Man City 0 – 3 Arsenal: Match Thoughts And Individual Analysis

Wooo Hooo!

What a performance! This is the kind of game that gives an Arsenal supporter a high like no other. It’s been coming for a while but we couldn’t really know for sure unless it arrived. Now that it has, we can say a mental barrier has been crossed. It’s not the final frontier but a major challenge nonetheless.

It wasn’t a perfect game but it didn’t have to be. That just shows how much better we can get.

The game started at a high tempo. City created the first chance in the opening minute when Tevez got in behind down the left and squared it. Silva made an excellent run and got a great flick towards goal. Fabianski made a superb save. We knew at that moment this game was going to be fun.

City had some joy down the left in the opening minutes while Arsenal were trying to play down the middle. I thought Arshavin was harshly flagged off-side early on when he made a run past Boyata. The big moment however, came in the fifth minute when Chamakh timed his run brilliantly and was found by Cesc with an inch perfect ball. Boyata lunged and the ref had no choice but to send him off.

I know there will be many Arsenal distractors and City apologists who will point to this moment and say it made it easy for Arsenal. I don’t buy it. When you play a youngster at this level there is always the risk of a big moment going horribly wrong. As Arsenal fans we know it all too well. The fact that City were forced to do so just shows spending big isn’t always the solution. If a team spends crazy money on a big, strong, English defender like Lescott only to realize that he’s not good enough, one cannot have much sympathy towards them.

The game clearly changed after this moment as Yaya Toure was moved into a central defensive role and this gave Arsenal a numerical advantage in midfield. From this point on the hosts were always going to struggle against the passing and movement of Arsenal.

We had a lot of the ball but Barry and De Jong were doing a good job of closing us down. Some cynical fouls and the ref giving them almost all the 50-50 decisions helped.

The first goal came almost out of nowhere. Nasri had the ball on the edge of the box. Arshavin, who was inside the penalty area, came towards him and played a delightful one-two. The finish from the Frenchman was the definition of clinical and composed.

It was interesting to note that Yaya Toure looked like a joker in central defence as he didn’t close the Russian down and allowed the ball to go through his legs for the one-two. What a waste of money! Yes it wasn’t his best position, but how many times have we seen Arsenal players being criticised even when they’re playing out of position? At this level, and with the kind of hype around him, he should have done much better.

City did try to come back into the game after that. Arsenal, for a while, looked confused. We didn’t know whether to go for the kill or to hold back. That meant players were not in perfect sync and we kept giving the ball away.

Luckily for us, Mancini’s team didn’t have any creative threat except Silva, and were restricted to taking the ball out wide and crossing. Our defenders did a good job of dealing with the balls in the box.

We should have established some comfort level when Kompany conceded a penalty with a daft tackle on Fabregas. But the hesitancy in our play was also evident in the way El Capitan went for his penalty. It was a decent strike but he almost telegraphed it to Hart who made a top class save to his left.

City got some heart from that and came forward. Arsenal dropped deep and defended with numbers to see out the game till half time.

Straight after restart we had a good chance when Chamakh outmuscled Boateng. The Moroccan found Cesc who exchanged passes with Nasri in the box but his finish was not of his usual standard. There was another moment a few minutes later when we overcomplicated things around the edge of the box.

We could see that Arsene had calmed the team down at half-time and we were doing the right thing tactically. If there is any time that can be considered a good time to play tippy-tappy football, this was it. In the second half we did it well and made City chase the ball.

Meanwhile Adebayor had come on in place of Tevez who might have picked up an injury. City had a few minutes of sustained pressure on either side of the hour mark. Most of the times, they were trying to play the ball wide and then get in behind. Arsenal didn’t do a very good job of reading these situations but dealt with it by having enough numbers behind. On the odd occasion when the hosts did get in, Fabianski handled the situation with a save from a Silva strike standing out.

Song was moving forward quite often. We weren’t exposed because Cesc and Denilson did a decent job of covering for him and we had a man advantage. The Cameroonian finally made an impact with an exceptional finish. The ball was played in towards Chamakh who almost got in but Bridge intercepted with a toe poke. Song was first to react and smashed it into the far corner with one swift movement.

After the second goal, City looked almost clueless as Arsenal players made them chase the ball. We created some chances but didn’t score the third. Mancini’s side were tiring and didn’t have any creative edge. Their only hopes were some balls over the top but our defence dealt with them fairly well. Fabianski came up with an excellent point blank save from an Adebayor header but we all knew the striker would be off-side. It’s what he’s best at.

Wenger brought Rosicky on with twenty minutes to go and it helped us control the ball even better. You could sense the moneybags had given up. Even then, in such situations a goal can lift the struggling side and we did extremely well to maintain our focus for the duration of the game.

Le Boss introduced Bendtner and Walcott for Cesc and Chamakh, both of whom had put in an incredible shift. The Dane got his reward with a couple of minutes to go. Nasri controlled the ball just on the touchline and played him through. Bendtner scored with another superb finish.

