SC Braga 2 – 0 Arsenal: Match Thoughts And Individual Analysis

Firstly, let me just say congratulations to Braga for believing in themselves, playing with a plan, and taking their chances. It was an excellent display of disciplined defending and counter-attacking football by the home side that fully deserves the three points.

Secondly, I’m a bit concerned that refereeing in Europe is slowly going the English way in terms of tolerating dangerous physical play. The ref in this game was astonishingly pathetic and his assistants, especially those behind the goal-line were either blind or really stupid. I don’t say this to take anything away from Braga or to defend the Arsenal performance but just as a fact worth noting.

With that out of the way I can concentrate on Arsenal for the rest of this post.

I was very surprised and concerned when the starting line-up was announced. There were far too many changes for my liking and the starting eleven lacked balance.

With Walcott on the right and Bendtner up front we were always going to have a problem with our pass and move game because neither of them was going to contribute much to that. Theo is good at running with or without the ball but not at the tippy-tappy game. Bendtner’s touch and work rate means he cannot contribute as much as Chamakh does.

In order for us to creatively dominant we needed a strong midfield. By playing Wilshere and Denilson behind a struggling Cesc Arsene made sure we had a very weak midfield. It was compounded by having two full backs who have not played often enough and don’t have the same level of understanding with their teammates as Sagna and Clichy do. Song and Sagna should have started this game.

The result was that Braga were able to press Arsenal high up the pitch and the Gunners couldn’t bring the ball out of their defence in a meaningful way. Wilshere and Denilson struggled under pressure and Cesc did not have the work rate that we’ve come to expect. It could be the effect of his hamstring or a mental issue, I don’t know. The simple fact was that Fabregas rarely dropped deep and that meant most of our passing was square and backwards in the middle third or defensive areas.

The only person who showed any kind of urgency or desire in the first hour of play was Rosicky and it was a shame that he was stuck out on the wing for large parts. Every time Little Mozart came in the middle Arsenal looked more threatening as he was able to hold off the pressure and turn his man.

Walcott’s pace or Bendtner’s height were never really used as the midfield couldn’t create any space.

The first half had some interesting moments but either side failed to create any chances. Braga never really threw too many men forward and one could see they were happy to wait for their chance with the priority being a clean sheet. I don’t blame them; in fact I’d say it was a good tactical decision because if they’d conceded early and had been forced into going forward, Arsenal might have opened them up a lot more often.

Even in the second half I barely recall Arsenal creating anything in the first twenty minutes or so. In contrast, the hosts were gaining in confidence and were looking a lot more threatening on the break as the Arsenal players showed signs of desperation and lack of concentration.

The first horror moment for the Gunners came around the seventy minute mark when Cesc stretched for a ball over the top and immediately signalled for a substitution. I don’t know how long he will be out but I’ve a sneaky feeling this could turn out to be a blessing in disguise.

Wilshere took on more responsibility after Cesc went off and Arsenal looked a lot more threatening. Walcott put Rosicky in behind on the right but his cross was weak and was cleared before it reached an unmarked Bendtner in the six yard box.

A few minutes later Vela was booked for what the ref deemed was a dive. Everyone else watching the game could see it was a clear penalty. That proved to be the turning point as a goal at that time would have put Arsenal in a comfortable position.

Nonetheless, there is very little justification for what followed.

Eboue was injured by a clumsy foul and had to go off. That left Arsenal with 10 men on the pitch. Not surprising giving the referees impotent attitude towards the physical game.

The free kick was in a decent position just inside the Braga half and it was launched towards Chamakh at the back post. The Moroccan wasn’t able to direct is across goal and the ball went behind him towards the touchline. There was no Arsenal player there and the defender was able to find his teammate half way inside their own half. From there, a long ball over the top saw Matheus clean through and he finished with aplomb.

Once again it showed how dumb Arsenal are with their set-pieces. When the ball was going to the back post how can we not have someone on the edge of the box who can attack the clearance or at the very least close the pass down? What’s the point of having Denilson in the middle of defence when he just doesn’t have the pace to chase the runner? Why wasn’t the quickest player, Gibbs, in the defensive line? To me the problems stem from a criminal negligence towards set-pieces, the result of which was there to see all game long.

