Just How Pathetic Have Arsenal Been This Season?!

A lot of people were frustrated and riled (choose your favourite adjectives) over the result at Ipswich. I can understand it because that’s just how I felt. Even though I try to ensure I don’t have unrealistic expectations there are times when it’s difficult to accept a performance. Wednesday night was a classic example.

But I find it equally difficult to accept the reaction of some fans. In fact, it’s unbearable. Judging by what I’ve been reading recently, it seems Arsenal have been absolutely pathetic this season. Half the squad is no good, some that are good enough don’t have the right mentality, the manager is clueless, and such other extreme opinions have been gaining strength. Not surprising given a home draw and an away loss against Championship sides in the last two games.

I thought it might be interesting to see how the top English teams have done this season. Here is a combined table for performances in all competitions for the top five clubs.

Immediately upon making that table, I realised these fans are geniuses. Arsenal have been an absolute shambles. My sincere apologies to every doom monger for genuinely believing in this team. How very naive of me!

The most obvious observation is that they haven’t won all their matches. We should not care that City and the Spuds have won 50 percent or less of their games or that Chelsea have a lower winning percentage than Arsenal. A club like Arsenal should be winning all their games.

Arsenal’s poor win record comes from the fact that there are no 20 goal strikers at the club, Arshavin is useless and doesn’t care, Cesc wants to be at Barca, there are no real wingers, no one can put a decent cross, and no one really wants to shoot at goal. The fact that Arsenal have scored 11 goals more than the next best just shows that we can do anything with statistics.

The central defenders are completely useless and this can be seen from the goals conceded. Arsenal are conceding 1 goal a game whereas United and Chelsea only concede 0.93! The Tiny Totts have been so good this season. They’re only conceding 1.38 goals per game. What a mistake it was to let Gallas leave. Arsene should learn from ‘Arry and buy English defenders like Dawson.

The best proof that Wenger must spend can be clearly seen from the performances of Man City. Their defensive record is even better than that of United and Chelsea!! And they’ve only lost 6 games compared to Arsenal’s 8. That’s 25 percent less losses than Arsenal. How’s that for a stat?! It doesn’t matter that they drew with Leicester City in the FA Cup or lost to a team like Lech Poznan in the Europa League.

Their loss against Arsenal at home was clearly an aberration. We all saw how great City were at the Emirates. They showed the value of buying proven central defenders and defensive midfielders. They also exposed all of Arsenal’s attacking weaknesses that I mentioned above.

Considering these facts I think it’s only fair that the fans are not getting behind the players when they’ve struggled for form. I mean why should a fan cheer someone like Arshavin who is making big bucks and not delivering. Just look at someone like Bale, now that’s a guy who should be cheered. He’s got 7 goals and 3 assists in the League at a rate of a goal or assist every 185 minutes. Just because Arshavin has 4 goals and 9 assists at a rate of a goal or assist every 108 minutes doesn’t mean he’s actually done well. Stats can even show that Arshavin’s overall contribution is better than Nasri’s who’s got a goal or assist in the League every 139 minutes. We all know that’s rubbish! Arsenal win because Nasri has been phenomenal and struggle because Arshavin has been useless.

We can all see he’s lazy and underperforming. It’s his job to lift the fans out of their miserable lives by winning matches and scoring wonder goals. It’s preposterous to suggest that fans should get behind the team or an out of form player when they’re not doing well.

I used to think Arsenal have a great squad and they’re trying hard. I think I was confused because Arsenal are the only team who are still in all four competitions. But based on the ‘facts’ discussed in this article, I’m beginning to change my mind. I’m sure there are a lot more observations that prove how wretched Arsenal have been this season. Please feel free to share your favourites.

PS: I hope I don’t have to explain this article.

  1. Jekyll says:

    Not pathetic. Just horribly inconsistent.

Wenger will admire (or is he funding?) your efforts however – stats are all. What an apologist. We are 4 points behind Man U and they have a game in hand. We just lost to Ipswich. Deal with the facts in hand. Your sarcasm is pathetic.

Do you really think Arshavin is having a better season than Bale??? Only if you have no feel for the game and its psychology and nuances and influences.

    • desigunner says:

And United have to go to Chelsea, Liverpool and Arsenal and have to play City at home. Nuances?

We just lost to Ipswich who beat West Brom who beat City in that competition. Chelsea and United are already out of this competition. Nuances?

Do you think Bale is having a better season than Arshavin? Do you actually watch the games or just get carried away by the hype? Tottenham haven’t won more than Arsenal, they haven’t scored more than arsenal, they’ve less points than arsenal, what nuances and influences are you talking about?

Perhaps you need to know the facts before dealing with them? Anyway I’m done responding to ignorance.

      • MSL says:

I guess Jekyll is trying to point out the inconsistency in performances against Ipswich. The biggest grief I have is that we manage botch up when we need to be putting things to the sword like Braga, Tottenham game, Ipswich and Leeds games. Arsenal do the disappearing act at the worst possible juncture. Hasn’t it been happening too many to be a coincidence?