City has some late pressure as Arsenal took it easy but we always had enough players back to protect the goal.

Individual Performances

Fabianski: Excellent. Was on top of his game from the first minute. Made some good saves, swept well behind the defence. In the preview I mentioned that it will be nice if he is forced into action and delivers. That’s the perfect way to get the confidence high.

Sagna: Back to his solid self. Excellent defending on the right. Made some good runs forward. Put in a couple of top class crosses (Djourou should have scored from one).

Squillaci: Did everything he had to do. His positioning was excellent. When Richards had a good chance it was his positioning that forced the shot wide.

Djourou: Looked a little shaky at times. Got turned on a few occasions but did well to cover up. He has to improve his reading of the game and the way he stands. Did well against the balls over the top, won almost everything against the midget Tevez! Good covering on the left when Clichy was outnumbered.

Clichy: Good game. I know City created some moments down the left but that was mainly due to more numbers. Rarely lost a one-v-one, and ran back well to cover when he did. Very important in terms of our possession game and put in a couple of good crosses.

Song: Big game. Unbelievable work rate, excellent defensive reading and tackling, good contribution in attack and a fantastic goal. He did make a couple of rough tackles early on but controlled himself well after the booking. Another guy we know will get better and better.

Cesc: his performance was a classic example of pulling the strings. Was all over the pitch, dropped deep when Song went forward. Picked some excellent passes. Maintained his composure despite being on the end of some deliberate rash tackles. Worked hard defensively. Penalty miss was the only blot.

Denilson: I was surprised he was picked for such a big game as he’s rarely played. Did the simple things well. Understated performance, but that’s what we needed with an extra man in the middle.

Nasri: It took some time for him to get in the game but made a huge impact once he did. Amazing work rate, good defensive tracking, always looked like a threat, beautiful finish. Assist for Bendtner showed he was alert and focused even at a late stage. My man of the match, just ahead of Song and Cesc.

Chamakh: insane work rate, excellent run that got us the man advantage, tracked back quite often and made some good interceptions as well.

Arshavin: started off slowly but got involved as the game went on. Wonderful assist for Nasri, also did some good defensive work when Clichy was up-field. In a way you could say his work rate meant the man advantage was not that big but Arshavin is not in the team for doing the donkey work. As we’ve seen, De Jong, Barry and others did a lot of that but to no avail. The first goal is so important and most often in big games, the Russian provides the inspiration.

Subs: Rosicky kept it ticking, it was good to see Theo tearing down, Bendtner’s finish was heart-warming.

It’s funny pundits are already saying the score-line wasn’t a true reflection of the game. We had 65 percent of possession, created more and better chances, scored three wonderful goals but it’s just not enough for the distractors.

Great Win!! Haven’t felt this floored over 3 points in a good while! Things are lookn Up for our Gunners! Roll on Newcastle.

  3. JP says:

A very good performance for the Gunners. We took advantage of the extra man and sealed the deal. Still things to work on but overall I think attitude, confidence and harmony in the team is on the rise and we can see it. Extra credit to Fabianski as he has come back strong and I think he deserves to remain #1 at the moment. Believe me I have been one of his most vocal detractors in the past but he has had a good run and looks more confident playing at this level. Congrats to the boys and we only hope yo go from strength to strength

    • Zgunner says:

Anyone who ever called him flappy or anything of that sort should be ashamed of themselves. So much for helping his confidence when he was down.. some fans are outrageous in their harshness. What an excellent goalkeeper he proved to be… amazing what confidence does. Think about that if you’ve been one of those people who were after Song, booing Eboue, Bendtner, Denilson, Diaby, Fabianski, Fabregas and even Almunia (as awful as many STILL think he is it was 100% defense that lost the game against west brom). I think so many fans have a short memory of Almunia and how many spectacular saves he’s made the club. Name a player that hasn’t goofed in their career? Fabregas missed a penalty today… I wouldn’t be surprised some $%$#%$ is going to try to crucify Fabregas for it.

To everyone that thinks Denilson is not worth the shirt… YOU saw today.
To all those that Doubted Nasri, Rosicky, Arshavin… You SAW today.
To all those that questioned Bendtner as a dangerous striker.. You saw TODAY.

To all those that doubted Wenger on the way he manages his team, transfers (Chamakh), and who to trust between the sticks.. He is the one in charge and I doubt anyone would be able to put together a team like this man can over years and years and years… most managers/people don’t have the patience.

Today’s game was worth the wait! Football wins… not money.

Great match and great article! A bit arsenal-biased but I think after a match like this you can be forgiven for that! :) Liked the way we controlled the game in midfield although I must admit our central defence did look shaky at times. Djourou still needs to up his game for me. Fabianski made some terrific saves and his confidence is coming back! If he keeps this up it’ll be interesting who Le Boss chooses between the sticks once Almunia is fit and back in the squad. Clichy seems to be putting his defensive errors behind him and Sagna’s crossing seems to be improving. All in all, a great game and a great clean sheet! Bring on Newcastle!!!