The ten men had a mountain to climb after the goal with very little time remaining. Most of it was spent hoofing the ball forward without a real plan and Braga were never under pressure.

The game was settled in the final minute of injury time when Matheus was able to break once again. The challenge from Denilson in the centre was really weak. Even then, Gibbs had enough pace to cover and it seemed that even Squillaci got back in time. Unfortunately, the three Arsenal players who got back never really tried to win the ball and Matheus had the talent to place it in the corner to complete a solid win.

Arsenal had 71% possession but it was all “Denilson quality” possession meaning the ball went sideways or backwards with very little genuine threat or penetration.

With two pathetic performances Arsenal have put qualification for the second round in jeopardy and there is a good chance we will finish second in this group even if we win the next game. On the basis of the last two outings I can’t say we deserve any better.

Individual Performances:

Fabianski: Once again didn’t have much to do and couldn’t do much for the goals.

Eboue: not very good. Was embarrassingly nutmegged on a couple of occasions. No real contribution in attack. Sagna would have helped us move the ball better and faster.

Squillaci: Looked solid for an hour but the pressure started to tell after that as the midfield went further forward and left the defence isolated. Almost gifted the opposition a goal with a daft header. Not sure if he played Matheus onside for the first goal. If he did it would be a massive mistake.

Djourou: Superb. Can’t really blame him for this performance. Looked very calm and composed, tackled well, won headers, good distribution.

Gibbs: had a couple of exciting moments in the final third but the final ball was lacking. Did a good job of defending the left wing with a safety first approach. Should have done better for the second goal but I can’t say that affected the result.

On the whole, I can’t really blame the back five except a bit for the second goal, which was academic given its timing. The midfield couldn’t carry the ball forward but the defenders did a decent job except one or two mistakes that happen to every team.

Denilson: Was good at defending and intercepting in the first hour when he was playing close to the defence. Was woeful in bringing the ball out of defence and failed to deal with the pressing. Was clueless when Matheus made the run behind him and didn’t have the pace or willingness to chase. If he’d been sprinting back it might at least have put the striker under pressure to rush his shot.

Wilshere: struggled under pressure initially. Misplaced a number of passes. Did well in the final 15-20 mins.

Cesc: lacklustre and uncharacteristic. Doesn’t matter whether he has a physical or mental issue, he should not be playing if he is struggling so much.

The midfield was easily the biggest problem area. We could rarely bring the ball forward with purpose and incisiveness. A substitution should have been made at half-time or early in the second half. Of course one can argue that if the penalty decision had been correct the same team and tactics would have succeeded. My point is that this game should have been a lot more comfortable and should not have come down to one penalty decision so late in the game.

Walcott: was boxed in a corner for most of the game, his runs were rarely picked. Can’t blame him much.

Bendtner: had to drop deep far too often but his positioning in the box and desire to attack the ball can be questioned. Still he didn’t do too bad given the appalling lack of service.

Rosicky: My man of the match if one can be given in such a game. Looked confident, always positive on the ball, decent defensive shift.

I don’t blame the attackers for this result. They rarely got any service and only reason Rosicky looked lively was down to the fact that he dropped deep and came into midfield. Can’t really expect that from Walcott and there wasn’t much Bendtner could have done.

Subs: Chamakh won some balls in the air, Vela looked lively, Nasri didn’t get into the game that much.

“We need to realise the games are hard.” Johan Djourou, about an hour ago.
THIS IS EXACTLY WHAT I MEAN. ARROGANCE.
What the f**k is this attitude?? Why don’t they know that games are “hard” already????

    AAAAAAAAAAAAAAGGGGGGGGGHHHHHHHH

    • desigunner says:

I have a feeling Djourou is saying that because he doesn’t really know what else to say. I certainly don’t expect in-depth analysis from the players.

The body language of the players didn’t look arrogant to me, if anything I thought they were a bit diffident.

For instance, Wilshere was very restrained in the first 70 minutes or so. He certainly wasn’t arrogant. Similarly, Cesc was clearly not in the game but he wasn’t being arrogant.