      • durban_gun says:

well said desi dont bother wasting ur time explaining yourself to morons who have pig shit for grey matter , personally i have been dissapointed with the squad this season for one reason only..which is we lost games at home which if we applied ourselves we would have won comfortably and could have easily been 3+ points clear at the top, secondly i feel our second string team is not putting in proper shifts , their quality and ability is obvious 2 seasons ago i thought denilson was one of our best players when wenger thru him and song in the deep end by promoting dem to the first team without replacing flamini.our biggest problem is not wenger or hes transfer policy , our problem is not having players who want to play for the club and players sulking for game time ,rather give me someone like kuyt who even though is not the most technically gifted player yet he always puts in a good shift with hes never die attitude , we need winners in our squad if we are to compete not a new manager or new striker, jus players who wanna win things with this club like cesc song van persie nasri djourou vermaelen .

      • Phv says:

Just because Crouch,Defoe,Pavlyuchenko and Keane are not good enough to score the chances he has presented them, it does not mean Bale is having a worse season than Arshavin. He brings energy to his team.He drives them forward. If he had better team mates, he would have done better. If he was playing alongside the Arsenal players instead of arshavin, he would have probably done better(more assists and goals). Bale tracks back and actually helps the team not concede a goal while Arshavin does not.You have to take it into consideration as well.It is not all about attack.

      • johnny says:

I understand from Jekyll and Phv that Bale is a LOT better than Andrey, although his stats are worse, because the other Spuds players, especially the strikers, are worse than ours.
I can’t stop myself from laughing. Maybe, just maybe, you should think that Bale looks a lot better than he really is because he’s in a team with bad players. He’s not colleague with Cesc, Nasri, RvP, his coleagues are Gallas, Pav, Crouch (lol), Defoe, etc. Of course he looks like Maradona compared to those muppets…
Anyway, at least it’s a good thing that you accept the fact that Bendy and Chamakh are better than Pav, Crouch and co…

    • jcloud says:

What sort of inconsistency are you talking about?? When you play 6 games in a space of 2 weeks and play Chelsea, Man City, Birmingham away and Wigan away! We didn’t lose anything, we just gave them a little advantage before they come to the Emirates and will be smashed.

      • veskovp says:

It is kind of true , Arsenal had the toughest program in the Christmas period, Chelsea, Man C , away to Wigan and Birmingham , then two clubs from the NPower League that play weak teams week in and out so they could put everything for 90 mins. Look at Man u program , Desin forgot to mentione the away game at Totenham , so in 4 weeks we might be equal in points again. We still have a good chance at Leeds and Ipswich games and very easy string of PL games. What worries me ,and this has been proven many times before, that team that play in many cups at the end gets burnt and take not more than one or two cups and these are the less prestigious ones and earlier finals , like the League Cup when they are still fresh ,I hope I am wrong .

  2. Brian says:

Desi, I usually agree with you and think your blog is one of the best. Today I think you’re stretching the stats to support a point of view. Arsenal is a top club and needs to help to the highest standards. The likes of Bendtner, Arshavin, Denilson, and Eboue would not get into any of the top sides with their performances this season. Arshavin is class on his day but his effort leaves much to be desired. What separates Arsenal and the ManUres, Barca’s, Inter of last year is effort, consistency and a winners mentality. Sometimes you have to trust your eyes and leave the stats alone. You rarely if ever hear people question the effort of Messi, Ronaldo, Xavi, or any other world class player. Is it too much to ask for players to be committed between the white lines?

    • desigunner says:

      Brian,

Firstly, thanks for showing that someone can disagree without being disrespectful.

I agree Arsenal needs the highest standards and some of the performances have not been up to the mark. I’m not trying to say Arsenal have been perfect. If you’ve read my articles this season perhaps you’ll agree I don’t shy away from criticism of the team or the manager.

I do however, strongly feel that the degree of criticism, especially recently, has been too high and is not proportional to the performances.

I strongly feel the fans can lift the team when they’re down. If the players put in two bad games and fans cheer them all through the third one they’ll undoubtedly lift their performances.

Now let’s look at the names you’ve mentioned. Denilson – Can you tell me who Barcelona’s, United’s, or Chelsea’s 6th choice central midfielder is? Eboue – Paulo Ferierra comes to mind, Gary Neville as well, Who is Barcelona’s second choice right back? Surely you can see the point here. Should we really compare these players with the best ones at the other clubs?

I agree Arshavin has not been as consistent as we’d like. But does it help in any way if the fans get on his back? Aren’t many people talking about him as if he’s done sweet FA all season? Is that fair by any stretch?

      • arsene wenger says:

theone thing i will say about the recent criticism, its now the business end of the season, andwehave drawn against leeds, and been beaten by ipswich, how easy do we want it?

      • Tiarnan says:

FORGET about every other team in the world for a minute.

Compare Arsenal to 6 years ago in terms of the players (skill and physical prowess) and the tactics.

Then ask yourself are we going forwards or backwards.

Denilson, Eboue & Bendtner are 3 of the worst players Ive ever seen play for Arsenal and would be in the top 5 alonside Stepanovs and Cygan.

Do you think its acceptable that Denilson when tracking back just sometimes stops running after the player? I think its even more acceptable that Wenger continues to play him.

In the first half of the season only a few teams had our tactics figured out.

They knew by defending deep, giving us loads of posession and then hitting us when our full backs attack theyd more than likely beat us.

In the last few games everyones done it to us and look how impotent we’ve become.

This isn’t complacency or naivety, its BAD MANAGEMENT.

I actually love Wenger but I love the club more and therefore I have to be brutally honest – we will never win the Premiership (the MAIN trophy) again.

        In Arsene We Rust

      • Gooner from Sydney says:

Tiarnan you muppet I can’t wait till we win the premiership you spud loving loser.