    • Zgunner says:

      West Ham :)

    • desigunner says:

There were a few shaky moments no doubt but I chose to leave that out after such a win. There is an overdose of that on the net anyway :D

    • AnonymousGun says:

A BIT Arsenal biased? Its call desiGUNNER for a reason ;)

Big huge point to detractors to take note.. these are 3 huge points won by Fabianski for us. They are clamoring for a worl class keeper to win points, and lo and behold .. they got one now.. and we only pay it with patience and a bit of time.

  5. MSL says:

We won the sending off. Fair and square. Pundits will not give in so easily. We need to repeat such performances to convince ourselves too. I was scared when all our midfielders had picked up yellows. I was getting nervous as City pushed and punched in first hour. We weathered the storm much better than expected. Djourou got too tight on players at times and he didn’t seem to read the game as well as he did last time.

We could have been easily made to rue our lack of shooting, glad we didn’t have to. Cesc doesn’t look completely fit. Apart from that, there is not much to take away from Arsenal. 3 point and gung-ho with the win.

Denilson got picked maybe because he is better balance defensively and offensively compared to Diaby. This also shows Wenger trusts Song to play well when going forward.

Waiting for the injury news as this was tough battle.

    • desigunner says:

You’re right, we have to repeat these performances. Consistency, as Arsene says, will be the key.

I do disagree on the part of weathering the storm, because for all their physicality City barely created two or three decent chances. I’d say we never let the storm build and that’s the best way of defending. There were some individual mistakes but someone was always there to cover and that’s important in our system.

    • AnonymousGun says:

Djorou was too loose for Zigic last time.. and we got punished .. He went too tight on Tevez .. and peoples rant .. he didnt cost us a goal and he did go against Tevez who are on form.. give him some slack.

He still trying to find his feet!

  6. Metalhead says:

Mr Macaroni said in his post match interview that had Boyata not been sent off, City would have have won the game. Well, I don’t know about the others but I’d take that as a pinch of salt! I thought Arsenal were dominant throughout the game. Defensively just a little bit shaky as usual.

Diaby was left out of the squad. I wonder if he is injured again. Also, I think Cesc has a niggle. I saw him have a word with Wenger and the next thing you know he is substituted. I hope it’s not serious.

    • desigunner says:

Cesc gave his all, could be that he’s tweaked something. There was a moment in between, I think after the De Jong tackle, that he was holding his thigh.

We can’t really afford that with the tight schedule over the next month and half. Hopefully, the injury news this winter will be better than last couple of seasons.

Another excellent analysis. Sometimes I wonder if it’s just a (rarish?) similar way of thinking that I and the esteemed blogger have in common… but I have had problems finding commentary that I find suited to my taste.

There are many enjoyable blogs. I only follow two others anymore because of time issues: Arseblog because he is funny, but I rarely agree with his footballistic content; and A Cultured Left Foot which has depth.

Can you guys recommend other sites to look at that have the same kind of intellectual content that Desi Gunner has?

(Oh and sorry for my North European bad knowledge: from the first comment above I figured out that “desi” is a term referring to India. Anyone want to explain a bit further so I’ll know just a little bit more about life and stuff?)

  9. venky says:

I said yesterday that I was so happy for Fabianski, today he showed us all what Arsene says that he had been seeing in training. For me, the first reflex save from silva in the 2nd minute was a huge moment rather than the sending off simply because had it gone in, after the sending off, with 1-0 up they would have put the whole them in defence. we all have seen how difficult it is to break a team with a man down, because a ten man team always knows they have to raise the level against 11 men and more often than not they raise the level particularly when they have talented players as city do.
For once, a refree did a great job if not perfect and it is disgusting to hear when steve mcMohann said that the refree killed the game after 5 minutes.
we have a good momentum now, should make the most out of it. Great to hear wenger saying that he would use a strong team at Newcastle. Exciting times ahead, for now lets bask in the joy.

    • desigunner says:

      Fair points.

It would have been a completely different game if we’d conceded in the first minute and we might even have lost a great deal of confidence. I think that save helped the team settle.

Ref was fairly decent, I’d say as good as one can be, and only a fool would say he killed the game.

  10. dne says:

Djourou is still playing for us because he was injured regulerly and not really tested. If he was uninjured, probably he would show that he is far too poor for us. I don’t think he is any better than Senderous.

    • MSL says:

Djourou is very highly rated by Wenger. He is just back from injury and had a horrible reserves game earlier. He has shown improvements and still quite rusty. Lets not rush to judgement. Wenger as stingy as he is with the money wouldn’t pay a dud. Djourou might not be our first choice but a good squad player.