  2. Miranda says:

You were surprised by the starting line-up? But you predicted and wanted Rosicky, Bendtner and Walcott up front? And you thought Bendtner did OK, just suffered from lack of service? But surely the main reason he doesn’t get the service is that he drops deep and is lumberingly slow and fails to make the right runs? I blame the attacking line-up quite as much as the defence. Over 60 percent possession and only one shot on target (Cesc’s) for the first 70 minutes – sure, Braga, aided by the ref, cheated us out of the game, but our inability to score was the reason we lost.

    • desigunner says:

Actually I don’t blame the attack or the defence. The problem was with the midfield that kept moving the ball square and backwards.

Bendtner was forced into dropping deep because Wilshere and Denilson were not able to bring the ball forward, Cesc wasn’t dropping back to help them, and there was no one who wanted to play it long to him.

I have no doubt the attackers would have done much better if we had meaningful possession in the middle. I’m trying to recall but I can’t remember a single high quality pass from midfield to the attackers in the first 60-70 mins.

      • santori says:

Haven’t seen the match so I will refrain from comments on specific play till I get to catch the highlights. BUT :

This is the problem with ‘Arrogance’ at the moment Desi, we don’t deserve it.

I was extremely concern with Wenger putting out a B side. We needed to take this game seriously and put it away convincingly.

We have now a psychological hill to climb ahead of us.

AGAIN, Wenger has to take the blame for this.

He picks the team sheet, he’s guilty of underestimating the opponents.

We cannot hide behind poor refereeing decisions or any other excuse for our poor performance

I think Wenger is much too accommodating to his players. They need to be read the riot act. BUT above all, he really needs to seriously self examine some of the decision making as far as team composition goes.

    • JB says:

I have to agree, you can not expect the midfield to pass it through the middle every single time they have the ball, it is the responsibility of the front three to come in and help link the play by providing options. As you noted, this isnt the strength of Bendtner or Walcott, but this is why there are a lot of sideways passes; there were no better options.
I dont understand the constant denilson and squillaci bashing either…

      • santori says:

This is again a question of tactics.

We are not allowing ourselves to play with variation.

        New assistant please.

      • desigunner says:

I don’t expect the midfield to pass the ball through the middle every single time, but in this particular game I didn’t see them string together even one decent move that had the Arsenal class.

When we start the game with Walcott and Bendtner we know what we will and won’t get up front. It’s not like we just discovered this tonight. So it’s obvious to me that the midfield should have been aware of what they had to do right from kick-off.

I saw Walcott make a number of good runs but rarely did anyone try to pick him out. What more can an attacking player do?

  3. Wilsheres dad says:

FFS…we didn’t even need to win this game. Our teams have the tactical nous of a hedgehog crossing a road!!! For Braga only a win would give them a chance
of progressing to the final 16, but clearly their priority was not to get another thumping & restore a little pride, even with a draw. It had to be clear to anyone with a brain that if the score was level when the game entered it’s final quarter, that Braga would cautiously increase their pressure & that our priority at that stage would be to to keep control of the game & focussed at the back.If they had any intension of winning, this was when they would have to make their move & would accordingly be at their most vulnerable. If they wanted to park the bus for 90 minutes…fine..let them, because we didn’t need to win. But no, we had to keep pressing, with the defenders spectating on the half way line.
We have some fine players but as a team, tactically they are clueless.

    • santori says:

      Tactically the boss is ‘clueless’.

I wouldn’t blame the players. Wenger needs to sort it out.

      • Miranda says:

No, I wouldn’t blame the players either. It’s not their job to select the team, work out a game plan and make the right substitutions at the right time. It’s also not their job to think about and improve our horrendous record with injuries. And it’s not their job to ensure, given the fact that half our squad is always out injured, that we have enough quality players to cope when the big games come thick and fast around April. I mean, how many games per season has Van Persie EVER played? What happens if Song and Chamakh get badly injured? Why do we always find ourselves with this same problem year after year after year? Pretty disheartening for players like Nasri and Cesc who have the talent to go far in the Champions League to always be deprived of the chance.

