Harry Redknapp thinks he is a very good manager and is capable of being in the top four if not better. His comments before the game and after the game are clear evidence that he has a high opinion of himself and found a humbling defeat hard to take. The following quote from his post match interview is just an example
We committed suicide really and it cost us. It was Sunday-morning stuff. You see that play on the park. All three goals were scandalous.
There is no gap between the clubs in my opinion, I think two mistakes turned the game upside down. We’ve got 19 points and we’ll still be right up there at the end of the season.
Even before the game he had talked about the weaknesses that Arsenal have and how Crouch could be unplayable.
Anyone struggles against Crouch, nobody can handle him if the service is good
Arsene had his own way of having a dig at all the comments from the Spuds
In our job it is about performances not about opinions, and so I believe the most important is what you do on the football pitch.
Ultimately, Redknapp lost face when the performance on the pitch couldn’t match all their talk. I don’t like listening to pundits but one of them got it right when he said, “Tottenham talk the talk, but Arsenal walk the walk.”
I am not denying that the Spuds boss is a good manager. In fact, that is exactly what proves how great Arsene is. Interestingly, there were some other statements from Redknapp that just showed the gap between the two managers.
He tried to prove that Arsene has no role in finding and developing young players.
He has a great scouting system, it’s about recruitment. No disrespect to Arsene, it’s not him finding the kids — no more than it is me finding the kids here. Someone is finding them and bringing them into the club. Arsene isn’t standing on Hackney Marshes on a Sunday watching kids play football.
I guess no one ever told the tots’ boss that it is the manager’s responsibility to develop a scouting system. Firstly, the man in charge would have to have enough understanding of the game to identify quality young players. Secondly, he would have to recruit the scouts who could understand his philosophy and do a proper job. Thirdly, he would still have to look at countless tapes and keep tabs on scores of players in order to unearth one or two gems.
These might be difficult notions for a man who cannot see beyond the likes of Defoe and Palacios. It is men like Redknapp who inflate the market. They have no scouting network and no real ability to spot the talent of a relative unknown. Obviously, when their knowledge is limited their market would also be limited. Simple supply and demand economics would then inflate the market in which they operate. Most of the managers fall in this category.
To put this into perspective, the best mid field player at Spuds was first discovered by Arsene and he is not good enough to get into the Arsenal team. The tots paid ₤12 million for that player. Wenger could have signed him for a fraction of that.
Another important aspect to consider here is the extra effort that anyone would have to put in to create and manage such a network. It is obvious that Redknapp does not have such a system. The result also showed his tactical inadequacy. Can you imagine how much harder Arsene must be working when compared to a well respected guy like Harry?
The Spuds’ boss also made the following comment about Vermaelen
Vermaelen has done very well. I was recommended him as a left-back but we were strong in that position. People who recommended him didn’t speak of him as a central defender.
Compare this with the story about Arsenal tracking Vermaelen even after the scout saw Ajax, with TV5 at left back, concede ten goals in two games! Doesn’t it clearly show the difference between the people Redknapp works with and those Arsene works with?
What prevents Harry from finding the right people? I would say it is his limited knowledge and ability that prevents him. Shouldn’t a manager have enough sense to know whether a player can play center back or not? He does himself no favors by passing the buck on to people who recommended the Belgian. You can easily imagine the limited choices available to such a manager.
Arsene is perhaps the most hardworking manager in the league. He is also the most visionary. There’s only one Arsene Wenger. I think Harry Redknapp has just helped us establish that. What do you think?

Good article, arsene is intelligent than harry.yesterday, arsenal were leading 3-0,u know what, wenger was up communicating to the players while harry was sitted saying nothing just moaning, and what was scandalous is when arsenal concided late goals when it ended 4-4 last season.

Thanks BD. Yeah Harry came with only one plan and when that flopped all he could do was sit and moan.

Good shout, agree 100%.
I find it very annoying that the pundits refuse to acknowledge the fact that Harry has spent so recklessly at every club that he has given them long standing fundamental problems. We do not run a model in England that continental sides do, where they have a sporting director and a head coach. At West Ham, Southampton and Portsmouth he was entrusted with the both the immediate and long term future of the club. You only have to look at the current plight to see what he caused.
Sky TV will never acknowledge this as his son works there, BBC won’t as Gary Lineker is ex Spurs, plus he has this reputation as been a happy go lucky wide boy which the tabloids seem to embrace.
I don’t see what he has done for young English talent, agreed West Ham had a great youth squard with Ferdinand, Cole etc, but has he only bought Enlgish players? No, that loony Dutch bloke who lived in a caravan is one example of inflating fees for average players then booting them out for nothing.
He has been instrumental in the increasing fans view that clubs have to spend big to be successful, that’s wrong, we are losing sight of what is important. If every club is as reckless as he has been, we are in big trouble.
This has nothing to do with him been a Tottenham managaer, i don’t want them to go bust, who else would I laugh at?
When will the so called experts acknowledge we are trying to create a new sustainable business model for English football clubs? Yes we need to concede less, but let Arsene work on it at the training ground, he does not need to go and spend big. Let’s work with what we have, and improve the squad with hard work and the players dedication in improving themselves.
And could Harry not have been gracious and acknowledged they were not at the races – they had one shot, a free kick from a player raised at Arsenal, who should have been sent off after 8 minutes.
The futures bright, the futures Arsenal.
kepp up the good work desi