      • Naylyn says:

He has definitely improved a lot since coming back from injury. I’m willing to be patient with him for a while longer, especially since he is still getting better.

      • Gunner says:

as squad or 4th choice defender, he is good enuf.. he could have been in 1st for totham, or any other team below top 6

    • Furovich says:

Realistically, I’m just happy another Arsenal player is back after a ridiculously long injury lay off. Yea he wasn’t good enough in some instances during the match but he also showed quality at other times. He’s also a big athletic guy which is good for the side.

    • desigunner says:

Well firstly I think you’re seriously underrating Senderos who has Captained his country. He was played at a young age and had issues with confidence but he was a fantastic talent.

Precisely the reason why I’m not a fan of throwing Szczesny into the deep end.

Talking about Djourou, I think he still has a lot to learn but for the fourth choice centre back he is quite good. United have Smalling, City had Boyata in that role. Djourou is way better than them and can get better.

    • naveen says:

not gonna say much on what u just said dude as the restof the guys just spoke my mind :-)

  11. munawwar says:

diaby picked up an ankle injury in warm up. or he would started instead of denilson.

    • Furovich says:

I was happy to see Denilson in the starting line up. I’m a big fan of his. His passing is quite brilliant, he has a vicious strike and he always tries to work hard. He lossed out in a couple of challenges during the match but I’m hoping he stays fit and plays a big part this season.

      • desigunner says:

Denilson has some positives to his game but he’ll have to show continuous improvement otherwise Ramsey, Wilshere and others will easily overtake him. I might even say Wilshere has already done that.

      • I am also a Denilson fan. Arsenal is far better with him in the team than Diaby, that is not to say Diaby is worse than Denilson or not, it is just Arsenal as a team is much better. But have to concede Wilshere is a better version of Denilson with a few rough edges and Ramsey is better version than both Denilson and Wilshere. Waiting for his return and fingers crossed on what he is going to be in his return.

      • FinnGun says:

Denilson made 72 successfull passes and 5 unsuccessfull – and not just backwards :)

    • desigunner says:

Thanks for that, I’d missed the news. Hope it’s not serious one as we’ve a busy schedule.

  12. drvics (mumbai gooner) says:

Great Win, wasnt it Desi and not a bad analysis either.
My 2 pence worth is as follows:
    1. Cesc is immense for us, I read the article on Untold analyzing the importance of El Captain and RVP especially when we play the top teams. The data showed that they didnt have the impact most of us would believe when it comes to winning or losing these games. But on the field the difference with Fab on it for us, the step up in class is obvious. The greatest impact is in the number of great through balls on the ground for the forwards. Without Cesc, I m sure we dont have anywhere near the number of through balls played, even in the presence of the Nasri. This is a huge, huge advantage with our pacy forwards, as was apparent within the first 5 mins of todays match.
Another aspect that Cesc brings in is the intimidation. I almost thought that he was voluntarily inviting a few tough tackles at the beginning of the match and left the ref having to make a decision early in the match about how physical he would allow th Manc’s to get. Fortunately for us, he took the decision of splashing the cards early to control the game. This influenced the City gameplan and handed us an advantage.
    2. This team has seen and played a lot of different scenarios in the tough matches over the last few years, but I think, being 1 up with a one man advantage early on in an away game, was a first. Hence the confusion after the goal today. Hope we have sorted that out now, but we need to be more proactive in reacting to this situations.
    3. Alexander Dimitri Song Billong. I must say just after the 1st goal I was shouting my lungs out for Song to keep the ball and keep it simple. His attempted to find Sagna with a curled pass, which saw the full back ending up in the ad boarding was plain immature, especially when several easier options were available. But in the 2nd half he seemed to get his act together(So much so for the myth that Le Boss isnt effective with half time talks). He still needs to work on the timing of his forward runs. He does seem to hog the attacking midfield spot a lot more than the other two midfielders.
    4. Arshavin’s critics dont know shit. He proved his worth again and did help out often (I must admit not always) in defending. I agree his is not in the best of form, but still the guy is worth the 70 mins that he plays, just because of the options he provides.
    5. Chamakh could keep RvP out. Really, he has become integral to this team.
    6. Fab is fab. Fabianski was superb. I must say I was one of the few who actually thought he was good enough to be our No. 1, if he could get his head sorted out. he still ha to continue doing what he did today on a consistent basis to prove me right, I hope he does.
    7. Deni should get more starts and game time. PLayed his role very well today.

Now lets bash Newcastle with our kiddies in the Diddly Cup and build on this confidence.

    • desigunner says:

I’m such a big Cesc fan I rate him second in the world after Messi so I won’t argue anyone who says Fabregas makes a big difference. I read those articles but I felt the stats weren’t taken in the right perspective. I mean losing against Barca away is one thing and winning at home against Porto is another. Also how do we factor stuff like the Villa game when Fabregas changed it in a 20 min Cameo. Also RvP played when we lost against Spuds but we all saw how the game changed after he came. Stats can tell us a lot but we have to look at them in the right light.

