Stupid Is As Gallas Does?

When Arsenal failed to reach an agreement with Gallas I was not really concerned. The Frenchman, while a very good defender, has had more than his fair share of problems both on and off the field. In fact, I was a bit annoyed when Toure left and Gallas stayed as I saw the former as an Arsenal man and a much better player. Anyway, all that’s water under the bridge.

I think Wenger set a deadline for Gallas and that passed, probably before the World Cup. Arsene would have wanted to be certain about his first choice central defenders and so the early move for Koscielny made sense.

It wasn’t a bit surprising that Gallas was struggling to find a new club. His injury problems are fairly well known and his contract demands have been equally big. Even then I’d a feeling some club in Europe will be willing to pay a big salary for a star on the wane. We’ve seen that quite often in the past.

When news of his transfer to the Tiny Totts came up, I just laughed. It seemed like good old ‘Arry was up to his usual wheeling and dealing. I was also amused by the thought that Spuds will be stuck with another injury prone central defender. At that point I was wondering who in their right minds would give Gallas a two year or longer contract on insane wages.

Then came the big surprise as Redknapp mentioned that Gallas was on a one year deal. He also said that the Frenchman was on less money than he was at Arsenal. That, I must confess, was a real shock. What was William Gallas thinking?!

He’s moved from a big club to a Tiny one for a deal that was worse than what was offered to him. In all likelihood he will end up below Arsenal in the League table and will also have a poor Champions League campaign. That’s right, he seems to have lost on all fronts. Perhaps, the only gain for him might be that at Spuds he might end up as one of the better outfield players. And he might actually pick up a Carling Cup medal.

I’m ready to acknowledge the fact that Gallas might have his own reasons and I don’t really know what’s going on in his head or life. Having said that, I’m also willing to stick my neck out and say that his greed and stupidity have put him in this situation. That’s just me speculating and I’d be happy to listen to a counter argument.

Ultimately, Gallas joins a list of players who’ve undervalued what they had at Arsenal and made a poor choice of moving on. There is a good chance his career could also end up in obscurity from this point on.

One aspect that surprises me a lot is that some Arsenal fans tend to put a lot of the blame on the manager’s shoulders and on the club. Arsenal should’ve offered Gallas a two year deal, we should have given Flamini what he wanted, and so on. Very few actually say that these players are making the wrong choices.

Arsene has often talked about keeping the squad together and there is no doubt in my mind that we will get better if our players stop leaving. The club extended the contracts of 16-17 players last season (not sure of the exact number). Obviously, majority of the players had the sense to do the right thing. Fabregas’ extension also made it easy for us to give Farcelona the finger.

In big games familiarity amongst team mates can make a difference, especially when a team likes to play a fluid game like we do. It’s not difficult to understand why Arsene doesn’t like the idea of bringing in more than three outfield players during a transfer window.

If our players stick together they will achieve the success they deserve and I hope Gallas will serve as the latest example of stupid decision making that will help us keep the squad intact.

Poor Ar2ena1. Still actually thinking they’re a big club while they’re sinking faster than the Titanic. Gallas has left a club that folds when the going gets tough, who get humilated regularly in the CL and make up the numbers in the competition. Meanwhile King Harry has signed him up to lead us to finish 20 points clear of Basil Fawlty’s spent force and claim our place where we rightfully belong – above Ar2ena1.And when you lose to North London’s most prestigous club – the mighty THFC 3-0 at the dump of yours later this year,Ar2ena1′s ship will have finally sank. Let me see Pennypinching Arsene has signed:

Chamakh – poor man’s Bendtner and couldn’t hit a barn door. The Next Francis Jeffers?

    Koscielny – Exactly who?

Squirrelwhatshisname – Too old and the next Silvestre.

WHAT would you know about that exactly?!? when the FRAK have you even PLAYED in the champions league?!? Arsenal makes up the nos.?!? Dude YOUR CLUB makes up the nos in LONDON…don’t even talk about europe. And everyone knows harry even only came to spurs after checking out every other which would not have him. That should tell you what your place on the totem pole is…! You want to talk about chamakh? When your strikers are defoe and CROUCH?!? Seriously….take a minute to think about that…CROUCH?!? Who’s he exactly…the poor man’s Marlon Harewood?!? And wasn’t it your IDIOT club that sold off both defoe and Keane at the same time….and then BOUGHT THEM BACK FOR A HIGHER PRICE?!? That was bleeding hilarious man…Your entire squad couldn’t make our carling cup team….hell you couldn’t even make our under-15s. Don’t let a few freak wins bloat your head. Even a broken clock tells the right time like 2wice a day. You’re speaking out of your CLASS mate…but hey I know how you could actually win SOMETHING for once. Get relegated…and then get relegated again. And once again. And challenge for 4th place in the 3rd division or something…hahahaha….And oh yeah…Gallas. 33 year old crybaby who lost the captian’s armband to Cesc cos he couldn’t stop bawling all the damn time. Good riddance. Now we’ll have a real no 10.

