follow the man and not the ball. can’t just leave it to the “DMs”.
denilson will be vital against barca, that’s for sure. It’s a game of technicality not physicality.
we had a good game today even though we are bit slow in our pace but im happy with the overall result.also i m happy for van persie this prove on each game that he is a world class striker 10 goals in 5 games let s hope he will put a better performance against barca.van persie is on 10 goals now not 9 you mentioned……moreso wenger said nasri also have a chance of playing let s hope he s fully fit…gunner 4 life
I think if nasri is fit he has to start
Because the key to beating barca
Is to keep the ball ,nasri style of play
Would help us .
Have in said that i have been watching
Baca this season and thay can be
Beat most of us are over hipeing there
Players, all there players can be mark
Except messi .
Messi needs to have a bad game for us
To win , i was watching him last week
And was craking up this guy looks like
He was playing fifa 11 on ameauter.
Around this period last season we were struggling to beat teams like Hull. Historically, we have struggled during the Feb – March period. The main reason being injuries. This season thanks to a full squad we are performing well. I’m still worried about Van Persie’s knee. I hope he is alright. Just goes to show what a great striker like Van Persie can do. I don’t remember the last time Van Persie was fit during the Feb – March period with Arsenal still in the title race.
Jack Wilshere was scintillating to say the least. Wonderful creativity! JD is a monster at the back. I’d say he is as good if not better than Vidic.
Just a word about Mick McCarthy. He is a hard man but very honest. This is what he said about Arsenal after the match
“There was a murder going on there and we could do nothing about it,”
“They’ve murdered us. All over the park from one to 11 they were better than us, stronger than us, quicker than us, passed it better than us.
“I don’t want to get beaten but I have to admire the way they play and the class they have.”
I can’t stand some of those other Managers. David Moyes, Twitchy, Alex McLeish………….
At least he didn’t come up with lousy excuses like those other managers. Good on ya Mick!
Comlpetely agree.
A refreshing change from the likes of David Moyes and co. who try to defelect from their team’s failures and put the blame on us for no reason at all.
well done today arsenal good win! and well done to ryo miachi for his first goal in holland! have to say i watched the game and hes a real fans favourite. all the fans were chanting ryo! ryo! and at the end they all stood up at gave him an applause! he then bowd to all the fans and he looks really good and miture cant wait for him to join arsenal!
Thanks for the info gooner92! It’s really difficult to follow all the Arsenal loanees, even the new singings, so all this kind of information on quality blogs is great value.
i know this is gonna sign crazy gooner92…but i think ryo was the biggest arsenal star of the day…even ahead of RVP and wilshere…man of the match in his debut game…and absolutely composed goal for an 18 year old…moves like cristiano ronaldo on the wing…can’t wait for the left stands at the emirates to chant “ryo ryo ryo” and the right stands to chant “theo theo theo” for the coming years…arsene wenger has found a HELL of a star…i haven’t been this excited for a player since he bought nasri
Emirates, is always quiet. I think all the people analyze games very seriously.
Yet the outcome is,buy this guy, or that.
Great performance today by the team. Just need to be more clinical in front of goal. Looking forward to Barca this week. Nice to play them at nearly full strength.
hey i didnt see the game so i dont know much abt how everyone played..so did Arshavin have a good game? did he look like hes getting back to his old form? an answer from anyone would be really appreciated=]
Arshavin’s doing better but he needs a bit of luck to go his way before he can get back to his “old form.” But it was a good performance considering he was in Iran just a few days ago and played 90 minutes.
Recently he was guilty of over-elaboration. If he keeps it simple he does well.
I couldn’t pick a MOTM because three players were equally outstanding.
1. wilshere
2. RVP
3. Arshavin
Arshavin was sharp, dangerous, and worked very hard both ways. No frustrating moments from him at all.
This has become my favored blog to visit because of sheer quality and insight by both the blogger and the responders. Keep it up friends!
It seems that more and more true gunners are joining this blog and this is really nice. I hate it when a horrible blog like “le grove” gets hundreds of comments (one more idiotic than the other) and an intelligent and insightful blogger like Desi is visited by so few people.