    • desigunner says:

Excellent point WD. We didn’t need a win and the opposition didn’t look like they can score in the first hour. Arsenal should have controlled the game better towards the end. We could have forced them out and hit them on the break.

    • MSL says:

“But no, we had to keep pressing, with the defenders spectating on the half way line.
We have some fine players but as a team, tactically they are clueless.” Amen to that. Some of us have been beating this drum for a while. Our team doesn’t do a few things differently like playing defensive once in a while and knowing how to soak pressure. Wenger doesn’t believe our team can play a game without pressing the ball up all the time. Its a good strategy to keep the ball but once in a while you lose shape and boom! I guess we called one-dimensional. Still is. Wonder what the bandwagonistas have on this one.

  4. robin says:

Wenger is not intelligent enough to get us out of this, playing Fabregas when he´s carrying an injury is plain stupid. Don´t fool yourselves, we´re in deep shit now.
How the f-k it´s possible in Wengers head to play Denilson as a defensive midfielder is beyond me, the lazy prick suddenly doesn´t give a shit, he doesn´t give a shit about Arsenal.
Spurs players will do that extra for Twitchy, but Arsenes lovekids will NEVER do anything extra for him and Denilson is the perfect example…
Wonder if Wenger ever told the lazy prick to fight for 90 min?

    • santori says:

Frankly DM is an area where we could do with some added experience.

Song is good and Frimpong up and coming but we could well do with someone who knows how to close the shop.

As and aside, might be interesting to eexperiment Koscielny in this position, at least as a back up to Song. Denilson clearly cannot sustain his performance and adds nothing going forward.

  5. kel says:

pathetic performance this team is just lost! get keown, dixon and bergkamp involved in the background now. . come january go for scott parker & Suarez
we have the money, we need change, and most importantly wenger needs challenged from within….

    • Jim says:

You’re kidding. Wenger never spends so stop saying we have the money. Wenger is equivalent to God at Arsenal so there’s no such thing as challenge from within.

We must wait until 2014 when Wenger retires to see any changes. That however assumes that he’s going back to France. More likely, he will be elevated to the Arsenal board, in which case we won’t see any changes until he dies.

      • kel says:

jim your talking complete bollocks m8 Arsenal do have money wenger chooses not to spend it. but we do have it! and you see this wenger is god bullshit let me tell ya something m8 we pay his fuckin wages not the other way around so there’s no reason why he shouldn’t be challenged from within. if he keeps making the same mistakes i dont think we should all sit and except it until he dies??? fuckin hell talk about a gutless attitude..

  6. faiz says:

wow you must really like bendtner if you thought he did ok… Because he was god awful…I think that was the worst I have seen anyone play ever… Bayern munich won’t pay a penny for this big lump of shite.

  7. Wilsheres dad says:

Santori…I agree Wenger appears to be clueless tactically, but the Arsenal team surely don’t need to be told such tactical basics when there was only one team that had to win the game. It’s not like we put out a team of rookies who’ve never played together. We fielded 9 internationals.

    • desigunner says:

I’m not sure Arsenal know how to play for a draw and that is a tactical deficiency. Once Braga started to put some pressure the weakness of the midfield was getting exposed and the team panicked and lost the plot momentarily.

Even the substitutions were surprising because we could have brought on Song for Cesc to keep it tight but we went for Nasri.

    • santori says:

Crucially, we are devoid of a leader with gumption.

Nasri should be vice Captain in Vermaelen’s absence. We need players who have fight, not ones who get injured every time the going gets tough.

  8. Dan says:

4-5-1 is an awful formation. Even with Torres/Drogba up front, we’d be struggling. It’s time for Wenger to realise that we aren’t Spain/Barca and we do not play in La Liga. Time to revert to a 4-4-2 and build another team of athletically powerful and tactically aware players (i.e. the “Invincibles Mk. II”).

I do not believe in the manager anymore, either move him upstairs or appoint George Graham as his assistant!

  9. geoff reid says:

worst gunner team ever–also crap manager.