Forever in are european shadow, facts are villus now playing with better defenders, king Dawson, bale,tv well overrated and go’s walkabout,he can’t cope with drogba unlike are leadley,he’s NEVER scored vrs spurs from open play when are leadleys playing.tv got raped last year(nothing to do with wenger this time)by drogba.

  11. RedGunner says:

Haha! Dirty Yid fans have nothing better to do than read Arsenal blogs.

It’s the same story every year with you boys… “It’s our year”. It’s never going to happen and when Bale gets injured your going to be fucked. He’s carried your team for the first two games.

Have fun with Gallas aswell, he hasn’t been wanted for a while now. Good luck!

  12. Nischit says:

desi, Do you think AW will sign someone other than squillaci? There are reports of juan and someone else I cant remember. I think he’ll be a good signing, although I’m slightly concerned about his fitness. I bet the medical staff are putting him through a rigorous medical today.

Gallas woulda been a good backup and woulda saved SAW the trouble of going out and getting squillaci, but I’m sure Gallas would never be prepared to warm the bench. He was slipping as a player last season, and koscielny seems much faster and more composed on the ball than Gallas.

I actually liked gallas and his attitude. I feel he was very unfairly treated, although, he did crack up at certain points and get over zealous. Too bad he joined the tinies. I cant wait to see chamakh/rvp tear him apart..

    • desigunner says:

I read rumours about Juan and Ciani but I seriously doubt we will get another out and out central defender. If it were a more versatile defensive player I’d have given some credibility to the reports.

Gallas was a fighter and hated losing. That was the good thing about him but he had far too many negatives.

who really cares? why devote some much time on someone who most (if not all) Gooners won’t lose sleep over. He’s a footballer who wanted to get the best deal before he retires. Can’t/don’t blame him.

    • elkieno says:

Andy: Best comment I have read so far…
funniest was the deluded spurs fan talking shyte…
Gallas will be just like Ade and sit on the bench then regret leaving mighty Arsenal…

  15. Goonerkhan says:

To Spuds fans, what was funnier! losing in your first ever game in the Champions League or to the team called Young Boys!!

  16. Dhruv says:

I would not be surprised if he realized that there were not that many takers. His team had an abysmal World Cup and he had been flagged as injury prone. Most importantly I think most clubs would have been put off by his infamous temperament. You cannot under value what a player like that can do to the morale and harmony in the dressing room.
In hindsight, it is such a pity we lost Toure because of him. Toure would have been the senior defender we needed now to blood in all the youngsters.
Given the terms of the deal being one year and a lower wage packet , I am sure he could have picked from a number of other clubs who would have matched that sort of deal. I would not be surprised if Gallas picked the spurs to stick it to the Arsenal (either that or he was too lazy to get up and move house). I am pretty sure the fact that most gooners do not really care has got to grate :) .

  17. SouthAfricanGooner says:

@ superior spurs. are u tiny tots serious? u think we’re shedding a tear over william gallas? hahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha wow! thanks guys i needed that! as 4 being humiliated in the champions league. which 1 is this ur talking about? coz u can’t b talkin about the 1 that u lot are not in EVERY FREAKIN season! ya u must b talkin about another champions league that exsists only in your head coz the 1 that gets played in a little place called the REAL world-we do just fine in. don’t believe me? Try 1 final, 1 semi & 2 q/finals since 2006. & the boys from shit hart lane? oh yes i 4got u boys aint even smelt it. tell me 1 thing o’budy o’pal seeing as u lot made so much noise last season about finishing 4th(hahahahahaha sori had 2 laugh there again) wat was keeping u guys going all these years? was it the knowledge that at least u shared a part of town with 1 of the biggest & best clubs in the world? thats it isn’t it?