I feel Song will need a lot of time to get things right. It’s a big tactical shift and can only be refined on the field. We have to accept the mistakes as a part of the learning process. As long as he doesn’t make blunders in defence or ignores his defensive role, I’m happy with what he’s doing.

I like your view about Chamakh but a fit RvP will walk into almost any team on this planet :D

Now we have two Fabs! Didn’t realize that till you mentioned it :)

      • Yup RVP will just walk into the team :D , i cannot imagine a “Chamakh version” that could keep RVP out, that would surely be the best in the planet :D

      • IncredibleG says:

100% agreed on that Desi, Cesc is undoubtedly one of the best players in the world. His awareness is unbelievable, shown in his passing and his uncanny ability to turn his back to a player before the rest of us even realise a tackle is coming and like Messi, he has a workrate and mentality which sets him apart from almost all other top players

      • desigunner says:

SRG you’re talking about a dream striker :)

  13. arsenalMax says:

: The last word of your article should be detractors not distractors.

  14. oracle says:

Great performance and a great result. Tonight is celebration night but tomorrow Wenger and the team should lookm at the video again more soberly and objectively and identify areas for possible improvement. The team has to improve tremendously if we are to sustain the title challenge. Perhaps the three points were more important than the performance. For me the performance against chelsea in parts of the second half was better than today’s. There were some nervous moments. I don’t like that in games of this magnitude.
When the first choice central defence is back from injury and Van Persie is fully recovered some teams will suffer terribly against this side. Given the tempo and intnsity shown today over ninty minutes Wenger needs to really rotate his team because some will soon burn out.

    • LondonGunner says:

As you said tonight is the night to celebrate am gonna stick with that, I will leave the rest to Arsene.
A great win Nasri was by far the best player today, left right and center he just roamed like a lion in the Savannah.
Chamakh has earned us so many free kicks and crucial penalties I lost count.

    • desigunner says:

The big difference in my opinion is that Chelsea were sitting on a lead and never really tried to put pressure on us. City were trying hard to get a goal. Obviously, we would look more in control in the first case than the second.

All teams have some nervous moments. Chelsea had some even against Wolves! We should not expect us to boss the game all the time especially against the big teams.

Of course, I have no doubt Arsene will look at the game again and will find ways of improving but as fans I think we need to accept some shaky moments as part of the deal.

  15. Wilsheres dad says:

Besides some great individual performances today the most heartening thing I noticed was that in the second half the team played with a restrained, measured confidence. Rather than the gung-ho attacking that we’ve often seen in the past, they wer’nt in a rush to score a second goal & so kept possession & controlled the game better.Even though it was against 10 men they looked like they knew exactly what they were doing as a team, which isn’t always the case.

    • desigunner says:

That’s a valid point. In the first half there was a bit of confusion and too many players were trying to run forward in search of the second. In the second half we had a lot more composure and Arsene must have given some good advice at half-time.

      • naveen says:

cant agree more dude… i guess thats where denilson came in the picture as he was being the extra man…sometimes the simplest of things do make a big difference :-)

Injured players slowly coming back and slowly comming into form

I think We will see the following team on Wed:

    Schzney
    Gibbs

    Koschielny
    Djourou/Squillaci?
    Denilson
    Lansbury
    Jay Emmanual Thomas/Diaby?
    Walcott
    Rosicky
    Bendtner/Vela?

    What a strong team.

  19. Furovich says:

How good is it to experience such a win. What it could do for the teams confidence. Watching the way they play, and their goal celebrations, the team harmony looks as fantastic as ever and was beautiful to see. Nasri is in exceptional form this season and is great to see him scoring goals. Can’t wait for RVP to get back and Walcott to get 100%. The possibilities are actually quite scary. I wonder what Wenger will do with Chamakh and RVP when they are both available. Surely both of them will have to feature in the staring 11…

    • desigunner says:

To be honest I’m really trying to avoid thinking about the scenario of what happens when others come back. Not that it’s wrong, I’m just afraid of jinxing the thing.

If RvP is fit I see him in the central role, Chamakh will play on the right or will get a much deserved rest and both will be rotated.

      • desigunner says:

oops I just did what I didn’t want to do!

      • santori says:

        …………..Chamakh…………….

Playing Chamakh out wide will be a waste.

      • Metalhead says:

You’re right about Chamakh and RVP playing together. RVP up front with Chamakh as the support striker just behind him will be the best formation according to me.

  20. Nischit says:

“Arshavin isn’t in the team for donkey work”. Truer words have not been written. Arshavin is a special player much like messi, ronaldo et al. Maybe not as consistently special as them, but still, a player capable of producing something out of nothing. He’s a little lazy for my liking, but as long as he keeps producing assists/goals, I’m happy to keep him in the team. Did make an important interception though to rob Micah Richards.