        In Arsene We Trust

      • Mgooner says:

Tiarnan, if Arsenal somehow wins the CC this season, i can bet you ll still criticize Wenger. Saying this is just the Mickey Mouse cup. You are just another doom monger.

  3. Nick says:

Thank god someone actually agrees with me, we’ve not actually been as bad as people seem to think.
Ok, i know we’ve not always been great, especially in the last 2 games but were not out and still have a great chance to still be in 4 competitions(YES 4 COMPETITIONS PEOPLE!!!!) in a couple of weeks.
Also stats speek for themselves AA will be back to best soon enough and will be smashing that of the best player in the world…… BALE!! (yes i am joking people)

  4. Tiarnan says:

Thats exactly what Fergie asks for when he wants to see how his team are doing in the league. In fact I think he gets the Man Utd Ladies teams stats too and the under 18s and squashes them all together like a big meaningless pie.

Why dont you stop trying to polish turds, Arsenal are in serious decline. Wengers tactics have been utterly found out and our players are just not up to it.

How many times do you need to call a team naive, inexperienced or complacent before you realise theyre just not good enough?

    In Arsene We Rust

  5. HexyDre says:

Brilliant article…saying it exactly as it is!
I hope I don’t have to explain this comment :D

  6. Phv says:

Are you negative or you are the negative fans ? I don’t get it.Anyway, what is obvious is that this argument about ”Arsenal are the only team who are still in all four competitions” is completely wrong because we have no chance of winning the two most important ones(Premier League and Champions League). We will get eliminated by the best team in history Barcelona. We will finish third behind City and United. In FA Cup , anything can happen. We may even lose as soon as Wednesday at Leeds. The problem is that there are 5-6 players who are holding us back but after the huge disappointment of this season, I think Wenger will be ruthless with some of them.
Denilson adds nothing to attack and even slows down our attacks. We always struggle to score with him playing.Frimpong and Coquelin are way better than him. They have energy and don’t bring laziness and complacency during matches like he does. They will drive us forward from next season.Watching Coquelin play for Lorient is like watching Flamini in his best season for Arsenal. He runs like there is no tomorrow just like Gatusso. He will be a great addition. He has pace and power. Our tiki taka style requires a lot of work rate and Arshavin is simply not suited to it.We see that we are much better with Nasri and Walcott on the wings.I am sure Vela will help us more if given chance. The Mexican has work rate. When Ramsey is back to form, Rosicky will be gone in the summer.Bendtner is slow and has to leave.I think we will challenge from next season. There is no motivation and desire this season to do it. We have had countless number of poor performances this season.Sunderland away was poor even though it finished 1-1.We could barely make a single attack in that match.Braga and Shakhtar away.Spurs at home. Leeds , Ipswich …. Wigan away being a goal man and a man up with 10 min to go.Newcastle and West Brom at home. What about Man Utd at Old Trafford.Where is the running and fighting? There are just some serious problems and it is simply not good enough. We cant become champions. We blew it a long time ago. If you can’t pass well one day, at least run a lot to make up for it.That’s what Man Utd do and that’s why they are unbeaten. The players get paid 3-4 millions so if they have an off day at least show a lot of effort to make up for it.They don’t care. They get complacent.Rant over. The future is still bright but some fans will have given up on the club until the success has come. I don’t blame them.

  7. arsene wenger says:

your right desi i agree, but one thing, by turning in half hearted performances, we now have an unwanted replay against leeds which will be hostile and aggressive, and we will also have to play all the big guns v ipswich, also we have to play barcelona, is 100% effort too much to ask? but i agree we have not been that bad, but when we have been bad we have been embarrasingly bad

  8. Phv says:

Desi, tell me why do we always have like 65% possession and create 2 or 3 chances for 90 min and most likely we miss them all because we don’t have quality finishers.Explain to me this one problem, please. It seems like we often struggle against any team.We never have a comfortable lead 10 min before the end.We always pray that we don’t fuck up in the end because anything can happen in the final min.We never kill teams off and now even championship sides have found us out. They find it easy to defend against us.It is beyond a joke.

    • Jonathan says:

Fergie dreams of putting the ball in the net as much as we do, so your whole “creating only 2 or 3 chances” is absolute rubbish… We score the most goals. The only reason we struggle is because the fans keep saying there isnt a winning mentality… Well imagine this, if the fans dont think their team can close out the win of course a players are affected. the tension at the stadium and fans booing players does not help turn performances around… This is not a “what have you done for me lately” type of relationship, it should be a “im here through thick and thin… CUMMON ARSENAL!” type of Love. if you dont support the team, your dragging us down

  9. hjhhhh says:

    sarcasm at its finest.

  10. Raghugovind says:

I guess the extreme reaction from most fans is because they want our team to be neck to neck with United . They want to prove at the end of the season to the United and Chelsea supporters that Evra’s jibes against Arsenal were totally wrong . You see most fans defend Arsenal very passionately against the fans of other clubs . The fact we have not won a trophy in 5 years, some fans from other clubs ask how can u still support this club ? This year there is a very realistic chance we can break that drought and the yo-yo performances don’t help . If the performances at Birmingham and against Chelsea raise expectations and make them believe that we reached a step closer to being a great team from a good team , the performances against Wigan, Leeds and Ipswich make their expectations take a nose dive to the point where they wonder whether we will ever become a gr8 club . Also the fact that now we are nearing the business end of the season these performances don’t help . I guess we will improve as the season goes on and I just hope the crux of our first team remains fit for the remainder of the season . Then there will definitely be a trophy in the cabinet that has been accumulating dust for the past 5 years .