  18. jp says:

I would think that Gallas did not act on our contract offer because his ego was inflated and he thought he could get all that he demanded earlier this summer. Time has gone on and he had no club offering what he wanted and had to take the Spuds offer. He rolled the dice and came up trumps. Good Riddance. Another bad decision in a long line of Arsenal wantaways. (Hleb is still suffering, Flamini struggling, etc,etc etc)

    • Nischit says:

Either that or he just wanted to leave arsenal and the only thing that’d make him stay was fattening his wallet. Either way..not a big loss.

  19. Jaygooner says:

Twichy ‘Arry called it a “no brainer” getting Billy the Blag on a freebie. He was spot on, because “no brainer” Gallas seems to think he has joined a team capable of winning the Premiership. I sincerely hope the Spuds qualify by beating the Older Boys in the 2nd Leg, then let’s see how great hahaha they are when playing Premier League, Championships League, Premier League, in quick succession, with only ONE half fit decent player in the entire squad. I cannot wait to see the DVD.

  20. Imran says:

The garbage truck picked up something at the Emirates and disposed it at headquarters. that will surely stink up Shite Hart Lane even more this year.

  21. simms21 says:

Haha spurs fans crawling out of the woodwork like cockroaches.

I bet he is regretting the greed, dude was 33! Players need to get better agents and not have some idiot talking in your ear trying to get a last payday out of them.

So long Gallas you were unappreciated in your early days but eventually became a nuisance.

  22. aravindvr says:

poor old Billy found Arsenal are far above his standards…
So moved down many levels to the Schoolboy club Spuds.

    He has his own reasons…
may be he can get new friends in his Sunday morning teams treatment table…

Anyway we got our team’s spirits back and our famed No:10 jersey, now belongs to a deserving player….

    Great riddance by Wenger….

Hope Billy will be available and leading all Spuds in their pompous 50th anniversary celebrations of ‘nothing@hand’ at ShiteHartLane…

  23. terry says:

we should get cani and melo/diarra…then we would be serious title contenders…

its very obivious why wenger is not going for players between the age group of 22-28…. coz he has high hopes from the younger playres….

he probably is thinking norvidth and bartley will step into the first team in the next 2 seasons…

    same goes with def mid….

thats the reason he is gone for the french guy who is 30 yrs

  24. SomeRandomGunner says:

I think it is a blessing in disguise that both Gallas and Sol did not take Arsenal’s offer and we end up with much better defenders and our whole squad looks much stronger and deeper.
Though it is early days i am very impressed with Koscielny who is better than Gallas i would say better than Vermaelen too. Squillaci must easily be better than Sol.
And Djourou or even Nordtveit must be better than Slyvestre. Like you , I am also not too worried about the goal keepers. With the this set of defenders and more defensive awareness from our midfield we should be better than last year.
I would not say a league title is guaranteed as soon as you have got a great squad.
Indeed it is exciting time for Arsenal i feel we can actually mount a serious challenge on FA cup even with a second tier team similar to last season.
For sure we have a better FA cup squad.
    In defense
if we field our total second choice CBs which i guess will be Djourou and Squillaci which certainly does not seem bad at all.
Our full backs, leaving out the first choice we will have Eboue and Gibbs certainly good enough.
Midfield i guess will be Song Denilson Wilshere or Denilson Diaby Wilshere. Our forward line would be Walcott Chamakh Vela.

    —————— Fabianski/Mannone/Sczesny———

    ——- Eboue — Djourou — Squillaci — Gibbs —-

    ————– Denilson — Diaby ——————-

    ———————Wilshere————————

    ——–Walcott—————————-Vela——

    ———————Chamakh————————-

With a bench mostly consisting of

Rosicky, Cesc, Nasri, Koscielny, RVP, Almunia

I do not really think any other team has so much depth, note i left Vermaelen out of the bench too :D .

    What a time to be a gooner……….

    • desigunner says:

I think the Cup run will depend on injuries and how many home games we get. That Cup team looks good but away games are quite tricky, especially against the thug teams who give a bit extra in the Cups as they know thats their only hope of silverware.

  25. supasam8 says:

i found it interesting that you left out all the unrest billy left behind him in the dressing room. i’ve never really liked him, but i think it was a good decision to leave. who he left to go too, well.. that’s another, terribly sad story.

but if he left for less money i believe it was down to feeling left out of the squad, i’ll be honest, as a fan of samir (a month better go quick!) i think william is an absolute dummy! he’ll find more friends at spurs though, closer to his IQ level.

  26. OnDGooner says:

The one striking mistake Arsene made was to have appointed him Captain over Gilberto & Toure and allowed Toure to leave instead of that big bad wolfie named gallas!!!