Glad to see Fabianski performing to his best. I wouldn’t be too quick in judging him though. Its only been a few games. I hope he keeps his perfect streak going for much much longer!!

Djourou was really shaky today imo. He looks like he’s still finding his feet after such a long time out but he fared ok today considering the quality of the opposition. Djourou as our 4th choice cb shows how much AW has improved our defence this year. Kos and SS18 have proved to be astute buys toughening up our soft center a bit.

I thought clichy was excellent defensively for the most part.

We looked very edgy until Song’s goal, but for some reason I was confident. Partly cos mancity were having a woeful game.

    • desigunner says:

I agree about Fabianski. We should just show him he has the support and then let him do his thing. No need to rush into judgments, even positive ones, or to pile on expectations.

On the whole I think our defenders deal with balls into the box much better. Djourou looked shaky but much better than Boyata, Smalling and others. I’m happy he is getting a few games and hasn’t made any major errors.

I guess all teams look a bit shaky when the opposition has a go. We can’t change it that much. I’m happy we didn’t succumb to the pressure.

      • Nischit says:

I meant to say Djourou looked off the pace in one on one situations. He committed far too easily, was outmuscled too many times. He just looks not completely fit. The Djourou I remember ( or I think that lad’s name was Djourou ) was fast, and strong in the challenge. Although, after typing that out, I feel I’m being too harsh on him ;)

    • Manav says:

I’m sure you wouldn’t have missed that tackle Arshavin made on a marauding Tevez. It should be the tackle of his life (considering he frowns upon the idea that tackling skills are an integral aspect of a complete footballer’s arsenal). It was a very important tackle.

  21. Arsenal4 says:

    Really appreciated the 3 points!

That’s all matter. Whether we’ll win with 11 that’s another discussion when citeh come to Ems.
What a pay back from last year. A thumping 3-0, in the process Citeh fans got to watch some slow and dour football (for Arsenal standard)and even making Fabianski like a superstar keeper. It’s like the 50k citeh fans came to the stadium to watch Arsenal practice. LOL.

On the game, Arsenal should’ve won 5-7 nil. I thought we did brilliantly on keeping the ball and the tempo of the game . However, against 10 me some running so Cesc can thread the ball is highly appreciated , or clinical finishes (just like being showcased in Donetsk match).

I was nervous when we’re still 1-0, I guess the Chelsea, WBA & Sundland game got into me. Looking back, i don’t think citeh has any chance at all.
If one thing we should’ve done better, we should’ve killed this kind of game as early as possible.

    Say Arsenal three nil!

    • desigunner says:

LOL, yeah it must have been an eye opener for City fans. I read some of their blogs before the game and some were taking a win for granted while many felt they had the better team.

It’s a difficult balance. If we go forward too much then we could concede at the back. If we don’t then it’s edgy. We could have scored the penalty and later on a chance for Denilson that Boateng poked away. That would have made if 5-0 even with the way we played. Also City never threw numbers forward and played like cowards for large parts.

      • santori says:

City fans…they’re back in their proper place (for now at least)

Thought they had already qualified for CL did they? What a laugh.

  22. Ajinkya says:

Good game. Song attacked and defended well. Denilson ran the game in the background.Good to have Fabregas back. Do we have Wilshere available next week? Bit shaky defense, but we have Vermaelen and Kosci out. But Sagna was solid, we need to excuse him for putting bad crosses because he defends really well. Good job on David Silva, the guy is a real threat.
Will the real Andrey Arshavin please stand up?
Pundits as always say we wouldn’t have won if there was no red card. Usual reactions, Fabianski’s saves were ‘routine’. Who cares, eh?
    Manchester City 0 – 3 Arsenal.
Two centre backs and Van Persie to go.

    • desigunner says:

Wilshere will miss the Carling Cup and the next League game. Koscielny was on bench tonight, hopefully he will be ready next week.

Do you remember the cross Djourou put over the bar? It was Sagna. I think he can put in good crosses if he has the targets.

Silva looks like a real talent. I was not sure he will succeed in England but he seems to have adapted well.

    • santori says:

      Don’t forget Rambo.

      • AnonymousGun says:

Not taking anything from him, but if he was to explode back into the scene, next season is a more of a valid target for him. He will need to be eased in into the team back slowly.. TR7 sat out for long, and still cant play week in week out yet.. Eddy didnt managed, and Diaby took almost 2 years before fully back in the team.

  23. Arun says:

Fabianski- My MOTM. he is getting better and better. With Fabianski in such a great form, there is no way in for Almunia.
I lost my count when I was counting the contribution of Chamakh (directly or indirectly)
Did anyone missed Jack last night. I did. More than a few times. I thought we could ve got the second goal before half time, had Jack was there.

