I don’t know what to feel right now. Should I be happy we are still in the tie? Was the late rally a sign of endurance and mental strength that will see us through tough times in the future? I am trying to be positive about this game but it’s tough.
The first half performance was depressing. The Arsenal players were scared of playing football and let Barcelona run all over them. Undeniably, the visitors had a brilliant start to the game but we were so impotent it made me sick.
I’ve talked about our defensive problems ad nauseam. Unlike the vast majority, I’ve always maintained we struggle because of a lack or organization and defensive awareness. It’s not an individual problem and will not go away by signing one or two players. I’ll delve into this again in the coming days but right now let me just focus on the events of the game.
In the first twenty minutes it was Almunia vs Barcelona and the much maligned keeper came out on top. We could easily have gone three down in that period and it would have crushed us mentally. This game could have been an embarrassment and even our premier league challenge could have suffered.
There were two simple problems. One, we gave them too much room to play. Two, we didn’t have any outlet to get out of our half.
Barcelona gave a masterclass in possession football. We really need to study the way they won the ball back. Every single player was alert at all times and their pressing was phenomenal. The Catalans were really good even by their lofty standards.
In contrast, Arsenal players always backed away at the wrong time and gave their midfield plenty of time on the ball. If this had been an exhibition match they could have played for ninety minutes without us getting a touch.
Our pressing had no cohesion. One player went to close down the man on the ball but no one closed down the simple options available to that man. On the other hand, Arsenal players hardly found a team-mate in space.
Even in the past I’ve said our players switch off too often especially when put under pressure in defence. Nobody wants to take charge and bring the ball out. If someone does try that, there’s hardly any off the ball movement that would allow the man on the ball to pick a pass. Inevitably, we end up hoofing it forward and it comes back in seconds.
Arshavin looked clueless in defence and hardly got a chance to attack. What’s the point of playing someone like him if he is going to spend the bulk of the time in the defensive third! We should have asked him to stay near the halfway line and used his pace to get out. Sadly, he didn’t last very long anyway and the arrival of Eboue did help us defensively.
Bendtner was too isolated but he should have worked the channels better. At least that would have given us some way of getting out of our half. This game did show that a big strong striker cannot hold the ball just because he is big and strong. Technique, co-ordination and awareness are far more important than physical attributes.
The injury to Gallas was a body blow. Playing Gallas was a poor gamble and shows it was a mistake to sign Campbell and no one else as a back up in that position.
As the first half came to an end I was feeling somewhat confident that we can turn this around. Arsene will say something, surely! All hopes were quashed within seconds of the restart. Once again, Pique was allowed too much time on the ball and no one picked the run of Ibrahimovic.
Too many people will pick on Almunia for coming out. Trust me it’s easy to say that in hindsight. When you are a keeper behind such a clueless defence, it’s an impossible decision to make. Vermalen and Song are amongst our best players but there was no communication between them at all. How can the Swede get acres of space in our box from such a simple punt over the top is beyond me. Really schoolboy stuff from our central defenders.
The second goal was almost a carbon copy. This time Almunia stayed back and Ibrahimovic still managed to score. That only shows how difficult the keeper’s life gets when the defenders sell him out so cheaply. If you give a guy with Ibrahimovic’s quality that amount of space in the box he will murder you no matter where the keeper is.
In spite of the two goals, the start to the second half was not as bad as the first. Barcelona didn’t push forward as much and we got a chance to put some passes together. This was evident from the 71% possession Barca had in the first half while they managed only 60% in second.
Two substitutions were forced and Arsene brought on Walcott with the last roll of the dice. The youngster’s speed had an immediate impact. Arsenal were pushing forward after conceding two and Walcott gave us a direct threat. Barcelona didn’t have a clue about dealing with him.
In the build up to the game I’d claimed that Barcelona have a poor defence and it was evident from the way they struggled once we pushed forward in numbers. We didn’t create too many clear chances but did enough to draw the game. If Cesc hadn’t picked up the injury we might actually have won this tie.
Victor Valdes had a big hand in our first goal when he let Theo’s shot go under him. I’ve always maintained the Barca keeper is a perfect example of a team winning championships with a dodgy keeper.