  11. devilish_ht says:

Hahahahaha .. It’s so funny . The fan who give up before the season is over ( the dead-sure Arsenal-will-never-win anything fans ) are complaining about players giving up and being mentally weak . Talking about mental strength ..hahaha

  12. arsenalMonkey says:

Is Tiarnan George graham in discise? I think all real arsenal fans realise that for Arsenal to build a 300M stadium without sinking the club into a spiral of dept is a amassive acheivement. It has meant however that the club has nit and is not able to spend millions on running 2 squads of superstars so that we can win every game of every competion in the universe, some thing alot of people seem to not understand is great players these days demand higher wages, than the clubs ever pay in transfer fees. Eboe, Denilson, Bentner etc provide exellent value and cover for the first team without us breaking the bank and wi eventually be sold to pay of the stadium to be followed in by the next crop of youngsters-eventually we will strike it lucky and 2-3 players of wilshires capacity will come through at once, if you follow the youth and reserves( and I mean follow the development of the players not just results and stats) I think you will be as confident as i am that Arsenal are fastest developing football super club in the world. Tiarnin, the premiership is a harsher place then 11 years ago, when man u and arsenal could dominate the leaugue with a squad of 10 good players and a super striker. Wenger is football gold, imagine if arsenal had never signed/ backed him; and had brought on the likes of houllier, gullet, keegan, rafa, etc. Complaining about things when they are at the best they can be is pointless-look forward to the next game and back your team for doing so well with the limitations they have!

  13. Rash says:

Spot on DesiGunner. First time replying here, I always love reading your posts.

I hate when supporters turn against their own players like they did on Eboue and recently on Arshavin. Every player have form dip and it’s us, the fans need to lift them and the team by giving all our support. I’m more proud of our away supporters than home ones..sometimes it’s too quiet at Emirates..those people there are just coming to watch Arsenal win and that’s all..no support, nothing.

When there is no solid support from fans (although team is losing and having a bad run), then what can we expect from players?

Denilson, Eboue, Bendtner, Arshavin, Diaby are the 5 that we mention alot..but look at it, they are mostly 2nd team players, and they are good compared to other team’s 2nd string players. These guys are young (except Arshavin), they need our support and I got to say they will good one day. They lack desire, love and need to play more..the first 2 we can help them achieve by giving our full support.

Denilson, Diaby, Bendtner, Eboue – need more games to come good and in-form.

Arshavin – I think he is not happy playing as winger and in BPL…Wenger should play him where he can be dangerous the most – behind the striker.

    All we need is :

    1. Fan support – yes although team inconsistency

    2. Back-up for Song (Frimpong will be there soon)

    3. CB (experience CB)

    4. Loan a few players out – Vela, Denilson maybe..

    5. Bring in a few hungry youngsters – JET, Lansbury, Ramsey..and a few more.

Come on Arsenal, and all fans! Show your support!

My fav team line-up (the right balance) :

    Fabianski/Scezney

    Sagna — DJ — Kos — Clichy

    Song

    Walcott — Fabregas — Nasri

    Arshavin

    Van.P / Chamakh

    Or play 4-4-2

    Midfield : Rosicky – Song – Fab – Nasri

    Defence : Sagna – DJ – Kos – Clichy

    Strikers : Walcott/Arshavin + Van.P/Chamakh upfront.

    • Rash says:

What do you think about the line-up desi and guys?

    • Mgooner says:

That is what true fans should say. Spot on Rash! When you hear from supporters of lower clubs like Blackpool, they love their players and manager, even though its just Blackpool. Arsenal fans are too quick to get on the back of their team.

  14. Shashi says:

Excellent article And the best one I have read for a long time. I beg my fellow gooners to try and see things in perspective during the harder times like the past week. Getting emotional cannot possibly help or change future in a positive way, negativity is contaegous and we ought to try and be positive. I understand the frustration with some players but the only way we can get them to perform better than their ability is to get behind them when they put on the short, not get On their backs.

  15. Santori says:

Delightful read Desi. Especially enjoyed the sarcasm. Great compilation of stats for presumably all 4 competitions.

All the same, wouldn’t hurt to have a 20 goal a season striker anyway.