Btw, great game today, DJ and RvP my MotM.
i think you’ll find that the same people at le grove are the same people who frequent night clubs to get their fuck on.
no, they are the ones who try, yet fail miserably.
(first time posting, but long time reader. keeup up the good work, desi).
haha completely true. i don’t know how my assessment was that bad
most of them are indeed losers. maybe that’s a strong word, i don’t want to be an absolute dick, but they all seem a bit off.
i’ll just change the end to “and hope to get their fuck on”
thanks for the input my dude
and of course i have many friends like this
just a casual observation (and i thought quite humorous) hope no-one took offense.
intelligent people do consistently visit your blog though desi, even if i’m not one of them. you should be very proud.
Glad you were able to reflect and review your thoughts Nasri; speaks well of you, but I do find the Le Grove blog infuriating, just the headlines tizzes me off. Our best response is to ignore them and not visit the site.
great blog as usual. I come here every week for the review.. though I never really post. Glad to see Arsenal performing at such a high level. Let’s keep it going through wednesday… and Destroy Barcelona the way we can!
Jack was great today, so was RVP, Walcott was a threat, Djourou-Kos… Song great in defense… with him playing DM.. we have literally 5 defenders sometimes on the line. I looked at it today and we had 2 perfectly straight lines.. 5 in defense and 4 above them which awaiting a throw-in by wolves. Its something we’ve really not had for a while.. that defensive mentality to stop the opposition from taking shots at our goal..
The lad Jack played quite well today. Some brilliant passes from him. His defensive work can only improve, he was knackered by around 70min!
Song was carrying an injury. I hope after the Barca game Arsene gives him a good rest.
We need Denilson to step up, take Song’s place so that we are not lacking in that area. 2 games on the trot will give Denilson enough confidence and sharpness.
Chamakh and Bendtner were looking hungry when they came on. I think those two are due some goals.
But Walcott was my MOTM. He was incisive, excellent ball control, astute positioning…if there is any member of the team Barca can’t handle,it’s Walcott.
Pep admitted that Walcott caused them nightmares. I think he is due a couple of goals soon Walcott.
I fancy Walcott up against Pique.
Our defence is better than last year. I think Messi will struggle against us.
If Wilshere plays, can he face Iniesta and Xavi? Would Rosicky be a better option? Defensively, I think Rosicky and Denilson have an edge over Wilshere.
Who knows eh?
Perhaps playing Diaby (can he play?) and Song may be a better option defensively.
This is our strongest XI right now (missing Nasri, but AA23 is a capable replacement) so I wont tweak the chemistry much.
I even go as far as not breaking up Kozzer + JD pairing at the back even if TV5 is back this season .. Maybe to bench.. but straight into the first team. No.
Well, kind of true reg DJ-Koz partnership. I wont want to break the understanding they have developed between them. Especially for any ball Koz is attacking, Djourou seems to know what Koz will do for that ball and covers for him. Could see that time and again in last match.
Putting TV5 straight back into Koz place was a nobrainer until last month. But not anymore.. Realistically, TV5 can start challenge for a place only mid-April when he would have got fit completely. But if this current CB pairing keeps clean sheet after clean sheet, then there is no way in for TV5.. alteast for this season. May be next season, he will get picked ahead of Koz.
Having said that, in an ideal situation, I think DJ-TV CB pairing will be the most solid one for us.
Amazing thing is, If at all there is a CB place open for competition then its only the Koz place. DJ’s place is completely owned by him. He simply looks irreplaceable at the moment.
Totally agree. TV will have to bench it unless Wenger decides to play 3 at the back.
Last year against Barca we had Song playing central defence. These games against Barca are Arsenal’s to win.
Play tv5 as defensive mid on the left that would be awesome. Only thing that pushes Jack to the bench. Would be interesting option though.
your assessments of all the players are spot on.
Arshavin was great, and that’s encouraging heading into the Barca match.
We need to go up another level still though.
they still missed too many goal attempts. They find it hard to finish
What a party pooper. Dude go visit Le Shit or some place like that and you’ll have lots of friends nit picking about Arsenal.