Thanks MartinC. You have written a good piece.
I think people in charge at Portsmouth should be punished for bringing the club on the brink of collapse. That would be the only way to make sure others don’t try the same stunts and even more importantly, the same people don’t get a chance to repeat them elsewhere.
Most people, especially in the media, never realize the true extent of the work being done by Arsene. Future generations will acknowledge his genius in a more appropriate way.

How can he say all three goals were scandelous? Fab from the halfway line is undoubtedly the best goal I’ve seen so far season. It wasn’t just a 30 yard screamer where 49 out of 50 end up closer to the corner flag, one always goes in eventually if you try often enough.
He was obviously embarrassed after all the mouthing off him and Keane did prior to the match. He was so confused that he started contradicting himself. On the one hand he’s trying to deflect crticism from his teams performance by highlighting the bad treatment he got from some Arsenal fans and, they would still be there come the end of the season because today was just a bad day at the office. He then sticks the knife into his team by saying they played like a bunch of kids on a Sunday morning.
Wenger or Fergie would have probably told them that in the dressing room but not berate them in public.
Had Wenger come out with the same wingeing statements after a defeat the media would have crucified him.
Excellent read btw.
Arsene knows Arry doesn’t.

Thanks. Even I was quite pissed to hear him blame the defence for the fab goal. You are right. He lost the plot and his composure.

Best article Arsenal I’ve read for a long time – incisive, well-thought through, not disparaging, balanced with some hard-hitting evidence – excellent

Thanks a lot Paul.

Harry blaming everyone else ….again.
This twat is the most overrated manager in the league. Who else would humiliate one of his own in front of millions (Darren Bent) and use infantile analysis when his teams get mullered – you’d have thought he’d have had enough practice in post-match post mortems for christs sake!
Peter Crouch ‘unplayable’!!
By far the most self-congratulating deluded fool in the game.

Great article. Did anyone watch the post match interview when he snapped at the interviewer? What a sore loser! The guy just asked him if they were going through a blip and redknapp starts mocking him saying that spurs are gonna get relegated.

Thanks Nischit.
Yeah I saw that
In fact, that was the time when I started putting together everything he had said as he was making a fool of himself.

Spot on.. excellent article desi..
Good to realise the work of our manager once in a while.. Arsene is a perfect example of What a Manager is. people like harry can never be at that level..
There isnt any one club manager who is better than Wenger, in terms of how to run a club successfully as a whole. (not just man mangement)
What makes me to wonder is that.. Arsene has been working like this ever since he took charge as if he knew this how it going to be after 13 years when he took charge..
For anyone else 24 hours a day is not enough for the kind of work he is doing…
Harry….. what a loser! Cant just take a defeat. Goes blaming everyone else for the defeat when his toothless tactic was the sole reason.. No plan B.. makes me laugh..
November 2, 2009 at 6:29 am |
I agree with you. There is no other manager in the league who can equal Wenger. I think he genuinely believes in what he does and loves it every moment. Otherwise it would be impossible to work so hard.
November 2, 2009 at 3:47 am |
Great stuff again, brilliant article. I think since Harry is considered the best english manager, the media never really criticize him. In my opinion Roy Hodgson is a much better manager than him.
Great post by Martin C as well. Really wonderful blog.
November 2, 2009 at 6:32 am |
I think Hodgson and Wenger are on very good terms. It’s surprising Hodgson wasn’t at a bigger club and sooner.

Anup, I will keep your point in mind. I think it helps me build a relationship with regular visitors when I reply to their thoughts. It also seems like courtesy to welcome and thank the new guys.
I can understand it can be irritating for a reader though to see thanks after each comment.

yes redknapp is a saggy faced cunt who should be no where near london’s best supported club but he’s still better than a bunch of overseas armchair pundits on this site!
Lets be honest buying a replica shirt doesn’t make you mongs supporters.