  16. GERALD says:

My respect to all the arsenal fans all of over the world that have stayed with the team over these years without trophy. I TOLD MY COUSIN THAT THAT BEST HUSBAND YOU CAN FIND ANY WHERE IS AN ARSENAL FAN. She asked my why. i TOLD HER A MAN THAT WILL TAKE ALL THE HEART BREAKS AND SHAME YOU CAN EVER GAVE TO HIM FOR 5 GOIN TO SIX YEARS AND STILL REMAIN FAITHUL, DEDICATED AND LOVING.I THEN SAID,SUCH A MAN IS WORTH BEING WITH AND GIVING YOUR BEST WHEN YOU REALIZE ALL THE PAIN YOU HAVE GIVEN TO HIM. I NOW ASK, DOES WENGER EVEN THINK OF THE PAINS HE GIVE TO FANS OR DOES HIS LOVE FOR THE BOOKS AND THE DIRECTORS BIGGER THAN THOSE THAT CONTRIBUTE TO THE SURVIVAL OF THE TEAM: THE FANS. YOU MAY ASK ME WHAT HAS HE DONE AGAIN, MY QUESTION WILL BE , WHAT HAS HE REFUSE TO DO. ABOVE YOU GUYS ARE COMPARING DENILSON, ARSHAVIN, VELA, WITH OTHER FIRST TEAM PLAYERS IN OTHER TEAMS AND LEAGUE. I ASK, WHAT HAVE DENILSON, ARSHAVIN, WALCOTT, WILSHERE, BENDTNER, EBOUE, AND OTHERS ADDED TO THE TEAM APART FROM PASSIN THE BALL AROUND. LOOK AT KEITA, PEDRO, JUAFREN, IN BARCE, ARE THEY FAIRST TEAM PLAYERS. OR WHAT IS REALLY THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN BERCELONA AND ARSENAL. MY ANSWER IS SIMPLY THE PLAYERS WE HAVE. BUT WE HAVE NASRI AND THEY HAVE INIESTA, WE HAVE FAB THEY HAVE XAVI, WE HAVE SONG THAT SCORE GOALS THE HAVE BASQUET, WE HAVE VAN PERSIE THE HAVE VILLA, WE HAVE WALCOTT THEY HAVE MESSI. AM NOT TRYIN TO COMPARE THESE PLAYERS BUT THE GIVE THE SAME THING THESE PLAYERS GIVE TO THEIR TEAM AS OUR OWN PLAYERS. THEN WHAT IS THE PROBLEM, WHY ARE WE NOT SCORING GOALS THAT WIN MATCHES, AND PUT FEAR ON THE NEXT OPPONENT. WENGER HAS TO EITHER CHANGE STYLE OR GET PLAYERS THAT ARE EFFECTIVE, THAT CAN WIN MATCHES. ONE MAY SAY IT TOOK BERCA YEARS TO BUILD THEIR TEAM AND I ASK DID IT TAKE THEM MORE THAN 6 YEARS. OUR ONLY CREAL CHANCE AT HAND TO WIN A TROPHY IS 90 MINS AWAY AND U ARE STILL COMPLAININ ABOUT RUGBY ASK FAB. PLS WENGER SHOULD WIN CONVINCINGLY AT HOME AGAINST ISPWISH OR SHOULD JUST BE A TECHNICAL MEMBER OF THE TEAM. IF AM TO SAY PLAYERS LIKE EBOUE, DENILSON, ARSHAVIN, BENDTNER SHOULD BE OFFLOADED AND WINNING PLAYERS LIKE HAZARD, SUAREZ, TIOTE, VAN DIAL, SHOULD BE BROUGH IN. THANKS AND I WISH THEM THE BEST THIS WEEKEND

Then they blame players mentalities and lack of confidence. SHHEEEEESH..

GROW UP… seriously some fans have been disgusting for the past 3 years and it’s getting too much.

  19. Skid says:

Maybe at the end of the season we should hang your stats up in the trophy cabinet ! Your stats mean nothing. You cannot be happy with what you’ve seen this season. After 5 years this is where we should be kicking on. Chelsea, Man U and Pool are weaker than previous seasons and City are a season or two away from having a real good go at it. Trust the Arse to be going backwards at the time when we should be literally walking this league. ThIs season has been blighted with poor performances and dropped points. Pool, Sunderland, WBA, Newcastle, Braga, Shakatar, Spuds, Man U, Wigan, Leeds and now Ipswich ! In any other season we would be out of the title race already ! The thing is there has been good performances sprinkled in there Blackburn, Everton, City and Chelsea, where’s the consistency Arsene !

Don’t even get me started on the lack of quality signings and the shitty attitude of the players. You can’t tell me we can’t afford to buy one or two good quality signings rather than buying in the bargain basement ! The latest link is Matthew Upson for Christ’s sake I hope not !

The tide is turning over at The Emirates whether people like it or not and at the end of the day AW has only himself to blame !

  20. elliot says:

Arsenal’s pathetic showing goes down to their manager. He overrates his under achieving pl;ayers to such an extent that he doesnt see the need to sign new players. The defeat at Ipswich has clearly exposed the lack of depth at Arsenal. Wenger blames fatigue for the defeat which means he is using using the same players over and over. There are players like Santa Cruz, Wright philips,Shay Given and Suarez who could easily fit into Arsenal, but Wenger will not buy. An injury to Fabianski will teach Wenger a lesson. I once admired Wenger but I think I am now beginning to hate him.

    • Miranda says:

‘An injury to Fabianski will teach Wenger a lesson’?

Personally, though I believe we owe Fabianski our support, I can’t help being delighted whenever he’s injured and Szczensny gets a game. Or do you mean the more Wenger sees of Szczesny, both his quality and his improvement with experience, the more likely he is to learn the lesson that we’ve got one of the best young keepers in Europe?

  21. Armory says:

Good writeup desi. What really gets to me is the is when fans are having a go at the players when things go wrong. When we play badly and keep on doing the same mistakes atime and again year after year the fault lies with the manager who has all the oppertunities to deal with the problems but does not do so. The fans favorite scapegoats Denilson Eboue Almunia AA etc etc dont pick them selfs Wenger does and has been doing for years. I can see were you are coming from with the stats but we would be in such a lot better position if the problems had been delt with by Wenger instead of letting them fester. I have lost count on how many of the goals conceded have been balls over the top or from a set piece, our old old problems that are and will remain with us because they are not delt with Can you imagine where we would be with this gifted group of induviduals if they were proberly set up? we would be out of sight in all the domestic competitions.

