I’m delighted Spain won the World Cup. As I’ve often said in the past, along with Argentina, they are the team I most like to watch. And for once there can be no arguments the best team won the championship.
I can understand that people find the behaviour of Barcelona players and management to be despicable. Even I’ve no respect for some of the Spanish players but I try not to let that affect my judgement of their football. After all, Spain (along with Barcelona) are probably the only team that is actually winning big trophies with positive, entertaining football.
In a world where the Sith Lord of Anti-Football is seen by many as the best manager it’s always good to see real football surviving and succeeding.
With that out of the way let’s focus on the Final. I thought Spain were much better than the Dutch and deserved the victory on the balance of play. It might have been different if Robben had taken his chances but it could just as easily have been different if the ref had sent De Jong off for a Kung-Fu kick.
Leaving the ifs and buts out, it’s not difficult to see that Holland went into the game with a similar game plan that had worked for them in the tournament so far. Their hope for scoring came from set-pieces, a freak Sneijder strike or a Robben run. They never came close from the first two but Robben had a couple of glorious opportunities. The Dutchman continued his sitter-missing form and the Oranje eventually paid the price for their tactics.
Spain have been positive in the tournament but they’ve also played with caution. Starting with Alonso and Busquets has been a tactical choice that ensured they had better defensive balance. The flip side was that they found it difficult to break the well organised Dutch defence. Apart from a few half chances from set-pieces they didn’t really create much till Fabregas came on the pitch.
It was a clear decision to shift the focus from balance to attack as Alonso’s creative contribution was negligible. I’ve a feeling Del Bosque didn’t back his team to win on penalties. Spain looked a far more threatening side after Fabregas came on.
Cesc had the opportunity to put his name down in history but was thwarted by Stekelenburg when through on goal. A pass might have been a better option. He also came close with a driving run through the middle. Finally he picked up an assist with a neat little ball that set up Iniesta, who was probably the best player in the tournament.
To me it’s obvious why Guardiola wants him at Barca. It’s not to have him on the bench as a backup but as the final piece in creating an attacking juggernaut that can crush the likes of Mourinho. Among the present midfielders at Barca only Iniesta has something extra-special in the attacking third and Fabregas will clearly add to that.
Van Persie was the other Arsenal player on show and I was happy with his performance. He covered the most distance for the Dutch and put in an unselfish, hardworking display that some of his teammates must learn from. In the end RvP completed more passes than Kuyt and Robben and that shows how poor and individualistic the Dutch were in the attacking areas. You really would expect the wingers to complete more passes. I can hardly remember Van Persie getting any service in or around the box.
Further proof of their defensive tactics can be seen from the fact that once again the Keeper completed the most number of passes and he was followed by a central defender and two full backs. Sneijder is a fantastic player but his talents in the middle are quite limited compared to his Spanish counterparts. Once Robben failed to emulate Milito, Sneijder didn’t look all that good.
Mourinho was lucky in the Champions League and that made him a tactical genius. Wonder if the same will be said about Van Marwijk who used similar tactics to get to the final. From what I’ve heard so far the Dutch have been criticized for the way they’ve played. Well, the mediamen only support the winners so Holland are sure to receive some flak. They’ve would have been brilliant if they’ve won with the same tactics but losers don’t get any respect in this world. It’s a real shame that right or wrong and good or bad is based on the final result and not on the actual display on the pitch.
Finally, it’s great to see two of our best players reach the highest level at the international stage. It’s even better that almost all our players are coming back from the World Cup without serious injury worries. I guess we won’t see Fabregas or Van Persie during the early weeks of the preseason but that is an acceptable loss. Hopefully Van Persie will come back hungrier than ever and the Cesc saga will be resolved amicable and in favour of Arsenal. It’ll be good to have a World Cup winner as Captain.

Agree with u there, that Fabregas was the difference between the 2 sides when he came on. Xavi doesn’t even try shooting towards the goal when he has opportunities , at least Cesc does that. Btw, I read on the daily Mirror that Wenger & Gazidis has managed to avoid Sandro Rossell in South Africa . Kudos to them, hopefully Cesc will stay with us.
This blog reports that Wenger actually met Rossell and told him to stuff it. Brilliant.