I guess you are the type they call “tight ass”.
The Gunners have conceded a goal every 251 minutes of PL football with Johan Djourou in the side this season. Without him, they have conceded a goal every 54 minutes.”
This stat was before yesterday’s game.JD is immense as you rightly pointed out and we will need him at the top of his game again against Barca.
Its nice to see that for the first time in recent seasons we now have a settled first eleven and we are ripping the benefits.
The comment by Mick McMacarthy said it all about the match especially with his record of nutty comments against us but, we should always try and convert most of our chances.
Although, Barca are favourites for the CL match but, people seem to have forgotten that we were ravaged by injuries and half fit players last season in the same match. We don’t have anything to lose but, it would be a close match.
Desi,
I would love to know how you think we are/could beat Barca???
Personally I think Walcott is the key, because Barca plays very high.
Walcott alone is not the key. Even without Walcott we beat them. We just need all our players in their top form. The reasons are just two.
One, we need to create and take our chances well.
Two, no silly mistakes as Barca can punish for every loose ball we give away. In fact, a mistake against Barca is not just giving away loose ball but also giving away too much space and time for their players.
I personally will start our first eleven as such and then bring Bentdner and Chahmak later on. Height is also a key against them. If we couldnt break them in one way, we need to take a different route to break them.
true!!!
one of the best performances from us all season. we wonder if this is the same wolves side that beat man united, chelsea and pool, but thats what home and away matches are in football. and thats why we’ve sent the ugly playing cunts back to the bottom of the table. but take nothing away from our boys. intelligence all around the pitch when we had the ball and patience when we didn’t. wolves having no shots on goal says how much defensive burden is eased if we can keep the pressure in the opposition’s third for most of the game. not to discount the performance of our back 4. they did what was required of them and kept it simple. van Persie was immense. nice finishes for the goal, sharp movement and nice link up play. Jack was neat on the ball and clever off it. It’ll be interesting to see how he performs against Xavi and Busquets in midfield. Arshavin wasn’t at his best, but was unselfish and sharper than the past few months. all in all, a great team performance. looking forward to welcoming Barca to the Emirates.
If only Sagna could play… We are giving Barca too much respect. We match them in every position. Walcott will be as dangerous to them as Messi is to us. Van Persie will easily match their stirker. Nasri/Arshavin are as good as any left winger in the world. Cesc will match Xavi. Jack is in the form of his life but Denilson is also suited to this game. Song over Mascherano. Our Center backs are as good as theirs. Our keeper is better than theirs. Imo the game will be one or lost by both sets of full backs. Clichy will have a hard time against Messi especially with Arshavin on his wing. Eboue will need the defensive game of his life. Alves will need to be contained. Whoever they decide to put in left back will need to be dominated by Walcott.
one or lost… ‘won’
hi Phil, while i largely with your assessment, the thing about this Barca team is the teamwork, on top of the great individual players.
so other than comparing man for man, we need a system that beats theirs as well.
i say we have to press them hard within our half, together with unleashing Theo against their high line.
This blog is one of my top 5 Arsenal blogs, always make sure i read desi insightfull analysis on all things Arsenal, keep up the great work Desi rather listen to you then the gutter english press.
Keep the faith.
Good game. There were anxious moments in the second half but the players dealt with it really well. We got to saw the defensive possession Desi was talking about.
The best part was that after worrying ourselves with injuries for a week we got to see the same team with Song in it. People already were devising formations with 3 defenders(to avoid Squillaci).
Commentators talked on about the second goal, in the entire second half. Perhaps they wanted it ruled off-side, and see Wolves equalize. Wolves played fair, Henry especially.
By the way, man city bottled it yesterday. And what is manu without luck, deflected cross! The same happened to us.
Buy some more players, you are on your way.
great blog desi, i’m a big fan. Any chance you’ll be joining twitter soon?
Arsenal First goal was Awesome. Assist by Fantastic Fabregas( Left Foot) and Goal scored by RVP( right Leg) spot the difference?!!!!