  22. crazy gunner says:

I love your blog Desi not just this one because you always seem to make sense even when you are being sarcastic

I am not going to bang on about what has already been said here but what I can’t understand is why we seem to have no energy or drive. Is it lack of desir?e or drive? loss of form? or confidence?. I was watching Barca and RM yesterday and the night before and I am left wondering if Skysports are trying to make us look bad by speeding up the tape with RM and Barca …

Tbh I don’t care about the CL anymore I just hope we don’t get a hiding becos that will just end our season in all competitions.

I had taken the CC for granted tbh if we don’t win it I really feel it would seriously damage the rest of our season! Damn it how did we get here…

  23. joeduke says:

i don’t think our season is lost. Man u rested about 6 ( if i am correct) players in their team and got hammered 4-0 by west ham who were bottom of d league. 4 those asking wat denilson brings to d game i will say gud simple passing n a gud long range shot. Arshavin will definitely come back 2 his, i just it happens soon. But right now i dont tink he shud start a match any longer…maybe just a few substitute appearances. However i am sad to say this as an african but shud neva play as a RB or LB again cos evry team knows he is d weak link in defense. I tink he plays beta as a winger.

  24. LondonGunner says:

Desi this is one of thr best article I ve read for ages, remember “AW out brigade” are usually clueless about the game. Thanks you cheered me up this morning.

  25. soulrebel says:

Hats off to Desi for standing up amongst the D&G bullshit all over the web.

Some fans and blogs genuinely think we are in crisis. Ask 99% of football fans round the world if Arsenal are in crisis and see what response you get.

We are absolutely set for a superb long future, near future and perhaps present as well.

Your sarcasm directed at the likes of Man.C and the other top 5 teams is spot on.

Fans need to grow up and stop crying like little brats about the lack of trophies in the past few years. They are coming…as if thats all that matters anyway…

    Keep it up Desi.

  26. w12mcee says:

the other day i was on newsnow and thought i’d take an opportunity to click on chelsea and have a laugh due to their current form. i thought i’d see a bunch of down and out ‘end of the world’ articles to giggle at. turned out that i had hard time finding what i was looking for, so i thought, Liverpool! they will be in the dumps and should have some pathetic discussions and dissagreements goin on about their situation. but once again it wasnt as bad as i thought. Now if a chelsea or liverpool fan clicked on our blogs and reads the comments they would be getting the type of laugh to make themselves feel alot better. sure you get my point by now, we’ve got the bitchiest support!

    • w12mcee says:

go on! some idiot who’s never had a fist fight should be calling me a moron. or some fat geezer tell i know nothing about football.

      • Skid says:

You’re not a moron mate you’re entitled to your opinion. I don’t give a toss what happens elsewhere though it’s the Arse that counts ! I won’t recount my earlier post but if you have the time check it out, can’t see that you would be able to disagree with what I’ve written though if your so knowledgeable about the game.

      • Northlondongooner says:

        Moron

  27. John says:

I think the following back up players have proved with there terrible performances that they will not push the first team players for a spot in the team and therefore should be sold. Arsenal have done well this season the fans frusration lies in the fact we know you can do better but carry this dead wood which drag the team down.

Wenger has to sell Denilson, Eboune, Vela, Squallaz, Bendtner and Arshivan I wont estimate what could be got.

He needs to buy Piennar (in Jan not waiting till June) to replace Arshivan much better team player and would give Clichy the support he needs on the left and a centre half preferably right sided. I’m thinking Richards of City who can play right back or centre half as this would provide cover for Sagna other options would be Mexes Roma and Santon of Inter.

    1st Team

    Fab
    Sagna, Mexes/Richards Djourou Clichy
    Song Wilshere
    Narsi Piennar
    Fab
    V Persie

    2nd

    Sczcnsey

    Santon Kozzer Vermnalen Gibbs
    Frimpong Ramsey/Diaby
    Walcott/Jet Rosicky
    Chamakh

Thats a squad taht could win the PL ps real lack of options in possible centre halfs out there.

  28. w12mcee says:

van p and nasri are just getting started. same for cesc. A.A can only get better! these are some of the best footballers on earth and they play for Arsenal. stop bitching.

  29. w12mcee says:

a big squad is needed, and keeping fringe players happy and confident isnt easy. swapping all our eboue’s and denilsons for eden hazard’s and supermen doesnt necessarily bring good things. lets just chill till we play a couple league games and win our old ‘on and off’ fans back

  30. Arsenal4 says:

Here’s the thing …. 2 games of completely bad performance .. steam out the frustration and jog on … Man U had that, Chelsea had that, even mighty Madrid and Barca had that …
let’s hope by Jan 25 this 2 games will be meaningless anyway … i happened to accept that there’s always be a part of fans that a little bit extreme in the negative side (in my opinion an A hole, and it’s OK for them if they think the same about me for having a different thinking) .. in the big picture we’re still have a big chance in 4 titles charges wiht some improvement of cover in CB due to the injuries and DM due to i’m now convinced more than ever that Denilson is not a DM (not sure what else either) .. a good season so far .. with a little bit frustration here and there but not disaster as some small minded people might over exaggerated. Let’s just keep on believing will ya?

    • Skid says:

Good season so far ! Piss poor performances a plenty, players not putting a shift in, thinking turning up at a game is all that is needed to secure the points, no tactical awareness, poor use of substitutions, are you sure you’ve been paying attention ? Still in four competitions you got that part right. A replay at Elland Road, 0-1 down in the second semi, Barca home and away (if we had done the business in the group stages we wouldn’t have had to play them) if Man U win their game in hand we’re seven points behind them. No signs of consistency all season but you’re still looking on the bright side, good for you !