    • desigunner says:

We could have scored the second if Fab put the penalty in :) But I get your point. Undoubtedly, Wilshere adds a little more to the game but I was happy with the way Denilson let everything flow.

      • Arun says:

S..It was so heartening to see Denny back. He proved to be the extra man in the 11-10 men advantage we had. He was there available for the pass everytime someone was closed down or running out of options. Kept the game flowing.

  24. james says:

as usual, I’m back here to praise one person: Chamakh, oh Chamakh, why didn’t you show your face when we needed you last season.

The Moroccan is quite simply the best part of Adebayor we never saw, and the fact that he actually has quality and doesn’t live offisde/miss chances in the most horrid of ways.

My MenOTM: Nasri (definitely) and Chamakh (for always putting a quality work rate and getting people sent off and winning penalties and ‘diving’ lol, now lets cross more balls for him to head in).

I used to love RVP but honestly, I don’t know if we should be building the front around him again…

    • santori says:

Point is we have options now.

      Didn’t Bendy finish well?

    • Arun says:

I think Wenger is building the front three around Chamakh. When there is no RVP so far this season, how can Wenger build an attack around him. Bendy is an interesting option. Either of Chamakh or Bendy are both same type of players. So building the attack around them will be easy. Wenger can rotate them as he wants.

    • desigunner says:

Chamakh gives us more flexibility and variations. If RvP and Chamakh are fit we can really mix things up and opponents will have a hard time. If RvP doesn’t stay fit we’ll still have good options in Chamakh and Bendtner. Overall we are beginning to look like a strong attacking team.

  25. santori says:

    Good win.

It sets us up well psychologically.

    1) We can beat the big teams (Granted City were down to 10)but we showed patience and maturity in killing them off.

    2) Nasri. Whether Fabregas gets tempted to leave again next summer, it can only augur well for the future that the Frenchman is stepping up.

3)Defensively although we had some shaky moments, I thought we did well considering Squid and Djourou are our second pairing in CB. Clichy made some errors but also some good intercepts. On balance a relative improvement.

    4) Fabianski. Let’s hope he keeps growing because he put in a really impressive shift today.

Now to keep focus, not get complacent and start clawing back the lead Chelsea have.:)

    • desigunner says:

I’d still like to see a good win over United or Chelsea. City are very good but just one level below I feel.

Agree with you about Nasri, Fabianski and Defence. Clichy made an excellent block from Adebayor in the final minutes.

  26. Aniruddh says:

You’ve covered all the points really well and like to share few observations I feel Mancini lost city the game as he failed to use the width of the pitch nearly as well as anyone facing us would like,as we all know how we struggle against wingplay if a lumbering centreback in Richards can cause us so much trouble imagine what Andy Johnson would’ve done to cliche and co. also he should have used David Silva in a more central role as he seems to lack the pace to beat players out wide. overall I feel we coped with city very well and Boyata had it coming if you saw his recent games against Chelsea and Newcastle where he got off with some pretty bad challenges and with the commentary team lauding his rugby-esque tackles as intelligent football.
p.s It’s good to see how your blog’s growing in popularity.

    • Gunner says:

actually, i do agree with u. we are stronger in the middle then on the flanks. if man c fully utilizes their wingers, we will be in alot more trouble. of coz, when man c is down to 10 man, it will be harder for them to use the wings coz they will be out number in the centre. so. it is inconclusive..:D

      • Manav says:

If you think they missed Adam Johnson, imagine the damage Theo would’ve done had he started. He likes drifting in when he reaches the edge of the box and I don’t think a guy as slow as Yaya Toure could’ve done much to stop him.

      • Manav says:

Boateng is big, strong and fast but not quite as swift in twisting & turning (as Chamakh proved).

    • desigunner says:

I guess Johnson could have come in for Milner or Silva, that would have meant either less work rate and defensive work i.e Milner or less guile i.e Silva.

Also agree with Gunner above, with 10 men it’s difficult to have a guy like Johnson who might not do such a decent job defensively and against Arsenal that would leave the team exposed.

  27. Tim says:

City fans bleating on about the red card is pointless. If Boyata let Chamakh go, odds are he scores and then that transforms the game.

It took us a while to really get control of the game, but I was impressed with how we stood up physically to City’s big team – and they are HUGE, like Chelsea – and kept playing our game.

Nasri was outstanding. He is already staking a strong claim to be our player of the season. Chamakh too – he didn’t score, but he worked tirelessly throughout.

    http://thearmchairsportsfan.com/2010/10/25/arsenal-show-steel-to-defeat-10-man-city/

    • desigunner says:

We did deal with the physical presence well but considering they were down to 10, I’d say it was relatively easier for us. Would love to see us do the same against Chelsea at home.

  28. jeremy says:

Arsenal now have seven points from their last four away games at Blackburn, Sunderland, Chelsea and Manchester City –

a massive seven, since we picked nothing from those fixtures last year.