The second goal came from a freakish penalty. I’m not sure if it was a foul by Puyol. Somehow Fabregas’ leg got caught in between his but the camera angles didn’t cover it. You have to give Bendtner a lot of credit for that header which set Cesc free. The young Dane showed great control and awareness when most people would have directed a tame header towards goal.
The most important lesson from the final twenty minutes was that Barcelona can be pushed back and their weak defence can be exposed if Arsenal get their act right. Doing this at home is one thing and achieving it at the Camp Nou is a completely different ball game. We will see in a week’s time, won’t we!?
Individual Performances
Almunia: Brilliant. My man of the match. I don’t blame him for either of the goals we conceded even though he did make a mistake for the first one.
Sagna: Was poor in possession. Fought hard defensively. Needs to contribute more when going forward and when we need to keep the ball.
Gallas: Should never have started. Was caught out a few times with the movement of the Barca attackers.
Vermaelen: Fought hard, did a decent job on Messi and Ibrahimovic. Lack of communication and understanding with Song cost us two goals.
Clichy: Brilliant. Showed us exactly why we loved him so much in the 07-08 season. Sagna can learn from his tenacity.
Song: Was a little too physical when playing in midfield. Needed more support from Cesc and Diaby. Caught out for both the goals. Was too deep and away from the striker. He is not a centre back, at least not right now. It’s a shame that we have to play him there.
Cesc: Barca didn’t give him any space on the ball at all. Still did a good job, especially in the second half. Really worried about his injury.
Diaby: Easily the worst player on the night. His touch was poor, awareness nonexistent and passing woeful. Looked like he didn’t belong and I think it’s a mental problem because he is a much better player than what we saw on the pitch.
Arshavin: didn’t have an impact in attack. Hardly expect him to contribute in defence. Let’s hope the injury is not serious. We need better tactics to use his talents in such games.
Bendtner: Did well, especially in the second half, with limited chances. His touch was better than expected and got us out of tight spots in our own half. Should have scored when he headed it close to Valdes.
Nasri: Another one who can hold his head high. Worked his socks off and helped in attack and defence. Came close to scoring and set up some chances.
Subs: Eboue was efficient, Denilson was brilliant and showed the intelligence necessary to counter Barcelona’s passing, Walcott was effective and looked menacing at times.

First half almost give me heart attack – especially the first 20 minutes, but afterward I feel our boys could read the game better.
Second half starts from the 60th minute we start gunning them down, and show them what Arsenal is all about.
Overall it’s a great-great game, wish our boys could learn the experience from playing Barca.
For now I could shout: “This is the Emirates, and we are the Gunners. Visitors will be shot! survivors will be shot again!!!”
Cheers
Might be worthwhile checking when was the last time a team back from 2 goals down against Barca.
We’ve a lot to learn from Barca, will cover some of it tomorrow.
Might be worthwhile checking when a referee has last made such a terrible decision. It wasn’t a penalty and definitely no elimination. And the way you try to validate your pre-match predictions is hilarious. Barca’s defence is solid(at least compared to Arsenal’s), and the reason why they struggled is because the forward lines were pushed back and unable to keep the ball. Considering we were outnumbered, that one of the center defenders, of all people, was sent off and that Arsenal had a late spell of domination , the defence did a good job. And, as a suggestion, if I may, you should redo the player comparison. Only this time there should be at least three arrows pointing from Barcelona’s player to Arsenal’s.
Referee’s give such decision in every game. Barcelona won the Champions League last year because the ref saved them against Chelsea, you forget so easily! lol.
The only change I’ll make is Almunia >> Valdes. I was unfair to Almunia when I said both were similar.
You know I didn’t expect so many Barca fans here but it’s sad that for people who claim to support a team that plays such a beautiful game there aren’t many who actually understand what they are watching.
The fact that you have a football blog doesn’t mean you know anything about football. I was talking about a decision that artificially changed the face of a game and about absolute value. Apparently, you are more concerned with relative value. So, if the ref would have unjustly sent off 3 barca players and Arsenal would have dominated you would have been so proud “lol”. The arrows don’t go away simply because you wish them away. And, btw, I am here because someone on a barcelona forum gave a link to your ludacris comparisons.