  31. 7masters says:

I have to admire those who have faith in Arsenal and Wenger. But be prepared for heartbreak cause despite obvious weakness Wenger would not buy defensive cover or a proven goal scorer at the end of all good works.

I think the writing is on the wall some players have let him down time and time again. Denilson, Bendtner,Eboue,Aluminia are the weakest link and causing problems for the team full stop. My advice is not to play them but try to find replacement and sell them. Andre Arshavin is going through rough patch and should be retained cause he is special. But he should not play now from start and only play when team is winning to build his shattered confidence.

Arsenal need to buy two defensive player plus a midfielder cause Song and Wiltshire are overworked. It obvious these team need small minor tweaks cause it been proven time and time again some players are not good and need to be sold. Vela should be given more game time and read riot act to stop partying lifestyle or sold.

I think Arsenal should seriously begin to look for new manager and possibly make him assistant to Wenger with Pat Rice retiring soon. It time we looked at future for someone to take the club to next level. I cannot blame Wenger but he has lost control of players influence,It seem they are not making any effort for him why? he has done his best for them and made sure they got good contract for it but yet nothing.

  32. 7masters says:

Also all these tweeting craze and constant media glare before you have won something is not good. Jack Wiltshire has been making noises yet he should zip up and get on with it. I understand it better for him than fighting in night club but cmon give us break and stop making outlandish comment about other teams….arrogance is a bad trait in human being no matter who it is,

  33. Krang says:

Spot on article, especially bout arshavin. Such a shame to bullie him considering he is producing goal attempts aswell as delivering. Get behind him, cos we need him to come back to his best. Foolish children playing FM calling for new squad additions, name dropping like 12 year olds. Diaby n arshavin have a body language like they are lazy but check the number of miles they run during games while performing world class acts that can change the course of any game. Keep up the good work! / biglove from sweden

  34. Joe says:

The premier league has just announced next season the league will be measured and awarded on stats! Brilliant
I would say the main frustration would be Arsenal who are quality ,are being held back by players of the above mentioned ilk.

Kind of like an Austin Martin with a skoda gearbox, it’s got the best of in all areas and the potential but is limited to it’s performance by a few parts not of the required standard. Not faulty parts just not up to scratch..

  35. Thomas says:

    WENGER OUT!!!!!!!!!!

  36. nicky says:

I think the time is coming when immense changes are needed at ArsenalFC.
1.A take-over by the Russian with a big war chest.
    2. Dein returns as Chairman.
    3.A New Manager.
4.Rebuilding the team from the defence, forward.

  37. Claver says:

    Are you crazy?

With Wenger out, we will lose at least £10m of profit per year from our income, £100m for 10yrs which Wenger is managing.

The new manager will want at least £20m to buy players every season to please the fans. That is a probable loss of £100m over 10yrs, like cars(excuse the comparison)…most players depreciate in value after being bought.

This is in part how ManUtd lost £700m, it is not all the Glazers fault as the deluded will say.

    My friend, Wenger Out?!

Rather, we need a new striker – I think – and a team of assistants to help Wenger.

Desi, I propose that we contribute our talents to analyse upcoming games a bit more vigourously. Because I think that our opponents are doing their homework, Mourinho style.

Tactically, on player per player analyses, Wenger cannot do it alone. Esp. with games coming up thick and fast.

This is why Wenger is getting caught short on the pitch. Two men cannot do it alone, especially when you consider the hours needed to examine tactics. Wenger is on the wrong-side of preparedness.

Not that he isn’t putting effort in, but that he needs trusted people to work with him on tactics. Younger chaps with a zeal for number crunching. Something Wenger understands.

I am offering my services :-).

    • Northlondongooner says:

The problem is wenger doesn’t do tactical analyse as mourinho does, as he’s more concerned with the way the arsenal play. I agree maybe we need a tactician to assist wenger in this area.

    • Miranda says:

      ‘most players depreciate in value’

True, but not so often when it’s Wenger who bought them – remember Anelka, to name just the most staggering example of his ability to buy cheap and sell very, very expensive. And I wonder how much Real will be paying for Ade. Bet he does brilliantly there for a season or two – he’s a massively talented player – only to throw it all away as he always does.

      • Claver says:

Totally. That’s why I said ‘most’.

Mmm…perhaps we ought to have slapped a ‘sell on clause’ on Adebayor?

    • Tiarnan says:

Claver you seem like the type of fella that always turns up at his bus stop on time with a back pack and dicky bowe.

      Good for you!!

  38. Claver says:

What I mean is this…if you have two Wengers, or three, watching videos, analysing opponents; in terms of raw data you will have the output of three Wengers. Rather than one. So you increase the chance of spotting a trend, particularly because people see things differently.

Quite frankly, after watching Leeds, ManCity, ManU, Sunderland and now Ipswich play what I consider essentially the same tactics. Unless Wenger changes something, the outcome is going to be the same at the end of the season. And it won’t be a trophy in the cabinet, unless Wenger changes something, does something quite dramatic…like sign a striker for £30m. La Revolution.

    • Miranda says:

I agree with you, but Wenger doesn’t do pragmatism or tactics. He never has and probably never will because it conflicts with his ‘we play our own beautiful game’ philosophy. Sure, a new assistant – Grimandi? – might make a difference but I don’t see it happening soon.