Shame Cesc didn’t come on earlier. Unfortunately for Barca his impact on the game has increased his value by £10 million.Ha ha!!!
He He, most expensive assist in the history of football!
Their football is admirable but i just cant stand those bastards for Spain. They are interchangable for Barcelona, the very club who as a gooner you should hate no matter what.
I disagree that the best team won the WC, imo Germany played much better football and deserved the trophy…if only Muller (who imo was one of the players of the tournament) hadnt been suspended because of a ridiculous yellow card against Argentina. Booked for a hand ball after a protest by the argies and the fact that Messi handled it not 2 seconds before completely overlooked.
Stu I agree with you on Muller and Argentina crying for a handball when quite literally as you stated was a hand ball by the Argentina player a second before. I don’t want to say Spain is not a good team because that is obviously ignorant but I disagree with the author stating that they were the best team. A great team yes, but I also think Muller would have had an impact on the semi. All in all though a terrific tourny
I agree that Spain were not the best team at the tournament. Imho I believe that had Spain come up against Brazil at any point of the competition they would have gone home. They did however have the most talented players but this is different to being the best team. Of course I am already proven wrong by the fact that Spain came out winners but they were really just the team that got the better side of the coin when it came to terrible calls throughout the tournament. Howard is a laugh. Red card for zero contact? In any Arsenal game why don’t we see 8 yellows for the other team? I watch that physicality every week against Arsenal and Howard doesn’t mind letting them go then. He was in Xavi’s pocket. (Shudders) It makes me sick even thinking about Xavi (Shudders) getting a world cup winners medal. If only Robben gave the slightest care in the world to his nation rather than going for glory all the time we would have a player who is surely going to finish his career at Arsenal with a winners medal.
Well, De Jong wasn’t sent off for a Kung-Fu kick, Robben wasn’t given the second yellow for kicking the ball away (xavi was booked for the same offence) and Van Bommel didn’t get a second booking even after multiple fouls. All in all I can’t see how the Dutch can complain. 28 fouls – 8 bookings … it’s not that difficult to understand.
@Phil, Agree somewhat.
Spain were marginally better but there was not much in it to be honest. It could have swung either way.
As Desi says though, in the end, I think Holland (Robben) paid a price for being too individualistic.
I thought the Left wing was particularly poor. Was calling for Elia but he didn’t seem to make much of a diff. Instead everything came Robben’s way and he was constantly surrounded by 3 players.
OTOH, Fab was great and the other player on the Spanish side that really caught my eye was Jesus Navas.
Damm that Octopus is good.
Time to ask the octopus about the Cesc transfer! lol
I’d rather eat him and get his psychic powers!!
guys check what cesc said of rvp
http://www.monstersandcritics.com/news/europe/news/article_1570094.php/Fabregas-feels-with-Arsenal-team-mate-van-Persie
and i quote this line from the source
“‘He is a great guy and a great leader and he has been really unlucky with injuries and I really hope that he can have his moment next year and hopefully he can win something.’” – cesc
check out “have his moment next year and hopefully he can win something”
why is cesc referring to winning trophy as “he” and not “we”?
and “next year” means epl or CL… means ARSENAL and not Holland…
does this mean Cesc is leaving and out of joy he accidentally leaked it to us?
oh god..
Hopefully that’s just because he was thinking of RvP as an opponent rather than a teammate.
Well I agree that Spain weren’t the best side in the tournament. And for all their pretty passing, the thing I’ll remember most about them is their rolling on the floor in agony trying to get opponents sent off. Torres v Chile, Capdevila v Portugal, and I have no clue why Heitinga was sent off. De Jong should have gone, but so could have Puyol. In any case, I couldn’t see Barcelona lift the World Cup, and shut the tv after the final whistle.
Excellent summary although I’m still a bit disappointed for Holland, (as for Forlan on Saturday!).
I was not completely shocked by the Dutch plan to break up the Wenger-ball of Spain – they could not allow a repeat of the German match! Some of their fouls were attrocious but by the same token the ‘acting’ of the opposition in trying to win advantages was certainly as bad. At one point late in the match 3 players, including Fab, went down as if they’d been shot near/in the edge of the Dutch area.