  10. winner says:

Pathetic result. And for the second time in a row in the Champions League, Arsenal has lost away from home. These two losses are attributable to one thing-Wenger and the team’s complacency. The team selection tonight suggests that Wenger was certain that a second string side would do the job. The same can be said of the team that lost to Shakthar. Well, that was a miscalculation and we paid dearly for it. The reasonable thing to was to win the group first and then start fielding these second string sides. As things now stand at best Arsenal can now finish second. i do not see Donetesk losing at home against Braga in a must win game. The prize for this approach to a very easy group means Arsenal are now likely to meet one of barcelona, real madrid, bayern munich in the second round. e cannot beat any of these teams with such lifeless performance or the ill-conceived generosity that we extended to spurs over the weekend. To me our approach towards the last two champions league games smacks of arrogance and over confidence on the manager’s part. Unfortunately, this result means Arsenal has lost 4 of the last 6 games. These results point to a crisis although many will dispute this. I would like to suggest that RESULTS DO NOT LIE as arguments sometimes do.
Best wishes for the weekend games.

Unless, something is done by christmas Arsenal will be out of the running for the Title.

That is not difficult to figure out. Assuming our rivals win their games..a loss to Man United will leave us 5 points behind, and another loss to Chelsea will leave us 8 points behind. Based on this performance, or rather this run of results can we expect Arsenal to win all the other games between now and christmas? My humble answer is No. If our rivals are consistent, believe me, we have put ourselves in a very difficult position. We have no one but ourselves to blame for complicating what was a very promising season. This has been a difficult three weeks to be an arsenal supporter. One would love to opine that we do not deserve this.

    • desigunner says:

“assuming our rivals win their games”? On what we’ve seen so far I don’t see the basis for that assumption. Even Chelsea lost 3 out of 4 recently. These things happen. Creating meaningless doom scenarios doesn’t help anyone.

If you want to criticize why not focus on issues and relevant examples rather than vague generalizations?

  11. JP says:

Do we really think we can make all those changes to the team on two important away games in the Champions League and not skip a beat??? We do not have that kind of quality depth come on. As posted before, somebody is either delusional in their thinking or not taking this competition seriously. Either case is disturbing. For all those Denilson fans, there is a reason he is one of the only players left at Arsenal during International duty. He is not good enough.

  12. Steve says:

I could think of a few positions Van der Vaat could slot into in the Arsenal midfield at the moment.

After watching the game in silence….the commentary was in Thai and either way I didnt want to wake my wife sleeping in the hotel room….I would go further to say the officials were not incompetent but totally biased.

Eboue’s yellow, clear penalty, corners not given, cards not given to Braga players etc….

Fabregas – awful, Bendtner – awful, Walcott – ineffective. Eboue was clearly affected by the yellow – up till then was going ok. The Braga defence was very solid – Nasri made no impact when he came on and he supposedly is our best player.

When the goal was conceded it was played to where Eboue was supposed to have been but he had been cut down by Mattheus who should have been given a yellow for his pathetic performance when Eboue was booked. It is difficult to understand how he could be in so uch pain when Eboue not only took the ball but did not touch the player at all! The second goal – well thats what happens when you are playing catch up.
For me the upside was the players not arguing with the ref….I personally felt like punching him in the face!

    • desigunner says:

I think Van der Vaart can only play in the attacking midfield role for Arsenal and having him would have meant a change in role for Cesc. Right now Cesc and Nasri are ahead of him for that role but when Fabregas plays the way he did in this game, we can’t really judge as we don’t know his injury state. Towards the end we’d lost our shape and system. It’s difficult for an attacking player like Nasri to succeed in that and I’m sure VdV would have struggled just as much.

I didn’t want to talk too much about the officials because that would seem like making excuses but I agree with your observations.

      • santori says:

Not trying to fault Fabregas for what is an injury but is it just me or does the Captain tend to disappear when the going gets tough?

Last season, it was following our defeat to Barca. I believe he went out again following the Chelsea defeat and now he’s out again at precisely the wrong time.