      • Claver says:

Actually, pragmatism is spending within your means AND investing at an opportune time.

Wenger understands fully the first part, we need to urge him to do the second.

To realise that with Arsenal on the verge of a great season, a popular move to lift the fans and boost team morale (did you see the fans gather for Ronaldinho?) is what is needed.

Sometimes the motivation is external not internal, that’s why GOD made roses! I mean imagine.

If Arsenal bought Torres, or Kaka(I keep dreming!). Sure, they may not score 20 in addition, but they will boost morale. And, I bet, ticket prices.

But who wouldn’t pay to watch an Arsenal team with El Capitan and Kaka?

  39. IndianGunner says:

Ha ha ha. Great one Desi. Just an advice. Don’t waste your breath trying to put perspective infront on some of these morons.
There is a saying in hindi which you might be aware of
    “Bhains ke aage been bajana”
Everybody talks about our second string being not good enough. Well f they don’t play games how will they click into form? by rubbing a magic lamp?
The only games we can try them out is the league and Fa cup. Even if we lost the first tie, if that helps the players get back into some form that would have served the purpose
We need all our players firing on all cylinders if we have to competitive in 4 competitions
Remember what happened last year. Too many injuries and the second string had trouble coping with it.
This year they should be much better since they are playing somewhat regularly.

  40. Tom says:

Best article I have read in ages!!

I have been losing faith in our so called ‘fans’. I have always supported Arsenal and all the players, no matter how much they pissed me off. I was pissed off at the Ipswich game, but I will still back ALL players to the end. As isn’t that what supporters should do? Support their team and players?

I think all the moaning fans, that demand trophies and players to be sold are not real fans. Either they don’t know football, are not real fans or play too many computer games.

My biggest pet hate is slagging off our own players, but then saying replace him with so and so. Yet they don’t seem to think for one second about real life stuff, does the player want to come to us, does his club want to sell him, do we have the money to buy him, is he actually any better?

I’ve seen many blogs asking for Cahill, Samba and even flipping Richard Dunne! Yes they are decent defenders, but I do not think for one minute that they are champions material. Surely the people that get paid to make these decisions know best?

I trust Arsene and I’ve seen what he’s done for our club, but these plastic fans are really ruining it for everyone. Constant moaning and slagging people off. If you want transfers galore, go support Man Shitty.

I believe we are close to winning something, as a fan, I’m hoping it’s this season. I am realistic enough to know that in sport, there’s only one winner and lots of losers, so it’s not the end of the world if we don’t win anything. I’ll still support Arsenal and all our players, whatever happens.

  41. SamirWalcott says:

Actually it may not be as bad as it seems. We are missing out on alot of our plus points this season.

1)Away Form: It is improved. It is way better than before. Just look at the teams we have beaten this season. From city to villa and everton and blackburn. On grounds that we have previously fallen into pieces. Best away form in the league and coolest part, we did it by attacking, unlike ManCity.

2)Beating Chelsea. No one would have thought we would beat them. They have Drogba a.k.a Arsenal’s nemesis. We beat them, resoundingly and also with style, loads of it.

3)We are still in 4 competitons. At this time last year, we were out of the FA cup losing 3-1 to Stoke and also out of the league cup. And this season, we are only at 1 pay 2.37 not to win a trophy compared to 4.8 last season.

4)Players stepping up. Samir Nasri of course. I think he is the best player in the premier league at the moment. He will win us something for sure. He is also not in jury prone. Walcott has also being very good as well this season at the right side. Song also must not be forgotten.

    5)Our midfield strength.
Cesc,Rosicky,Nasri,Arshavin,Walcott,Song,Diaby. Need I say more. Front line power. Chamakh, vpersie,Bendtner.

  42. SamirWalcott says:

    Regarding weak players
Denilson:Nah this guy is absoulute shit, just let him go
Koscielny:This guy has a future for sure and if he is focused, he is world class
Shava:Never let this guy go. He is good and stats wise he can perform and he is world class on his day

    • Tom says:

Don’t agree with Denilson being shite. He’s a decent player, no world beater, but someone who can come in and do a job, he’s good enough. I can’t think of many 5th choice midfielders that are better. As Fabregas, Wilshire, Song etc ahead of him.

      • Samirwalcott says:

But he’s really not Arsenal quality like how he screwed against Leeds and Ipswich. And like u said (5th choice)

  43. richie says:

Sir I salute you! After reading your analysis of the Everton game. This is only the second thing I’ve read on your blog. Its nothing short of Brilliant! Its an absolute joy to come across a proper supporter with a brain. However do the pundits get their jobs?
I know I wear rose coloured glasses but the drivel written by so many of our own (supposedly) makes your analytical logic stand head and shoulders above the average non sense of the buy buy buy apologists that we hear so much from. Long may it continue.

    • desigunner says:

Thanks again. I believe on this blog you’ll find many like minded, positive thinking supporters.

      • richie says:

Good! Because there’s so few positive bloggers around! Arse-vision, Cultured left and now for me you my brother Gooner. Amongst the Myriad of Arsene out lunacy that seems to prevail. Often its like reading the ramblings of a rabid dog biting his own leg, to hear our own jumping on the backs of our players and manager. Mostly I can never be bothered to post, I don’t mind criticsm but from our own I want to hear positive contructive criticsm. Negatives we get enough from our opponents, a la Moyes against Fab’s.