I can only hope that in addition to the ‘camera’ on the goal line they employ a 5th official to review TV replays, feed the info’ back to the ref for ‘delayed’ action and get this play-acting/off ball & missed horror tackles out of our wonderful game!
I’m disappointed for Van Persie but not for the likes of Robben or Sneijder. Mixed feelings about Holland.
I think I watched a different game to most yesterday. Another game of this world cup undone by poor refereeing decisions and one thing that i agree on, too many individuals in the Holland lineup.
I am sick of the BBC punditry about Robbens ‘theatrics’ and not one mention of Iniesta diving repeatedly, once to get a player sent off, and other times when there was no contact. Puyol foul on Robben when through on goal anyone?
RVP got no service whatsoever, and when he did get forward he had no support.
Absolutely gutted for Holland, apart from ‘I’ll say what pleases the fans to avoid being booed for courting Barcelona if I have to stay at Arsenal’ Cesc, I can’t stand any of the Spanish team.
As for red cards..
De Jong,
Van Bommel,
Puyol,
Inesta.
They all should have gone, inesta for repeated diving, and the others for either red card or persistent yellow offences.
I don’t agree the best team won, I think the lucky team won. You can talk about other refereeing decisions, but when it really mattered the decisions were farcically in favour of Spain.
Not least for the foul on Elia, but the countless times the ball when out of play off a Spanish player and they won the decision.
I for one hope Howard Webb never referee’s an Arsenal game, and hope that FIFA can come out of the stone age and implement some form of technology to stop this rubbish.
One thing I will say is that even though Howard Webb is a pathetic excuse of a referee, he had a tough job out there today as both teams were cheating all over the place. I think Tom is pretty spot on when he says that the lucky team won. I guess I am a little bitter that the Arsenal player who deserves a bit of good luck has missed out on the World Cup. Spain losing in the final would have been a great result for Arsenal and the fact that Spain won is a disaster for us. Even as Fabregas received his medal he was being chatted up by the Barca players. Watch the replay and you’ll see.
On a brighter note, was anyone else impressed by Van der Wiel? He was a bit nervous at times in the first half but he is only 22… After that he defended great and closed down play well. We must remember that he was not given a licence to get forward for the Netherlands but it is nice to see he can also defend. Ramos was the player of the game had the game gone for 90 minutes. Does anyone else agree? If not who was your best player?
Van der Weil was certainly impressive in a solid defensive performance. But I’ve not seen him do much in attack in any game. Perhaps it’s just down to strategy. Have you seen him in the Dutch league?
I thought Iniesta was the player of the game because he was involved with most of the creative moments in the game
Refs have been very poor but, as you said, their job was not made any easier by the players and this is true for the whole tournament.
Thanks Phil23, that was the game as I saw it anyway, and I do agree its a hard job (I know its a personal preference thing, but making it easier with technology seems logical!)
I was very impressed with Van der Wiel, I thought he defended well, broke forwards with pace whe he could whilst never stopping tracking back and was completely out on his feet at the end. He was one who put in 200%, and I hope he continues developing. I would love to see him in an Arsenal shirt, along with Elia, who looks as if he could be a bit tricky.
NO! Spain was boring not entertaining. I was not entertained by them winning nearly all their matches by 1-0. Arsenal used to be called boring for that. Yes they do have talent but I think it was more of a midfielder’s game for them than attacking. In fact, without David Villa, they wou;d have gone out at the group stage – they were really that boring. They do not have the exciting penetrating football as displayed by Brazil, Argentina and Germany. Holland were actually a bit like the Spanish – not really interesting: they played 2 defensive midfielders, while the players behind them did not go forward as the Brazilians do, and their stand out players Snieder and Robben were so greedy they did not pass the ball to thier single striker. This was always going to be the recipe for a boring game. If F .

wow, it’s hard to believe the bitterness so many gunner fans feel at spain’s success… is it because they played mostly without your captain? or their starting line consists of mostly barcelona players? no doubt germany was a great team; but they were simply outclassed by a superior team. netherlands tactical approach was a huge disappointment for a nation that gave us total football; and spain deserved to win that one too. i wud’ve loved to see a bit less torres and more cesc and david silva tho…