  13. JP says:

Let’s hope we can re group for the weekend

  14. IndianGunner says:

It seems if we lose a game we don’t tend to show in the next one as well. I think as posted above, our priority should have been a draw which would have put as through to the knockout stages. I still believe we would go through barring a bizzare win by Braga at Spartak which is unlikely. Anyways partizan shouldn’t be too much of a problem at home but the way things are going you never know.
I think we are missing Diaby in midfield. I know that’s not an excuse but after Song he would be the next best in the holding role i guess. Also having an extra option would have kept all the three(Song, Diaby and Denilson) much fresh for the games which are coming thick and fast
I just hope the injuries today are minor since we do have some important games coming up

  15. arvind says:

at this point Im of the mind to agree with the comments about a new coaching staff. Something is not working terribly here. Adams. Keown..start with defense first! We have great individual talent but are no cohesive defensively. This needs to change.

Im also of the mind to have someone take a belt to the asses of our players who under-perform or are complacent. take em out to the barn and whip em good. Wenger is too easy on his players. HE is a great youth mentor, scout and teacher but at this level he handicaps his players by the lack of accountability and babying. Call them out… challenge them, motivate them… positively or negatively but get the most of out them. Make them earn their pay!

There are millions of Arsenal fans all over the world who put all their emotions and hard earned money behind this team. The players need to know this.. to see that they have a great responsibility to the fans and a commitment to playing lights out 110% all the time.

I thing a shake up of sorts if so needed right now. we cannot continue this way… if we dont make changes… nothing will change.

    • JP says:

arvind I agree with you on this point. It gets to the point that I wish Wenger had a ruthless streak like Fergy. I really think that a bit of that is needed to keep players honest and working hard. Wenger talks about competition for spots etc but he defends them to a tee and keeps blowing wind up their butts (publicly at least). And the end results are complacency and an apparent taking things for granted. He needs to crack the whip more, it keeps players accountable.

      • JP says:

Maybe its time to show some of that frustration the manager has with referees and transfer it inward.

      • arvind says:

JP I can guarantee you all these guys sleep well at night. even after a bad loss, i doubt anyone loses any sleep over it. Get the belt out JP…get the belt out.

Again, I say we need some sort of come to jesus moment with this team… a shake up.. changes that make players more accountable, and that includes the coach… as ppl have said before Pat Rice is too close to Wenger to call the New Emperors Clothes.

  16. santori says:

This is both part and parcel of Wenger’s strength and his weakness.

On the one hand he encourages players and they benefit from his patience and belief.

BUT OTOH he is far too forgiving and they tend to take their progression too much for granted.

Some non performing players should be on final warning. We have enough players pushing through from the Academy and Wenger should not be afraid to replace directly from market. Benzema comes to mind.

    • arvind says:

There is no final warning. At least not with Wenger in charge. What baffles me is how he was so cold and ruthless in letting go our invincibles…as soon as they hit 30 it was their death sentence. It was heartbreaking. One by one yet they were sent packing… he does not even have the balls to straighten out our under-performing youngsters. He has his positives but this is a glaring negative that has been in the background for the last few years with his youth experiment… some shake up needs to happen…. a defensive coach for starters… a coaching staff that these youngsters look up too… ex players who earned their pay and trophies

  17. Bergkampfan10 says:

WHAT IDIOTS! this poor result means we will in all likelihood end up second (i pray Braga beat Shahktar but still doubt it).

if we end up 2nd, we will be up against the likes of real, barca and bayern. we will be lucky to go up against a deteriorating Inter squad.

    • Nischit says:

you do realize that if braga beat shakthar, then it means arsenal have to beat partizan? On our current form, I’d rather have shakthar top the group if it means us being guaranteed a spot

  18. Nischit says:

We were toothless in attack. Bendtner did nothing to back his words up. Cesc tried but lacked support. Chamakh made a HUGE difference. Those are all the nice things I have to say about this performance.

  19. Jim says:

“If Denilson been sprinting back it might…”. For all the Arsenal matches that Denilson has played, I’ve never seen him sprinting. When his loses the ball, that’s it, there he is jogging back. Denilson is a decent player but there seems to be something wrong with his head.