If you check the facts, Arsenal dominated the last 30 minutes and Puyol was sent off in the last five minutes. Don’t hide behind a referee decision. Arsenal scored the first goal when there was no numerical advantage and would have scored the second even if Puyol was on the pitch.
Anyway this is my last response to you because frankly it’s just a waste of my time.
Right, right, and right. My sentiments exactly. Bendtner let Pique stand on the ball for a good 6 seconds before closing in on him and by then Pique had picked out Zlatan for the first goal.
At least Campbell and Vermaelen seem to have a good understanding, and like you said Song looked out of place at CB (in this game). Whoever Wenger decides to start at RCB (please Campbell) I hope he gives the pair some practice in the game against Wolves on Saturday.
By the way I can smell the anti-Wenger rant coming from you, so I’m nipping it in the butt. In Arsene We Trust.
I don’t know if you’ve read this blog regularly or not, but I am one of the most pro-wenger bloggers you will get. Rest assured you won’t get an anti-wenger rant from me
What you will get are genuine and honest attempts at analyzing the game and I don’t try to sugar coat our weaknesses, as I see them. In case you’re new here just check this article to get an idea of what i mean

Its really ironic that we kept a clean sheet in the first half but conceded 2 goals in the 2nd half when we played far better than in the 1st half. The first goal seemed like almunia was at fault, but considering he saved 3 certain goals, I’m sure even the harshest critic can forgive him. Also, he stayed on his line for a similar situation for the 2nd goal and look what ibra did. What I will say about the goals is that the defence was caught out way too easily for what was 2 crude lobs over the backline. No arguments about the finishes though.
I hope this performance stuffs it in the face of all the denilson haters. I readily admit that he has not been in the best of form recently, but some of the things said about him recently, well, the less said the better.
Agree with all your ratings.
One thing people don’t notice about Almunia is that his saves were extremely intelligent saves. He read the danger well and kept his eye on the ball till the last minute.
Not like Valdes who threw himself in front of Bendtner but didn’t know where the ball was.
That’s why I’ve always said, Almunia has the best technique for a one v one.
Dare I say, Denilson almost looked as good as the Barca midfield.
I totally agree desi, denilson would fit straight into their team, and even league. Its not to say denilson will not be able to make it in this league, he’s been playing so long that people forget he only turned 22 last month. He just needs time and he will come good. Its ridiculous how people expect every youngster to perform like Cesc or Messi do.
btw, I forgot to applaud the fight shown by the players today. If only we play every minute of the game like we play the last 15-20 minutes. We were woeful in the first half. We started poorly and it went further downhill from there. I was expecting ( hoping rather ) a turnaround in the 2nd half, but zlatan chose to finally turn it on. All in all, great fightback and hopefully, the way the game ended should give the players confidence to play like they can in Barcelona
agree with all your ratings..hopefully we can play better at the nou camp next week..couldn’t be much happier to see puyol and pique are ineligible for the next tie..they will much weaker in the central defence pairing with left milito, chgrynsky and yaya toure to play on CB..the good point for last night was we can keep messi silent for whole game before he substituted
I was just thinking about that. Except for the initial few minutes, Messi was shackled. Although I do feel that because we were tight on him, it created space for the others.
Completely agree with the article. We gave them way too much room. Nobody once pressured Xavi, nobody once got in his face and nobody once even marked him. His positioning is not complicated either. He desnt run around too much when he doesnt have the ball.
Barcelona are great, but we allowed them to play great too.
We enjoyed a bit of possession towards the end, but this was only because Barcelona allowed US to play a bit, being 2-0 up. This is the difference. We allowed them to play for the entire game.
Oh man!.
We really really need to do something about our defending.Where was the pressing, and putting your foot in??!!.Barca were toying with us!.
I do agree Almunia shouldnt get the blame for either goals conceded.
Fab could miss the rest of the season!.Very worrying signs as already there’s speculation in tabloids as he said
“I am not good. We have to wait but I hope I will be able to wear the Arsenal shirt again this season.”
is being quoted as the last time he may appear for Arsenal.I really pity the media!.
Anyways Fab would’ve missed the 2nd leg even if he hadn’t been booked due to his injury!.But he took down Barca’s 2 central defensive stalwarts with him(getting them booked) and just how crucial a difference this will make we will see when we square off at the Camp Nou.