    • desigunner says:

Excellent point. In fairness, we did lose 5 (WBA and Liverpool) but I’m happy we are doing better in away games. Let’s get the home form back to the levels of last year and this can turn into something special.

  29. afrogoon says:

great write up as always desie…….a win up ‘norf’ against the a super top four member that The Arse are ‘just not good enough’ against……..happy days….happy days…….I gotta say i thought Fabz was and has been immense ever since he got a run in the side…..long may his form continue………i smell a sweet aroma coming over my shoulder from the kitchen……..mmmmmmhhhhhhhh…..humble pie…..a lot of gooners just might get bloated by all that pie….long may it continue.

  30. Raghugovind says:

A Great Victory without doubt !!! But there is still one thing that bothers me . Nobody goes for goal when there is half a chance of doing. Almost on 3-4 occasions in the second half our players were clean through on goal but instead of shooting they decided to PASS !! That still irritates me !! If we had not won by a huge margin we would have seriously rued those missed chances !! Else it was a gr8 game to watch !! Had fun !!

    • Manav says:

Even if we had converted 1 of those 3 chances (when we succumbed to overdoing) by having a quick go at Hart, the scoreline would’ve been an even more emphatic 4-0. I guess it’s in our DNA now, this ‘pass, pass, pass’ habit. I don’t feel like I should complain much about it. The players understand it as well as anyone of us.

    • desigunner says:

I can relate to your feelings and have tried to cover this in today’s article.

  31. Manav says:

“He has to improve his reading of the game and the way he stands.”

DG kindly clarify what you meant by ‘…the way he stands’. Are you referring to his stance in set pieces?

    • Manav says:

^^^ this is with reference to the Swiss Guard. :-)

    • desigunner says:

What I mean is that he is a bit square on instead of side-on. That sounds like Cricket but I’m talking about Djourou :D

I thought he was facing the opposition goal on some occasions when he should have been facing our left touch-line. That way it’s easier to run backwards covering the run down the left channel. It’s just a matter of one extra step but often that makes all the difference.

  32. Hong_gunner says:

It was an awesome game. I don’t want to go into the game details very much as I’m on too much weed and alcohol, but here’s my 3pointer:
    1. Fabianski looked class. my consistent support behind him is starting to show colors. but I’m not being haste to call him next to Buffon and Casiallas. and the back-line midfield synchronisation was stunning. Djourou was a little bit rusty, but was awesome. I won’t go into as much detail as his ‘way of standing’ as I believe even Wenger won’t be talking about a player’s gait. Sagna shows why we need him, Denilson showed good intelligence and awareness all game and played little neat simple passes all the while, what was required of him. Cesc brings the guile into the team no one else can match. Nasri is finally adjusting to switching between the flanks and through the middle of the park so naturally, and he is such an intelligent player – he’ll only get better. Chamakh was very good in his overall play, but needs to use his body a bit more to create shooting chances for himself. Arshavin did his job well. his job ain’t to help Clichy. its the midfield’s. and that showed how Arshavin’s intelligent positioning in the attacking third can help while we defend. was mighty close from where I was sitting the 1st half, and followed him all game.
    2. there’s be questions about the sending off helping us thing, and I won’t lie to myself, it did make things a little easy. but we could have been 1-0 up before the sending off came along(only for Arsha being adjudged offside when he wasn’t). we composure when we had the ball, showed mettle when we missed the spot kick, and showed patience when we needed to hold onto the ball and got the 3rd to put the dagger to the heart. I won’t jump to say we’ll be winning the league by mid-Feb, but we are back. psychologically, against a ‘big team’(still feels strange to call City by that), but we are back. and let the party roll all night long. Cheers!!!

    • desigunner says:

Have clarified the stance statement above.

Sagna is an extremely underrated player. Most managers will kill to have a right back like him.

Playing against 10 men can be tricky. We have not done too badly when we’ve been down to 10. So Arsenal deserve credit for making full use of the opportunity.

I agree with you, it’s time to be happy but not to take success for granted.

  33. Kushagra India says:

Gr8 rite up desi I believe Arshavin seems to have serious fitness issues he should be rotated with Rosicky more often.

Finnish Hit le-grove.co.uk is another gr8 blog

  34. SingaporeGoonert says:

once again Arshavin was instrumental in the first (crucial) goal. nutmegging one of the most expensive BPL player in his assist. it was a world class goal ~ just 2 gunners in the box. it didnt matter if city had 15 or 51 men on the field.

i totally agree that Arshavin should not be doing the donkey work. Clichy shd leave the upfield play to him and man his own ground.

its a huge shame that another blogger labelled Arshavin “USELESS”. what an idiot!

  35. Fikadu says:

It was the best win of the season so far. Now, what is important is wining the next 5 games and make the likes of City, Totinham out of the competition while closing on Chelsea so that the real competition could be between the three.