    • arvind says:

      call him the “jogger”

      • JP says:

You guys have hit the nail on the head with Denilson. I was done with him last year when Rooney sprinted from beyond the halfway line (past Denilson like he was standing still) to the penalty spot to score. I can forgive you if you put in all your effort and are undone at the end of it. But as you state he does not track back with urgency or full steam. Denilson is better with the ball at his feet, passing sideways and back, he can intercept on occasion too. I don’t fancy him as an enforcer tackler type and he tracks like a lazy Brazilian who thinks it’s somebody else’s job. We get burnt on a regular basis as a result.

  20. ACGunner says:

We looked solid for an hour or so because Braga was absorbing the pressure and waiting for the counter. When Shakhtar took the lead and Arsenal/Braga was still at stalemate, Braga knew they had to attack. There’s no other option; a draw would effectively knocked them out and secure Arsenal the place in the play offs.

And what did Arsenal do? Push their defence further up, conned by the defensive Braga play in the 1st hr.

Was this a 1 off? Nah… I am so used to this tactical naviety and comfortably numb by the players’ inability to learn from past lessons.

Its deja vu and Christmas again… time for the same group of players to seek treatment for injuries. Sounds the same right? Because it’s been the same for the past 5 seasons

ps…. and oh… look for the press interviews and see what our gaffer had to say. Deja vu

    • critic says:

i think wenger no matter ho gr8 he is he can’t control or change players approach from the sidelines.

        @critic

r u into competitive football? Remember the WC games where teams were aware of what’s going on in their groups? No?

Have you not seen Mourinho gesticulating at the sidelines? No?

I do because I used to be in competitive football. And I’m no professional football genius like what ppl proclaim Wenger to be. It’s common sense, practical tactical nous.

And if you read the press again, Wenger was again into complaining that Braga played negatively. What do you expect your from your opponents? Play to your strength? Or do he expect the opponents to do a belly up and let him pass? The more excuses he gives, the more apparent it is that he’s lost his plot, and this is not a 1 off. 5 long years and the same freaking excuses. Don’t take my word for it. Google past comments and rants from Wenger. Same old freaking excuses but no solution, yet.

I’m not about to call for his head but hopefully, he can take some advice and improve Arsenal. After all, something is bigger than Arsenal.

After all, nothing is lost. We play Partizan at home. With good motivation and a strong squad we’ll make it happen. No doubt. Look at Barca how they played away with Rubin. I still think this is THE year for Arsenal.

i think we r heading towards europa league, arsenal are just not in the state of mind to handle any kind of pressure from home fans. hopefully shakthar can beat braga. We need a bit luck now.
Why only u notice problems in arsenal team what is management and board doing???

p.s i just love to imagine the worst thing that’s nearly impossible. if it happens pain is less and if it doesn’t i am overjoyed.

Ways what did u guys expected in november??
why do arsenal loses in pairs???
We won’t lose at villa that u can take my word for.(my assumption might increase the pain of loss).

i personally think wenger took a gamble here to test the untested and rest the tested. Song was rested b’coz there is no replacement for him in the team. nasri just has played too many games besides he is our best player. Walcott’s finishing was rotting on the bench and bendtner was getting too noisy, arshavin was injured and denilson consistency is still questionable.
He must be confident that arsenal will be good enuff to beat belgrade at ems in DECEMBER.

last time we finished 2nd we reached semis without playing flowing football. I personally want north london derby at pre quarters. It wud be a gr8 game running with passion.

  23. Tim says:

At times like Saturday and last night, we lack leadership in the spine of the team – a Vieira or a Campbell in their pomp – who will not allow the team to sit back when they get nervous, but instead step up to the challenge and press the ball even harder.

We are too passive in difficult situations, and the second goal last night was a prime example of this. Three defenders around Matheus. One of them should have stepped up and tackled him – or at least fouled him. Instead they all backed off. Sol would have just flattened him.

Wenger is partly to blame for the players’ attitude, but leadership isn’t something you can really coach. The players either have it or they don’t. Sadly, no one – not even Cesc – in this current group does, except for the injured Vermaelen.

I have said it time and again, our attack is blunt and we loose lots of games we should be winning. It means If Wenger wants us to progress we have to keep our attack oriented players together and on the ball. I want A trial for RvP and Chamark on the pitch together for over 60Mins.