Great comeback by the lads. It was a massive game, and we looked a little rattled with how Barca started keeping the ball. They were playing as a team both with and without the ball. First half was heart aching. They closed us down quickly while we were unable to do so with us being outnumbered in small triangles of play. We couldn’t alter the games pace at any moment in the first half and thats where we got pinned back time and again after we lost the ball. But its all about momentum, and belief, and i feel we have the latter now going into the 2nd leg. I’d take the 2-2 scoreline anyday after being 0-2 down by the 60th min, and especially when we’re not playing good. Almunia, Clichy, Nasri and Denilson had amazing games. So did Vermaelen except for 2 simple ‘holding the line’ mistakes. All the denilson bashers, where are you now and wtf do you know about football when the kid tried to string the midfield tirelessly even when the whole team was non-functional, against the champions? Time for some humble pie?
denilson is more a technical player not suited for power play in england, what’s their to read in lofting the ball and scoring. One game doesn’t change it. He can’t run, can’t hold physically, surely he can’t be in team for simply reading the game…
All said, he will be THE most important player at camp nou for arsenal.
A few points,
1. I believe the reason Messi didn’t contribute as expected was because of Vermaelen, he stayed close to Messi from what I have seen from replays, but will have to watch the game again to be sure. Clichy was mainly defending Pedro(I think) and Messi normally drift in to where Vermaelen is, so apart from the first few minutes where he has to learn first hand what Messi did, Messi didn’t appear at all after that.
2. As I have said before, Barca’s fitness level tend to degrade towards the end of the 2nd half(although I have only noticed this in their Struttgart) (and against Zaragoza where they they in 2 goals at the end). This could of course be because they switched off as they are in front, but you can notice that they do not press the ball as often. Given their high intensity pressing in the 1st half, I’ll have to say it’s their fitness level.
3. Denilson played superbly against a technical side. Has anyone else thought that the reason Wenger likes him so much is because in training he plays well(against his team mates who are also technical) while in league matches he suffers against physical teams. It is interesting because we can finally see what Wenger sees in Denilson everyday in training.
Just the 3 points, I don’t comment often and have been known to be completely wrong before
denilson is suited for this type of game, no physical but intercepting intelligently…..
fab is out for the season,
so is gallas,
it will be miracle if we win anything….
wenger shudn’t have risked fabregase and gallas as their is still a chance for pl
I think two cd not playing for barcelona won’t be a problem as they defend from strikers, midfielders and every other player.
I think season is truly over now for us, but i already thought that 2 times this season!!
@critic – i wont talk much with you relating to football in definitive terms as you’ve showed time and again what you know. Everyone knows denilson is not physically equipped yet though he was our most regular starter and gained much experience last term. But why? Because he hasnt had a run in the team for a while, lots of niggling injuries(if you know about medical sport, that alters your bulking process a lot, especially when young, due to attachment of muscles with the joints and shafts of bones). He’ll come good next year, as he showed last year.
Hi DesiGUnner
It was a nice game to watch. Some of the stuff Barca came out with in the first 20 minutes were a treat to the eye. The way they pressed so high up the pitch when they did not have the ball was great and has been the cornerstone of a good defensive record for Barca
Almunia has great technique for one on ones and is a decent keeper prone to the odd mistake. With the kind of switching off Arsenal defense is capable of you need a keeper with better organizational capabilities and concentration or a better defense
Denilson was really good and showed composure and intelligence
Nasri was quite a handful and he put in lot of dangerous balls into the box and made some good runs
Clichy rose to the occasion and had a good game
Barca are favorites to go through but with Pique and Puyol missing there is a sniff of a chance. But Iniesta could return and then the midfield possession will be greater from Barca
However Arsenals squad, confidence and composure are still a little short of Wengers vision and philosophy.
It will be interesting to see if the human emotions come in the way of achieving Wengers vision
Fellows!
With the game being played a such a tempo it’s impossible for the keeper to organize the defence. I’ve highlighted the need for better defensive coaching and training in previous posts.
Even I agree that Barca are favorites, they always were.
Wenger’s on the cusp but the squad might need one or two additions simply due to the number of injuries we suffer.