  25. winston says:

Is this not a result of not discussing tactics and strategy?(apparently not the Arsenal way)Many players including former Arsenal players have siad how Wenger never discusses tactics and only concentrates on our Style of playing. In an ideal footballing world yes this would work admirably because every one would try to play the beautiful game. But it can be taken as a given that most teams with the exception of Barca know they will get slaughtered if they did that.Self preservation then is the abiding message for them. They know if they resist our attempts long enough, completely block us off then towards the end when our concentration is a little down they can sneak a goal. This has been the story for several years now.It doesn’t help that our tempo of play as in the Henry/Brgamp,overmars era does not seem to be there giving opposition enough time to reorganise their defences.I find it hard to think that Wenger who is a very astute manager and a great thinker of the game does not realise this as every one else seem to see it.Is it Pride? Is it ego? to prove every one else wrong?.I dont know. But like a lot of Arsenal fans know it hurts for sure.I still believe we will qulify for the play offs.

  26. Miranda says:

Why do people think we didn’t need to win the game? Braga will beat Shakhtar who, since they’ll top the group regardless, will play their reserves. If we beat Partizan, which isn’t a foregone conclusion, we can now draw Barca, Real (who I think will win it), Bayern, Lyon or, if Spurs don’t top their group, Inter who by Feb will have a better manager and be back to their former selves. Of that choice, only Lyon would be beatable, and only if we put our best players out. It’s a bit different, 20 million different to put a price on it, from the likes of Basel or Marseilles.

I’m wondering if Wenger isn’t responding to fan pressure. At the last supporters’ general meeting he was urged to go for trophies and to focus on the FA Cup at the expense of the CL. I was horrified by this and I’d imagine the players are too, since for a young European Europe is where it’s at and the FA Cup has zero prestige.

I’d be interested to know how other people feel about this. The fans who attend the supporters’ functions are mainly from a very specific demographic: local, white, late-middle-aged men, in short supporters who’ve grown up in the more insular seventies and eighties when the domestic comps were everything and Europe, at least to the English, didn’t mean very much. Trouble is, these days the average Arsenal fan, as opposed to the season-ticket holder, is more likely to be a teenager in Africa or Norway than a 50-year-old in North London. How many of you value the FA Cup and the Carling and aren’t much bothered if we go out of the CL in the group stage or round of 16?

Since I am unable to work out how to leave a comment on the About page, let me say here that this is an excellent, excellent Arsenal blog, and as an expatriate British Gooner of Indian origin I am delighted by its desi origins.

Regarding the last two results: I know that in today’s instant response era (I have been supporting Arsenal for forty years) there is a tendency to exaggerate the significance of a run of poor form, but I think the losses to Spurs and Braga are symptomatic of problems we have been manifesting for a long time: the inability to close out a game, a tendency to over-elaborate in attack, and defensive frailty. I am also alarmed by what appears to be a lack of effort, will, and desire when things are not running smoothly. Given that all this is the case, I find Arsene’s excuses for our shortcomings both superficial and delusional.

I am not looking to apportion blame, but I do think an important first step in problem-solving is acknowledging that there is an issue, and he seems loth to do this. Our tactical naivete is particularly frustrating. As many bloggers and posters have mentioned over recent seasons, better defensive drilling and work on set pieces, pressing, and crossing might be good places to start.

Denilson has got to be sold. I agree most of his passing is sideways or backwards with no result, and as a holding midfield player useless.

I believe that SC Braga was not the better team and they did not have more advantages then Arsenal, but once SC Braga saw the advantage they took it. Braga is in my opinion the most improved soccer team in the world. Now Braga is a millionaire team (4th richest in Portugal) but still need fans support and of course the UEFA Champions League support. With the UEFA Champions League support, Braga will have more money and a better possibility of winning the UEFA Champions League. In my opinion Sporting Clube De Braga will be able to win the UEFA Champions League and will be the 3rd team in Portugal to win the UEFA Champions League. Braga has the heart and skill to be the best team in the world, but they cant do it themselves. They have all my support (100%). GO BRAGA
